ABOUT PLUM ISLAND. Plum Island is an 11 mile long barrier island just off the shore of Newburyport, Mass. The island faces the Atlantic Ocean and is separated from the mainland by a causeway that crosses spectacular tidal marshes and the Parker and Merrimac Rivers. Most of Plum Island is part of the 4,600 acre Parker River Wildlife Refuge.
The remaining part, the northern end of the island is populated with an eclectic mix of cottages, 'architectural mistakes' and trophy homes that truly make it movie set worthy! Just steps away from any home is the beach, ten gorgeous, pristine, unspoiled miles of it. The sunrises, the sunsets, and the stargazing are stunning.
Plum Island has one small, very luxurious beach front hotel, a handful of shops and 3 restaurants, all within walking distance from the cottage. The historic town of Newburyport is the quintessential New England town with a very sophisticated selection of shops, restaurants, galleries and theaters. Day trips abound, as does anything else you would want to do; golf, tennis, boating, kayaking, whale watching, horseback riding, yoga, spas and spa treatments, antiquing, out let shopping etc.
Legend says that Plum Island is a one of a very few Native American sacred sites in North American for healing. I choose to believe this is true. To those that feel it, Plum Island has a very seductive charm and allure.

This home is spectacular!
My husband and I spent three nights here in October, expecting a cool fall weekend with beautiful views. The sunsets and sunrises were heavenly from the second floor and gorgeous decks, but the house itself is just lovely. Top notch finish work, beautifully decorated, not a detail missed and perfectly appointed with every amenity. The beach is about 40 steps away, a funky breakfast spot three doors down, 2 unique restaurants within walking distance, and 2 package stores with everything from Calzone to Silver Oak Cab. We brought our bikes and took an easy 3.5 mile ride along the Parker River Wildlife Refuge that was incredibly peaceful, abounding with blue herons, egrets, and birders. There are several stops with picturesque boardwalks out to nearly deserted beaches as far as you can see. We also kayaked in the basin accessing it literally around the corner from the house- not advisable on an outgoing tide -but the luxurious outdoor shower came in handy to rinse off the muck!
This cottage was perfect for our stay, and could easily accommodate another couple, though I am glad we had it to ourselves with no schedule. My only regret was not leaving enough time to explore the owners interesting book collection...hopefully next visit!
Beautiful, well appointed house on Plum Island
I live in Newburyport, only three miles away from this location, and we rented the house off-season for my family to stay in when they were in town visiting. It was November and a little too cold to make use of the outdoor space but the inside of the house was warm and comforting. Eleanor was a very responsive host and the house had all the essentials you would need for a short or long stay. Although not right on the beach, the lot across Northern Boulevard is empty so you could still see the sunrise and the ocean from the second floor. The bedrooms do not have TVs and a large dinner table make the house conducive to time with family or friends. If you are looking for a party house at the beach this is not it but if you are looking for a beautiful comfortable space to stay and enjoy all the area has to offer, you've found it.
Fantastic Winter Escape
We arrived on Plum Island during a small Nor'Easter but upon driving up to this charming cottage on the beach, our minds forgot about the weather, we entered through the door and we spent the next 6 days enjoying this wonderful and relaxing cottage. We enjoyed the home very much and it really was an easy decision for our group of 4 adults to rent this cottage over a couple of hotel rooms. Newburyport is a quick drive up the road, we found all we needed to make our week a perfect time. The home is well furnished, the kitchen is fully stocked with great appliances and dishwares, the beds were comfy, the bathrooms perfect and the fireplace came in handy a couple of the cold nights to take the chill out of the air, although the heat worked very well in the home too. The lobster pot was used often as we enjoyed buying our lobsters in town or right from the lobstermen in Gloucester, a quick and easy drive from the cottage. If we return to the area, we will definitely return to the cottage and rent again.
Just what we needed!
We just spent a rest filled weekend at this lovely home. Two busy Mom's took time out to refill our cups. We walked on the beach, napped in the most comfy beds with lovely linens and found fabulous places to dine with out having to leave Plum Island. When we did leave the Island there were endless things to do in Newburyport. Many shops to poke through and more great restaurants. This home is very clean and has everything you could need for a beach vacation.
My husband and I just returned from an incredible weekend at the cottage on Plum Island. The house was so clean and was decorated beautifully. The roof top deck is a slice of heaven and the master bedroom makes you feel like you are sleeping in a cloud. Watch the sunrise from bed in the mornings. Short walk to beach, views of ocean front and back. Mad Martha's (delicious artsy spot) three doors down for a delicious breakfast and great coffee. I would definitely return with my kids and recommend this house. Thank you for sharing your home!
