Daufuskie Island boasts an amazing diversity of wildlife, it is a great island for land and sea bird watching, including our famous bald eagles, great horned owls, endangered wood storks and egret rookery. More than sixty species of birds make their home here. Other species to watch for include gators, white tail deer, and the super cute southern fox squirrels with their black and white faces. Dedicated breeders are also working to bring back the endangered Marsh Tacky horse on the island, with two foals born this past year.
Daufuskie Island is accessible by private boat or ferry. Residents and vacationers alike report feeling their stress slip away as they watch the dolphins and sea birds on the ride from the mainland. On Daufuskie, the uncrowded roads are great for golf cart site seeing, walking, running and bike riding. Most residents on the island use golf carts as their mode of transportation and Melrose plantation prohibits use of passenger cars and trucks, so a golf cart is a must. Hilton Head Island is easily accessible via the county ferry for a day of site seeing, golfing, water sports and shopping, but don't forget to visit the artisans and unique shop keepers that make their homes on the island. The county ferry offers a discounted day trip rate, the Island Hopper rate, from Daufuskie to Hilton Head
Sporting opportunities on Daufuskie include: ocean swimming, guided water sports with Tour Daufuskie, surf and dock fishing, crabbing, biking, golfing, and equestrian activities. Crabbing and fishing charters will pick you up at the county dock for a day of intercostal or ocean fishing. The county ferry will transport your bike to the island at no charge. Arrangements can also be made for golf and tennis at one of the numerous facilities on Hilton Head.
Important Considerations for a Daufuskie Vacation: You will need to bring your major groceries with you (no charge on the county ferry). There are several unique restaurants and two general stores that stock some necessities and adult beverages. There is no bridge, you will need to access the island by ferry or private boat charter. If you choose Daufuskie Island Ferry (county ferry contractors), a reasonable amount of luggage, groceries and sporting equipment travels with you at no additional charge. You will also need ground transport from the dock to your home, there are contractors who specialize in this service. As noted above, you will also need to rent a golf cart for transportation on the island, as the attractions on the island are located throughout the island. Our on island transportation specialist will work with you, once you book with us, to help you find affordable and reliable transportation for your visit. You can expect to pay $35.00 per round trip for a ferry ticket (luggage inclusive) and $20.00 per person ($10.00 per child) for ground transport. Golf carts range in price by size of cart and number of days reserved.
