The Sites: The most iconic landmarks of Athens are just a stroll away. In eight minutes (650m), you can reach the Panathenaic Stadium (the original marble Olympic stadium). From there, cross the avenue into the National Garden and the Zappeion area. Exiting the park to the northwest (1km) takes you to Syntagma Square, the Parliament, and the main downtown shopping district.
From here, you can head north to the upscale Kolonaki quarter and its many museums, or hike up Lycabettus Hill for a 360-degree view of Athens. Alternatively, from the stadium, a 14-minute walk west takes you past the Temple of Olympian Zeus to the Acropolis Museum (1.1km). Continue along the pedestrianized Areopagitou Street toward Philopappos Hill and the Pnyx (the meeting place of the ancient Athenian Assembly). A stroll around the hill offers breathtaking views of the Acropolis and the Saronic Gulf islands.
Finally, ascend the Acropolis to visit the Parthenon. On your way down, stop at Areopagus Hill before heading into Monastiraki and the Ancient Agora to see the Stoa of Attalos and the well-preserved Temple of Hephaestus (a “smaller scale” Parthenon with the same architecture). Return home through the winding, historic streets of Plaka and Anafiotika.
