About The Owner

Julie and I have lived in the Colorado Springs area for over 40 years. Shortly after we were married, we moved to the Bay Area of California as a young professional couple. But, having both grown up in Colorado, we wanted our kids to know their grandparents, enjoy the mountains, and have the advantage of growing up in a wholesome community. So, although as a couple of twenty-somethings we loved the opportunities the California lifestyle had provided for ourselves, we decided to move back to Colorado for the sake of our kids and have been here ever since. We have never regretted that decision.

The Owner purchased this house in 2004

Why The Owner chose Colorado Springs

The Antler Creek house was built as a model home by a well known local builder. We were impressed by the upgraded finishes and furnishings throughout the house, as well as the floor plan. We also loved that it was located on a great public golf course and in a recreational community within walking distance of the rec center. So we made the investment!

We had the house professionally decorated and supplied it as if we and our extended family were to vacation there ourselves. As a result, the positive feedback we have gotten from our guests has been most satisfying. Many of them have returned--thank you all!

What makes this house unique

We live in Colorado Springs ourselves, so we don't vacation in this house. So we had the house decorated with good quality furniture, furnishings, and conveniences as if we, ourselves, were staying there. For example, we wanted everyone to be able to eat at the same time as a family rather than in shifts, so there are place settings and seating at a table or counter throughout the house for everyone to eat simultaneously. And we invested in the same quality mattresses and towels/linens as we have in our own residence. We have the house professionally cleaned after each guest.

The house is great for family-oriented conversation and activities. Besides the open floor plan which enhances the feeling of togetherness, the home theater, pool table, wet bar, private putting green, library with over a hundred books (many of them inspirational), WiFi, and home audio the house it self offers, the convenient Golfing at one of the most challengining public courses West of the Mississippi, the private recreation center with basketball, workout areas, ping-pong, foosball, air hockey and indoor and outdoor swimming pools, all combine together to offer a great family vacation experience. The house itself has a picturesque setting, with a pond and the 15th green of the Antler Creek golf course in the foreground and majestic Pikes Peak as a backdrop. You can even see some snow-caps in the Sangre de Cristo range 80 miles away on a clear day!

Hello Don,

I just wanted to thank you for sharing your lovely home with us this past week. It worked out perfectly for our family and we enjoyed every minute of our stay. Everything went even better than we could have hoped for. We aren't able to gather often as a family so it was a very special time for us.

Thank you for being easy to work with. We will never forget our experiences with our family in Colorado.

Okay, but disappointing

  • 3 of 5

I really hate to complain as the owners seem very nice and our family has used VRBO homes for Florida trips and always been impressed with them. We needed a house for 4 days for a family reunion so at least 5 bedrooms were needed to sleep 4 couples, 2 with kids, and my mother. We found this house to be conveniently near Colorado Springs and our reunion events as well as shopping. It was as described and had everything we needed, including parking for our 4 vehicles (3 inside which can be important in hailstorm season), plus room for one more.

It would have been perfect if it were not for the many little issues. When we first arrived my mother and I noticed that the house seemed grimy, like it had not been consistently cleaned, especially the carpeted areas. One of our group woke up with bites on one arm after sleeping in an upstairs bedroom. The downstairs hide-a-bed in the bedroom had been torn off the frame on two sides nor did it have a mattress cover on it. Because it was for a child, we ended up using the mattress on the floor. The receiver on the basement media center was out of order but we were able to reroute the cables to make it work for us. A plug in one bedroom shorted out the whole room when something was plugged into it, but was fine if it wasn't used. Other problems seemed to be related to age, some of the chairs in formal dining area sank in the middle, for example. The lock box with one key arrangement was difficult; being required to keep the key in the house instead of locked in the box while people were in the house meant we were always in fear that the last person out would forget to lock the key in the box and we would get locked out. Other places we have stayed have combination locks that can be changed remotely.

Most of these problems were discovered late at night so even though the owner was apologetic and said he was unaware of them and offered to fix them we had already found ways to adapt. I realize that some problems don't show up until you need to use something or people to fail to report them so everyone was understanding, but a cleaner place would have made all the difference.

Owner's Response: We are pleased that this guest found the house to be convenient for their purposes and to have the size and features they desired. We appreciate all feedback from our guests, whether favorable or not. However, it is a great concern to us when our guests are less than completely satisfied with their stay. There are many maintenance issues occurring during a guest's stay which are obvious to our professional housekeepers, but others are nearly impossible to detect unless a guest who uses a certain feature notifies us. In both cases, when we learn of issues, we correct them as quickly as possible. I would like to respond to each point. Grimy carpets: I apologize for not correcting this earlier. The carpets in the entire house were professionally steam-cleaned today. Insect bites: The entire house was treated by a professional pest control company soon after this party departed. After a follow-up inspection by the company, we have confidence the insect problem no longer exists. The downstairs hideabed: It has been removed and replaced with a brand new futon. Receiver bi-passed in home theater: We ask all our guests to not alter the cabling in our home theater. Unfortunately, this sometimes happens with today's tech savvy generation. I personally checked the TV and DVD player, which now operate independently of the bi-passed receiver. Inoperable outlet: The wall outlet in question is seldom used. Thanks to the reporting of its malfunctioning by this guest, it has now been replaced. Dining room chairs: this is the first complaint we have ever received about our dining room chairs. If this complaint reappears, I will replace them. Keys: We leave only one key in the lock-box for security reasons. Starting with our next guest, the lock box code will be changed with each new arrival, accommodating guests who wish to leave their key in the lockbox throughout their stay. Grandma’s Birthday

Very nice big house with high quality furnishings. The large kitchen and pantry work well with big groups. The upstairs rooms get warm when the temp is in the high 90s.

Owner's Response: Thank you for staying with us. Regarding the A/C system, we had a new system installed this past spring. The company who did the installation changed the ductwork to provide cooler air to the upstairs bedrooms. Their temperature has been measured as 2-3 degrees warmer than the main floor, which is normal. The lower level, on the other hand, is a few degrees cooler than the main floor since cold air tends to fall. Thankfully, we very rarely have temperatures in the high 90's.

Colorado Vacation

Overall we had a great time, We had 16 family members. The house was as advertised, which allowed us to kind of spread out. Was close enough to see all the attractions around Colorado Springs, but far enough out to feel as you were in the country.

Mahannah/Schenck/Folk/Maxwell reunion

  • 5 of 5

The house was beautiful and perfectly laid out for large groups. We mainly congregated around the kitchen table and the table on the deck. But we also enjoyed playing pool in the basement. The home was close to attractions in Colorado Springs, and we never had to drive more than 30 minutes to participate in awesome activities and enjoy beautiful sites. Information was timely for entry and we were thankful we opted to stay here instead of a hotel. Free access to the recreational center was a bonus, and we did use it the first day. My grandson took pictures with his I-Pad when we arrived, and before we left, he visited every room again because he loved the house!
