Why they chose this property
There has been a settlement in Coldingham since around 640AD, when Saint Æbba founded a monastery here, housing both monks and nuns. Their behaviour apparently became so rowdy that St Cuthbert, the patron saint of Northumbria, was dispatched to restore some order. It is said that every evening he would walk down to Coldingham Sands and out into the sea until he was neck deep to bathe, staying in the water until dawn to avoid succumbing to the temptations of the flesh.
A curious monk decided to follow him to the beach one evening and watched as Cuthbert sang psalms from the sea. When Cuthbert finally came back to shore, the story goes that he was followed by two otters; they warmed his ice-cold feet and dried him with their fur.
We have been coming here for several years and fell in love with the area’s rich history and wild coastline. We hope that you enjoy your time in this hidden jewel of the Berwickshire coast. Who knows, you may get your feet dried by sea-otters too!
What makes this property unique
It is a long way from the glitz and glamour of Miami's golden beaches to the rugged beauty of the Scottish Borders. Even so, we have sought to bring something of The Magic City to the Berwickshire Coast.
The property itself is pure Art Deco - an angular white cube that rears unexpectedly out of the surrounding fields above the beach below. The gate opens to reveal a large garden to the left and to the right a deck, safe for dogs and children to play in and perfect for late lunches and early evening cocktails as the sun sets.
Inside, the Miami beach house vibe continues, with striking artwork and contemporary photography combining with faded wooden furniture, stone fabrics and the odd splash of sunshine. Huge floor to ceiling sliding windows dominate every room, providing a glorious view out onto the sea beyond and, when fully open, bringing the outside in such that it all blends together. Each double bedroom is luxuriously fitted out and has its own bathroom, one en-suite, with the main bedroom also featuring a walk-in closet.
The apartment is only a few minutes’ walk from Coldingham Sands, a sheltered horseshoe of golden sand sprinkled with a rainbow assortment of beach huts and framed on either side by hills and cliffs in an area known for its dramatic coastline and outstanding natural beauty. The beach is popular with families, divers and surfers and boasts a surf school and a café. It is also famed for its marine life with vast rock pools emerging at low tide and seals, dolphins and even whales often visible from the shore.
Perfect for families, dog lovers, Marvel fans, walkers wanting to explore the wild coastline or those just looking to chill and enjoy some peace and quiet. Welcome to Miami. Scottish style!
