Basswood at Cotton Lake--A Wonderful Vacation Destination
Basswood Lodge at Cotton Lake—A Wonderful Birding Destination Perched upon a breezy bluff with a birds-eye view across sparkling Cotton Lake Basswood Lodge is a perfect getaway for the birder, nature lover, or for anyone who might enjoy a few days of tranquility and a place to reconnect with oneself and the natural world. Basswood Lodge is actually nothing more than a traditional Minnesota lake cabin, one of thousands sprinkled around the land of 10,000 lakes; this one as quaint and cozy as you might remember a lake cabin of days gone by. She’s tucked within the hillside to blend harmoniously with oak, maple, birch and of course basswood trees—a forest that provides shelter from the west wind and gracefully frames the lake view. If you enjoy birds and bird watching you will never tire of Basswood’s lake-side deck, eye-level with the forest canopy. Take your morning coffee outdoors, warmed by the morning sun, surrounded by beautiful nature. In fact, after a morning or two like this you may find yourself completely at home. On the inside, Basswood is spare but complete and finely finished with lovely Douglas fir flooring; warm, reclaimed wood paneling and clear pine windows and doors. Offsetting the subdued tones of abundant wood features, paint colors such as “Morning Light” and “Crystalline” lend brightness to the ceilings and certain walls. Our main level consists of the kitchen, living room and dining area, and the adjacent master bedroom and bathroom. On warm nights it is pleasant to sleep with the French doors open to the screen porch, and wake to loons calling and the conversations of morning birds. A ship’s ladder leads guests to the loft which we’ve furnished with one full size bed, one twin bed and ample seating. The loft is a nice place to read on a stormy day. A feature window captures eagle-eye views across Cotton Lake to forested Shelley Island. Guests who take the loft accomodations will enjoy their own full bath as well. There is a pleasant footpath down to our sand and gravel beach and the clean swimming water of Cotton Lake. Bass fishing is good right from shore, and better from the end of our 32’ dock. Bring your own boat for the best Cotton Lake has to offer. Public access is easy at the state access straight across from our cabin. Best of all the Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge south boundary is one mile up the county road. The refuge offers some of the best birding in Minnesota and is wonderful for day hikes, road bikes and captivating scenery. It is a slice of Minnesota the way it used to be, complete with virtually all the wildlife and tree species we were blessed with, including two rare species—trumpeter swan and gray wolf. Our family looks forward to enjoying the beauty and tranquility of Cotton Lake for years to come. We would love to share our delightful lake cabin with like-minded and appreciative guests.
As a word of caution, Basswood Lodge is situated on a bluff overlooking Cotton Lake. The lake path is not long but just a little steep. The walkway to the cabin’s main level is also upward, along a stone pathway, and a short stair step. In other words, the cabin may not be entirely suitable for the elderly, infirm or disabled guests. On the other hand, Basswood Lodge is entirely suitable for children and adults in reasonably good shape. And as a side benefit, the hike to and from the lake will get your heart warmed up and pumping, so when you have to leave for home, you’ll go in better shape than when you arrived.

Thank you Amy for your nice thoughts about our Basswood Lodge. We hope you got out on the lake a bit, that it wasn't too busy and hope you added a few birds to your life-list. We will be heading back soon to spend a few weeks in June. Praying for some rain and fresh skies. Please come again when you need a serene vacation.

We absolutely loved staying at Basswood! It was the perfect size, cozy, and had everything you need and more. We loved being right on the water, relaxing by the fire, and playing games in the cabin. Communicating with Leo was easy and he was so patient when I asked numerous questions. It was truly a treat to stay at Basswood, we hope to be back!

Thank you Laurie for vacationing at our cabin again--your third or fourth time and always on the 4th of July. In fact, you were just about our first guests those few years ago. And your heroic efforts at controlling a storm water flood that first year will never be forgotten. We hope you and Bob will continue to keep Basswood Lodge on your vacationing agenda. You might even enjoy a mid-July week as much as the 4th. Sincerely, Leo Keane
We tremendously enjoyed our stay at Basswood lodge, we found the cabin to be exactly like what was stated in the listing amenities. The view of the lake and the shoreline access from the dock was very pleasant, we enjoyed the back deck listening to the serenading of the loons to our morning coffee.

This was our 2nd trip to this beautiful cabin. Once again, we enjoyed sitting by the lake, swimming, and the beautiful sunsets. Coffee on the deck in the mornings.....a must! The addition of the water conditioner made a big difference. It was hard to leave.....but we shall return!

What a joy! We needed calm & beauty and we found it at Basswood Lodge! The cabin is lovely & comforting. Leo & the Basswood Lodge team’s professionalism in maintaining the cabin helped us feel comfortable staying during this pandemic. Frankly, we didn’t want to leave. Absolutely loved our experience!!
Lovely cabin, well equipped. Not the best place to fish or swim. The steep incline to and from the lake make this more of a getaway place than a lake side vacation spot, but then I'm an old *art.
Basswood Lodge was the perfect spot for a short break from the day to day bustle. Our first real getaway since before the pandemic. The cabin is beautiful and well cared for. I was concerned about the path to the lake after reading others' comments, but it was not nearly as daunting as I feared.
Leo was very communicative, and check in/out was easy. We would definitely return!

Thank you Kevin for your nice review of our Basswood Lodge. We are pleased to hear the cabin was all that you'd hoped for and a perfect getaway on Cotton Lake. It sounds like you needed that. You and your family are welcome to come again. Maybe another time the hike down to lakefront will seem even easier. Maybe steps?

Stunning setting and views of Cotton Lake perfect! Welcoming cabin built with love.
Great cabin perched high at tree top level with spectacular views of the lake. Loft is special place to read or nap. Spent many hours playing cards on screened porch. Hike to lake worth the steps as water clear and welcoming. Best location for sunsets on the dock. Look forward to claw foot tub being in working order next year. No WiFi or TV was a welcome change to play, hike, canoe, fish or swim. We will be back 😀

Thank you Nancy. We'd love to have you return for a vacation next year or whenever you can get back "up north." And yes, the claw-foot tub has been repaired for your enjoyment next time.

We had a great time, was a beautiful spot for our family of 3. With a toddler, the steps, lots of places to fall, and steep grade down to the lake was tricky for the first few days, then she got the hang of it and we relaxed too. Will definitely be back when she’s a bit older! Leo was super friendly and great to communicate with, it is an absolutely gorgeous crystal clear lake, I caught a large mouth bass off the dock. Beach is rocks, not sand, but you can use the canoe that’s with the cabin to paddle over to the sandy beaches of the nature preserve. We saw many bald eagles, loons, blue heron and caught lots of fish! You’ll love it.

Thank you Katie for your nice review of Basswood Lodge. We're glad your toddler got the hang of navigating our rustic landscape. It might be a lesson that will serve her well. It's also encouraging that you caught fish right of the dock, given the receding water level and warm temperatures. Please come again when we return to a more normal Minnesota summer. We say that with a great deal of hope that this summer will go down as an anomaly weather-wise. We would love to see the lake closer to the shore. Leo Keane
My little family of 4 stayed there while we were in town for a family gathering. We love staying in places out of town and out of hotels. This little cabin was perfect. It was a little warm the first night without AC but we utilized the fans and luckily the rest of the time it was much cooler. We didn't get to use the lake area much but it was beautiful and quiet. I would say you just need a couple more standing oscillating fans for the couple of days that it stays above 70 at night and your golden! The manager Joe was close by in case we needed anything. I loved having hot tea on the beautiful balcony. Thank you for having this cabin available in an area where there are so few it made our week!

Loved it!
We really enjoyed our time at Basswood Lodge. The cabin is so beautifully crafted with unique woods and interesting furnishings. We loved sitting in the screened porch or on the deck, enjoying the view of the lake and listening to the birds…..it was a very private setting. When it was chilly, we turned on the fireplace. We took chairs to the dock several times, soaking in the beauty of Cotton Lake. Oh…..and the sunsets were spectacular! The only drawback was the cabin water smelling like sulfur. The owner (Leo, who was very nice to work with) told us about that and is looking for a solution. We brought our own drinking water. Even with that, the relaxation and beauty we experienced will bring us back there again next year!

Thank you Laurie and Bob for this very nice review. You were admirably easy going and flexible given the situations (tornado warnings and intense thunderstorm).
Laurie and Bob were our first VRBO guests for our first season as Vacation Rental Owners with VRBO. We could not have picked a better couple to "break in" our cabin. They were very polite, helpful and communicative throughout the tornado threat, and good sports about it too. We appreciate too that Laurie and Bob seemed to really enjoy Cotton Lake and the tranquility of our nice location. We sincerely look forward to Laurie and Bob vacationing at our cabin again, we hope next summer.
With regard to the sulfur smell from our well water I am pleased to report that we have Culligan of Detroit Lakes taking a water sample and recommending for us a water conditioning system that will remedy both the odor and the mineral content of our water.
We love the location on Cotton Lake where we love using our kayaks and inner tubes. Good walking trails and hike to and from lake is a good cardio hike. Watched the baby bird grow but unfortunately she fell out of nest but somehow in the night she flew away. Leo has a good book & game collection of which we added 2 books. Screened in porch perfect placed to play cards and other games. So helpful to have washer & dryer. New fan help on during hot days. Friends & family nearby. Delightful to observe eagles. Leo is always available if an issue arises which didn’t happen this year. Our favorite places to vacation on Cotton Lake. Thank you Leo!

Nancy and Curtis. Thanks so much for your thoughtful review of Basswood Lodge. More importantly we are glad you enjoyed your vacation so much and appreciate Cotton Lake and our natural surroundings. The hike to and from the lake is certainly good cardio, nevertheless, I will continue to work on an easier pathway, including steps and switchbacks. It might be slower, but more pleasant. We look forward to your return next summer!

We'll be back!
We really had a wonderful time at Basswood Lodge. Our children and grandchild were able to join us for a couple days and it was a great family getaway.
Starting with the location, it's very convenient and easy to find. We were welcomed by John, who quickly showed us the property and answered any questions we had. Within an hour we were unpacked and it felt like "our place" right away. The pictures on the website are nice, but it actually looks better in person. Solidly built, a beautiful lake home. The views are fantastic, especially from the deck and the loft.
As the website says, it's a bit of a walk up and down the hill to the lake - a good cardio boost for this 55 year old grandpa. I walk daily, and it didn't bother me at all. We rented a boat that sat nicely next to the sturdy dock all week. We enjoyed fishing from the dock and swimming right there every day.
The cabin is well furnished with everything you'd need. All the appliances and grill worked great.
It's very clean. It is Minnesota lakes country - so there are bugs to deal with. All part of the experience.
We liked not having a TV in the property. We watched a couple Netflix shows on our computer before turning in for the night.
We were concerned about no air conditioning, but we had a pleasant week with high temperatures in the 80's and lows at night in the 60's.
We opened the windows and slept very well. It got a bit warm during the day, but we had very little time inside while we were there.
The fire pits were a great place to finish off each day while we were there. Don't worry - there's plenty of firewood handy.
All in all, a great destination. I've rented homes for several years for vacations and Basswood stacks up with the best of them. Leo is a great owner, he's genuinely thinking of you and your stay. I felt if we needed anything, Leo and John would take care of it right away. I would highly recommend Basswood to anyone looking for a quiet Minnesota-nice vacation.

Thank you Jim for your nice review of Basswood Lodge. We are very pleased that our cabin met your expectations for a relaxing vacation.
Jim and company were great to have as guests because we sensed they were having a good time at the lake. Jim sent us several photos of the family on the water catching nice bass and pike. Our property manager (Joe, not John) reported the cabin and the property were left clean and in good shape. As absentee owners this is of great importance to us. It is nice to have our guests appreciate the cabin and Cotton Lake for many of the same reasons we do. We welcome Jim and the family back at Cotton Lake anytime.
And by the way, we will have those important shades and blinds installed on the windows by next summer.
This lovely cabin more than met our needs. was well appointed and the property manager was very responsive. Unfortunately weather was not cooperative for using the canoe but it looked inviting. Several beautiful sunrises from the dock. We loved hearing the loons on the lake... not so much the neighbor's barking dog which was chained outside. I realize this is out of the control of the property owner and note it was the only downside that we experienced. Our stay was cut short due to personal circumstances but we enjoyed the time we were there. A family would surely appreciate the luxury of 2 bathrooms, washer / dryer and the WiFi.
Very well appointed cabin, cozy, lovely place to celebrate our 50th anniversary!

Thank you John for your kind review. Our cleaning contractors reviewed you as well, saying the cabin was left so clean, vacuumed, reorganized that all they had to do was wipe it down. I'm sure that half true, but we surely appreciate guests who take care and responsibility for leaving the cabin in as good a condition as it was found. You and your friends are welcome to return to Basswood Lodge anytime. We are glad our place met your expectations. Leo Keane
We, the owners of Basswood Lodge, are Leo, a Custom Home Builder, Gail, a School Teacher and our daughter Linnaea, an Interior Designer. Basswood Lodge has been a refuge of peacefulness and re-connection with nature each time we go to Cotton Lake.
Why they chose this property
For me, Leo, the Custom Builder and Dreamer, I'd have to say, this property chose me. Being a builder my goal was to find a lake country property where I could build our own cabin. On a dreary, first day of autumn drive in 2002 I came upon a "for sale" sign nailed to a tree on South Cotton Lake Road. When I stepped out to take a look around, walked up to the bluff where the lake view opened before me I sensed I'd found the right place. The property had all the natural ingredients for a lake cabin, and the lake too, with clean, clear water and unspoiled vistas sealed the deal.
What makes this property unique
Our cabin is only 10 miles from Detroit Lakes, but if feels like a world of it's own. The north facing, lake side deck encompasses a stunning view across beautiful Cotton Lake to Shelley Island--a state owned Wildlife Management Area. Further across Cotton Lake is the southern boundary of the federally owned Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge. Both of these are, of course, public lands open to all outdoor recreation.
