You can explore the Dorset countryside at Moors Valley Country Park, which makes for a wonderful family day out. The country estate and mansion at Kingston Lacey, which dates to the mid-1600s, are open for visitors to tour. On the outskirts of Poole, Upton Country Park is about 6 miles away.
