Our family has been in Pentwater for over 100 years, and we have renovated this historic home (built 1869) right in the heart of Pentwater with families and special needs in mind, and with an eye towards modern functionality and historical charm. As for location, it is a 1/2 block from downtown and an easy stroll to the beach (or take the back route up the dunes to Mt Baldy). Its deep setback and large rear deck ensure tranquility and privacy even though it is right in the heart of the village.
There is ample off-street parking off the alleyway in addition to parking on the street. The front porch is the place to catch the morning sun with your coffee. The back deck has space for everyone for private evenings outdoors (including the grill). The back yard has the fire pit for s'mores at night as well as an extra patio. The side yard can be used for boccie ball.
As for the interior, the house has SIX bedrooms (all conforming - no converted closets), so there is room for multiple generations - two down and four up. There is also a single size pull out sofa in the upstairs nook if there are more grand kids than you can count. There is a full bath on each level.
Importantly, we have renovated the house with grandparents and anyone with special needs in mind. The entire first floor is fully ADA compliant - meeting all commercial code requirements. A ramp leads from the handicap parking in the back to the deck. The transition from deck to house is almost seamless. There are no floor height differentials on the entire first floor (two bedrooms). The bedrooms have wide doors, and the master bedroom is en suite, . The bathroom has a 5'x5' fully tiled roll-in shower area. The kitchen has been designed with wheelchairs in mind: roll-under stove, roll-under sink, wall-mounted stove, wheel chair friendly seating, and ADA-compliant appliances throughout.
The main floor layout is an open living plan, with the kitchen, dining, and living rooms flowing into each other and right out onto the rear deck through the French doors. The 65" TV provides plenty of viewing for everyone, and a second TV in the upstairs sitting room is perfect for sequestering the kids.

Easy house to stay in and a great beach town vacation. House was exactly as advertised with plenty of space for sleeping, cooking, and family meals. Deck and backyard were great for relaxing before and after beach time
We had a wonderful stay in this lovely and spacious home. The host was very accommodating and the welcome gifts from local shops were a nice touch. The home's location is ideal for those who enjoy walking to the beach, shops and just admiring the beautiful neighborhoods. We enjoyed coffee on the porch in the morning sunshine, meals on the large deck and evening campfires in the backyard. We are thankful for the ways this home enhanced our Pentwater Vacation.
Property was very handicap accessible. We were so happy to find a vacation rental that could accommodate my son and his power chair. We had a wonderful time and would recommend it to anyone who needs an ADA compliant home or just a very spacious place to vacation. Our host was very accommodating and quick to respond to any questions or concerns that we had.
This home was just what was needed for our family of 6 adults and two young children; and two dogs. Enough space for us to all be together both inside and on the lovely back deck. The home was warm and welcoming with games available, kitchen with everything we needed, and very comfortable beds. The best time together!
We really enjoyed the house and the location. The one downside is that the upstairs AC is minimal. The host herself is very gracious and communicative, but her relative across the street was rude and indicated that she was watching us. The next door neighbor started his wood chipper at 6:00 AM several mornings during our stay.
We have been coming to Pentwater for years and this has been by far our favorite house that we have rented. The location is perfect for walking to the beach and downtown. The house has a fenced in yard, which is awesome to have for the dogs (especially since most of the rentals don’t allow dogs). There are lots of beds and did not feel overcrowded at all. The house also has a second fridge, which was great to have with our large group. Definitely recommend staying here. We cannot wait to come back next summer!!
We needed a house with several bedrooms plus a fenced yard for the dogs. This house got the bill. It’s been updated and if you are wheel chair bound, this house accomodates. It’s a block from downtown Pentwater and 4 blocks from Lake Michigan and a beautiful beach. Our teens loved the town- there are lots of shops and restaurants. Fun things to do within a 20 minute drive I.e. horse back riding, go carts, mini golf and fine buggies. Farmers market is twice a week. Great family area!!
I could write a long review but with so many good things to say I will touch on just a few. The home is beautiful and worked very well for us, including my mom who spends most of her time in a wheelchair. Kitchen, bedrooms and beds, living areas are all large and comfortable. The ramp to/from the deck was such a blessing so we could take mom with us on walks, downtown, and to the beach. (ramp does get a bit slippery after heavy rain). The firepit was great for us to gather around at night. The proximity to downtown, and the beach is amazing. Thank you to Kyra and Patricia for making this a wonderful place to stay.
Don’t think it had been occupied for a while. Grill was quite dirty. No garbage bags or extra toilet paper.
Location was nice. Lots of plates, silverware, cups and glasses. Not many sharp knives or serving bowls for a house that large. We were a little disappointed for what we paid.
Perfect location! Less than a block to cute downtown Pentwater, and an easy walk to the beach. Free beach parking with park pass license plate for seniors or if you have chairs etc. Be aware this is a dog friendly home ( although we had no dog) but very clean inside with no sign or smell of dog. Yard is very kid friendly with plenty of space for soccer games and water balloon fights. Front porch and back deck were nice for morning coffee and afternoon drinks. Furnishings are older but comfortable. It would have been nice to have a couple of beach chairs available, but wood for the fire pit , and bags of local coffee and s’more fixings was a nice perk. All and all, a great space for our 3 generation, 5 adults and 5 kids vacation. We will add it to the list for possible stays in the future.
Everyone enjoyed themselves in this home. Plenty of bedrooms to choose from. House is historic. Home is located close to town and you can walk everywhere. The town is friendly and welcoming. Would recommend this home.
This home away from home is situated on the Main Street in Pentwater. Step out the front door and you can walk to the local shops, grab a bite to eat, or have an ice cream treat. The beach is a short walk too! The home is very spacious and offers many bedrooms for multi-generational families. The back deck is also large so we could enjoy grilling out and playing games. The backyard is fenced in so our dog could run and play.
We loved our stay here and hope to be back. It was so nice to have an accessible house so my dad could enjoy the vacation as well, he was even able to make it down to the beach. Great location to walk all over Pentwater.
My family had an excellent stay at this property. I honestly think the pictures don't do it justice. We had someone who is disabled in our group and the accessibility was a key factor in our decision to rent this house. The bathroom was excellent and it was easy to get in and out of the house via the ramp. Because he has a few accessibility aids, we did have to shift some furniture out of the way so he could move safety, but nothing significant. We loved the location. It was a quick 1/4 mile to the beach, and the beach had an accessible table and beach wheelchair. Definitely a great and relaxing week, and I would highly recommend this house. Thanks again.
Owner responsive to questions and helpful with suggestions. Plenty of room for us to spread out. The 3 year olds loved racing up and down the ramp. Ice cream shop was 1 block away. Beach an easy walk even for the toddlers. Took advantage of the fire pit several nights. propane grill made outdoor cooking easy after we spent some time cleaning the accumulation of grease. The fenced yard gave extra security with the little grand babies. Would rebook in the future
Plenty of room and great location to downtown Pentwater. The kitchen, dining area, and living room are open to each other so we all could be together. The two bathrooms was not an issue for our 10 adult, two children & dog stay. Fenced in yard was great for our dog. Weather didn't permit us to be outside much but the fire pit did look inviting.
Second year we have stayed here. Wonderful area to take a walk. Always something new to do. Great for multigenerational family with ramp and bedrooms on the first floor.

About the host
Hosted by Kyra Goodrich
I grew up spending every year in Pentwater, but now I live with my husband and seven children in the Upper Peninsula, where I like to fly fish, raise chickens and rabbits, and spend as much time as possible outdoors. Travel, especially a new-found love of inn-to-inn hiking in Europe, is another important part of our lives.
Why they chose this property
My family has been in Pentwater for over a hundred years (six generations), and our relatives are still right there. We know the village well - the beach, marina, and downtown are all a few steps away. The 4th of July and Homecoming parades march right past our front yard. We bring our family back each year now that we live in the UP, and we want to share our love of this village.
What makes this property unique
The 1869 House is a registered historic house that has been updated for maximum comfort, including for those with disabilities. The sheer number of bedrooms when combined with the ADA compliant first floor and the kid-friendly touches mean that this house has families of all types in mind. We want you to enjoy it as much as we do and use it as your base to explore the area. Spend mornings on the front port for coffee in the sun, afternoons in the fenced yard with your dog, dinners on the deck, and evenings around the fire pit. But the 1869 also stands out for our hands-on management. This is run by the family - not an agency. If we can't take care of an unexpected issue right away, the local handymen (who are hard-working friends) can. These are the same people who helped renovate the house, and their commitment to their craftsmanship continues.
