Captain's Cabin Shepherd's Hut with Hot Tub, on the edge of the North York Moors
This adult only escape is perfectly placed, over the road from the North York Moors National Park, with spectacular views of the iconic National Trust Roseberry Topping and Guisborough Forest. Ideal for the Cleveland Way or Coast and only 25 miles from Whitby. Surrounded by countryside, you can fully immerse yourself in nature whilst being a mere 5 minute drive from the busy market town of Guisborough and quaint village of Great Ayton. The heart of the countryside...but with the option of an uber into town and a takeaway!
Step aboard the Captain's cabin - reminiscent of the famous HMS Endeavour, which our local 18th Century explorer Captain James Cook sailed around the world in. Born just 7 miles from Roseberry Retreat and going to school in our local Great Ayton Village, you'll feel like you've had a further glimpse into his adventures while staying in this hut full of genuine seafaring equipment and nautical treasures.
This hut is modelled on the traditional Shepherd's huts of the 19th Century but is equipped with all the luxuries of the modern day: a king size bed, dining table and chairs, kitchenette (including gas hob, small fridge/freezer, kettle and toaster) and private ensuite shower room & toilet.
Outside is your private two person wood fired hot tub underneath the pergola to enjoy the incredible night skies! We offer a hot tub pre-lighting service for a small charge, so you can arrive to a warm hot tub! Just let us know in the messages if this is something you're interested in.
One parking space is provided next to the hut, with solar lighting marking the space, all bed linen and toiletries are provided for your stay.
This hut is dog (pet) friendly, for an extra cleaning fee of £30, please select this option at check out if you would like to bring your furry friend! We will leave a few basic amenities for your pet - including a bed, blanket and food/water bowls.
We do have non-dog friendly huts available on site if you'd prefer - check out The Old Library, The Whisky Parlour & The Snug!
This is an adult only retreat, we are therefore unable to accept bookings of children under 18, apologies! Whilst we do love children and have our own, there is a stream which runs along the field which is not fenced off and therefore not safe for little ones.
From the road, you will turn onto a private driveway, this is shared with us, our neighbours and guests of the site, so please take care when turning in/out.
There is then a private gravel track for Roseberry Retreat leading down the field to the huts, this will take you to your private parking space beside the hut.
There is a gravel area at the front of the hut for you to use, as well as a paved patio area under the pergola.
We offer self check in, for ease and convenience for our guests. We know some people like to come here to escape from the busy world and prefer the quiet, peace and flexibility this offers.
We are based in the farmhouse on site, so are almost always available, should you need anything at all. We would love to pop down and meet you during your stay - if this is something you would like.
We will provide a phone number for you and we will try to respond as quickly as possible - please note this is also our family home, so we may have a little one with us if/when we come down to assist with anything :) this also means that unless it is an emergency, we will be available until 7pm most days.
There are four steps up into the hut itself and three steps into the private hot tub.
Children are unfortunately not allowed.
This hut is dog friendly (optional extra, which includes a charge of £30 to bring your pet or £45 for two - the space is relatively small, so please review photos to ensure you and your pets would be comfortable in the space).
There is no TV or WiFi provided at the huts, we find it has good phone and internet signal, but we hope you enjoy the digital detox while you're here!
We have six huts on site which are cleverly positioned at least 20m apart to make you feel like you're the only ones here!
We are surrounded by working farmland, which means that on occasion there are sounds and smells which are beyond our control!
Our prices include all fees. No hidden fees.

Lovely stay we really enjoyed the peace and calmness of the surroundings. Joanna the host and her husband were very charming and helpful. Hut was spotless. Bathroom was surprisingly good (as we always worry about these things, don't we!). Didn't use the firewood hot tub but it was neatly attached to the hut space. Breakfast with the cows looking from the field was a delight. Would go back. Recommended.
Would definitely recommend to anyone! Hosts were so kind and caring. The view was amazing and the hottub was lush! We are definitely coming back and we even got engaged!! The cabin was so comfortable and cosy and the bed especially. Very clean!

About the host
Hosted by Joanna Sykes
I'm Joanna, born in Sunderland in the 90's, my husband and I have lived in quite a few places, from Northern Ireland, Scotland, Kent and London. We're really happy to be back up in the North East and putting down roots in this beautiful location with our little family. I absolutely love nature, wildlife & the outdoors as well as reading, gardening and art - you might be able to see all these influences here at Roseberry Retreat!
Why they chose this property
Pinchinthorpe is a gorgeous little hamlet situated half way between the bustling market town of Guisborough and the quaint village of Great Ayton. It feels like you're in the middle of nowhere - but so close to lots of amenities! We are just over the road from the North York Moors, with spectacular views of Roseberry Topping and Guisborough Forest & we have stunning beaches just 15mins drive away with Saltburn and Marske - it really is a great place to be.
What makes this property unique
We have built these Shepherd's Huts from scratch ourselves, we have chosen every single detail that goes into them & each hut is a different theme which we have poured our hearts and souls into. We really hope you choose to stay and enjoy all the little details (not to mention the insanely comfy beds & wood fired hot tubs, perfect for stargazing!!)
