About this property
VILLA CASTRO - c.15th century TRADITIONAL AEGEAN HOUSE in Koskinou / Rhodes
– Villa Castro is situated within a (by now ruined) medieval castle that was built during the 15th century by the Knights Hospitaller in order to fortify the traditional village of Koskinou.
– Villa Castro is located at the dead end of a pedestrian alley used only by the very few nearby residents. Hence, the villa is in a very quiet neighborhood offering a perfect place for relaxation.
The space
15th Century, stone-built renovated traditional village house.
Immediate surroundings
– Villa Castro is situated within a (by now ruined) medieval castle that was built during the 15th century by the Knights Hospitaller in order to fortify the traditional village of Koskinou. At the very top of the stone-built gate that is located exactly next to the main entrance of Villa Castro one can still see an engraved "1402" which is the year that the gate was actually erected.
– Along the narrow alleys of the villa's neighborhood are colorful houses featuring traditional facets which are very popular subjects of photography. Without doubt though, the most rewarding experience while walking around Koskinou village is meeting the villagers themselves who always seem to have the time to welcome visitors for a chat or for a cup of greek coffee, while they are eager to answer questions about anything. These are people that do not occupy themselves with new technologies and social media and are not interested in how branded one looks or how much one's car at home might be worth. These are people that live to live and are proud to share their philosophy with the visitors.
Amenities
Within 2-3 minutes walking distance from the villa you can find:
6 local eating places (Yannis Taverna, Tasos Taverna, Mandala, Karavelladika, Afthendikon souvlaki, Kotsakis souvlaki - all favorites in their own right), 1 coffee/pastry and take away home-cooked food place located in the main square of the village (Gefsi kai Paradosi) of Koskinou), 2 mini markets (with daily fresh vegetable/fruits and baked bread), a butcher (offering an excellent quality of local produce), and a traditional tailor.
Several big supermarkets are located within 5-10 minutes drive from Koskinou village.
Description of Villa Castro (sleeps 4 + 1 persons)
The western wall of the main sala (living room) of the villa is actually the inner side of the wall of the (by now ruined) medieval fort that used to protect the village of Koskinou. In Greek “Castro” means “Castle”, hence the name of the villa.
This naturally imposing wall seems to have the ability to compel guests to enter a stage of relaxation. The villa's courtyard is another definite favorite place for unwinding while getting engaged in either private or communal activities.
The villa features antique furniture and handcrafted wooden structures. The traditional lime painting methods applied throughout the villa have created a healthy environment.
Main sala: Spacious 38m² / 410ft² living room, supported by a stoned arch 5 meter (16.5 ft.) high. It features a sitting area (which includes a 220cm (87 inch) long wooden handcrafted couch which can accommodate one sleeper), a dining area, while its exceptionally high ceiling gives room for two traditional wooden carved "pataros" (high level handcrafted sleeping places) each one of which accommodates two sleepers and is separated with the rest of the sala by curtains for privacy. Two simple ceiling cupolas allow for daylight to comfortably enter the sala.
Courtyard: (about 15m² / 160ft²) Cozy and private open space for relaxing or dining, shaded by a wild fig tree and a mulberry tree.
Terrace: (about 9m² / 96ft²) Accessed from the sala via a wooden staircase, it is popular for pre-noon sunbathing.
Bedroom 1&2: Two traditional wooden carved "pataros" (handcrafted sleeping platforms) accessed by purpose-built wooden staircases are located across each other within the main sala . Each one of those pataros accommodates two sleepers and is separated with the rest of the sala by curtains for privacy.
THERE IS ACTUALLY ONLY ONE BEDROOM which is the main sala of the villa, the room where traditionally the sleeping places ("pataros") were constructed.
Kitchen: Fully equipped + clothes' washing machine.
Bathroom: Bathtub, basin, shower, WC. Hot water.
Internet: Cable & Wi-Fi. Password given on the 1st encounter with the guests.
TV: Flat screen TV.
Air Condition: Available.
Heating in winter: Electric heater.
Parking: Free street parking in the village square.
