Location:
Villa Javert is located in a traditional village in the Hérault department of France, 11km from the historic town of Pézenas with its famous Saturday morning market.
Set on the road leading to the village, you can stroll out of your house and along the pavement until you reach the heart of the village within a couple of minutes. The characterful village is home to a privately owned château dating back to the 15th century as well as a traditional French restaurant usually open five days a week for lunch and evening meals. Find further amenities including restaurants and a supermarket in the small town of Roujan (2.5km) passing rural landscapes and vineyards as you drive.
Pézenas (11km) is exquisite with its old buildings and beautiful lanes – the town is protected as a French historic monument. Many of the houses date back to the 16th to 18th century, there is a medieval Jewish ghetto and the impressive Collégiale Saint-Jean. Explore the old quarter with its little antique shops, lovely restaurants and delightful shops as you follow the footsteps of the French playwright Molière, ending at the Théâtre de Pézenas. The Saturday morning market is the region’s largest and most historic, a fantastic place to pick up a wealth of Languedoc delicacies.
Of course, this region is also known for its charming little villages, wineries and endless vineyards whilst all sorts of regional specialities can be found such as goats cheese, sweet onions, figs, wild herbs and of course oysters from the Étang du Thau, best accompanied by a chilled glass of local white wine. Find many restaurants serving oysters in the historic town of Mèze (30km) and take boat trips out to the oyster beds.
The Languedoc coastline also awaits whether you experience the hustle and bustle of Cap d’Agde and Marseillan Plage or the wilder shores beyond Vias Plage. From summer watersports, fairgrounds and theme parks to stunning coastal walks, there is plenty to keep every age entertained along this part of the Mediterranean.
Venturing further north, Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert (52km) can be reached in under an hour, one of France’s ‘Plus Beaux Villages’ and a UNESCO World Heritage site, or continue onwards to discover the fascinating caves at Grotte des Demoiselles. Lac du Salagou (30km) is a picturesque spot for nature walks, picnics and summer watersports on the lake in beautiful surroundings.
