The resort staff are very friendly and helpful , the appartment kitchen was well stocked but needed a kitchen stepping stool as the top cupboards are high , also a sievewould have been helpful. A few minor problems need to be sorted , 1 broken bedside light , lamp in livingroom not working, safe in bedroom not working overall the appartment was good we stayed there 11 nights but was no offered a sheet change. The hotel staff took us to our accommodation and dropped our luggage at the door . Overall the appartment was good. Our host kept us informed along the way .

Lovely property

With this property you get the best of both worlds- you get to enjoy all the resort facilities: pools, tennis courts, kids club, entertainment, gym, beaches etc but don’t have to pay all inclusive prices and you can go to town, get to see the shops, markets and restaurants and try out the delicious seafood. It’s worth bringing any frozen meat you would like in your suitcase but other than that you can get what you need in the supermarket

Great stay!

We stayed a total of 2 weeks on Sal and the first few days at this appartment. It was the way we wanted it to be, enjoying the facilities and swimming pools of the resort to start our holiday and still having our own place. We mainly stayed at the resort and explored more the island from our other apartment in Santa Maria. We dived with cabo verde diving and could walk from the apartment to the dive base in 5 minutes. Which was great for us!

Better than Expected!

Secure, within a large complex that has everything, swimming pools, entertainment, bars, restaurants, free sun beds (by the pool and beach), clean large sun bed towels (towel card is 20 euros deposit, change as often as you like throughout your duration, 20 returned when card returned). We stayed self catering, because less than 2 miles from Santa Maria’s supermarkets, bars, restaurants and gift shops. Hundreds of taxis, which none charged more than 5 euros each way. So much I could say, thoroughly loved it and will be back! I loved

The WiFi is one bar and doesn’t reach no room only near the balcony. DONT talk English nor understand it. Ac was dusty. No vent in bathrooms. Pools are all small / waist live. I would say they are nice and made us feel safe.

The best of both worlds - lovely private apartment with all of the resort faclities

The apartment is well maintained and was spotlessly clean. A couple of really minor issues were almost instantly resolved and the communication throughout the booking and the stay was excellent.The resort common areas are clean and well maintained. There’s always loads of vacant loungers on the sunny and pleasantly breezy beach. Buy drinks or coffee from the hotel bars with your credit card which are cheap and strong! The Dunas hotel has some bad reviews but that doesn’t affect the apartment or common areas so don’t let that put you off.Villa Verde supermarket is an easy 10 min walk away or shop in town at the Chinese-run Huang Supermarket had the best range and prices. The host can recommend great restaurants. Also try Cafe Creolo for the best cooked grilled fish I’ve ever had - and for something a bit fancier try Sal Grosso. Walk about 20 mins south down the beach to Ponta Preta for amazing seafood on the beach (plus free sunloungers for customers). Taxis are readily available outside the resort to town with a fixed fare of EUR5. It’s also a safe 35 min walk back from town if you prefer.Santa Maria is very safe but scruffy in places (this is Africa not Europe). On the beach folks will try to sell you souvenirs but they’ll leave you alone if you give them a polite but firm “no”. The resort’s WiFi is slow so don’t count on streaming movies while you’re here so download the Google Map of the island for offline use and use free restaurant WiFi to sync your Facebook!

Perfect for us

We have recently returned home from a 2 week stay in Roy’s apartment. We really loved the location. We had previously been to the island last year but wanted to stay 2 weeks this time. The whole apartment is great, no issues with anything. Air con works great, hot water, very clean. A mid stay clean was also carried out which was great. The hotel itself is quite busy with all the sun loungers getting reserved early on the pools and beach but usually lunchtime we would get a spot on the beautiful beach front. It gets very hot though. The balcony and roof terrace was a lovely touch. Me and my partner often sunbathed on the roof terrace with no one else around which was lovely and private. We also fed the sparrows bread crumbs in the mornings and evening and the same pair used to come back which was sweet to see. We didn’t do all inclusive as we prefer to explore the place we visit and all inclusive doesn’t really for accommodate that, we really enjoyed the town and the taxi ride is only €3. Mareas was our favourite but you have to book in advance on what’s app. We also really liked cultural cafe and palm beach. We also used the apartment guide and hired a car through surf hub and got a 4X4 for the day for €60, we did our own island tour and it was really great. Highly recommend taking snorkel equipment for the sea. It’s stunning and I loved it. We will return again for sure. Thanks again.

Good value, great owner, okay property.

The unit is within a very large Melia complex however it is close to the main hotel building. The beach is a bit of a walk. There are pools scattered throughout the property so finding a pool is not a big issue. The rooms are comfortable and the AC works but the kitchen area is very small with limited counter space. The refrigerator is a small (very) bar style fridge so if staying a longer time (more than a week) plan to grocery shop in Santa Maria often. The kitchen could use the addition of a toaster oven and a cutting board as well as manuals for other kitchen appliances. The wifi is okay but not great. A signal booster would be a great help. The best thing about the unit is the owner. If you have a problem or need some advice and e-mail Roy, you will hear back (usually with a resolution) within an hour. Amazing attention to his guests. SAL is for kite surfers, sail boarders, fishermen and scuba divers. If you are going for a week, there is enough to do to keep you occupied. More than a week, I would recommend visiting other islands as a part of your trip. The condo is a 5 Euro ride to/from town and there are a lot of decent restaurants there. The washer in the unit is very good so bring a few laundry pods and you will be all set to keep your clothes clean. The unit is advertised with a roof top patio and it does have that but nothing to sit on up there so we did not use it. This is a comfortable unit but not luxurious. Excellent apartment, great facilities at the hotel, lovely island

We stayed for 2 weeks in April, family of 4, with 2 daughters aged 4 and 7. Roy was very helpful prior to our trip, providing contacts for airport transfers and car hire, and information about the island (shops, restaurants etc). The hotel is really good - our kids loved the waterslides, pools and the playground, and also had fun at the kids club. Pools are good with plenty of sunbeds - although towels were a little scarce! We had a lovely day on a "Bali Bed" on the beach - with fruit and prosecco included for €25. The vast majority of guests at the hotel are all-inclusive but we didn't find it particularly difficult getting meals / drinks etc. Breakfast at the main buffet was €24 per adult and the kids were free - dinner was €50 per adult and again kids were free. We also ate in one of the other restaurants a couple of times - each restaurant has both a small buffet / walk up station (eg pasta bar) and a la carte - there is a price for the buffet and a priced a la carte menu if you ask - we ended up just having the buffet and it was €25 per adult - again kids were free. Drinks at the bars during the day were €2 for a bottle of water or a glass of coke. We decided not to bother with any days all-inclusive - the price would have been €65 per adult and €33 per child per day. Santa Maria is a lovely town, either €3 taxi ride (€4 at night) or about 30 minute walk. There are lots of good restaurants and we ended up eating in town most nights - we didn't have a bad meal at all. We tested the tuna tartar in most restaurants and decided the best was in Angela's, a restaurant on the front, just along from the pier! There is only one supermarket in town - we didn't actually cook in the apartment, and only ever ate breakfast there (cereal and toast) so can't really comment on how easy self-catering would be - but there did seem to be a selection of basics. Amy at "Surf Hub" was really helpful with car hire and other outings - we had a car for a day and did a tour of the island - salt mines were great viewed from the top of the hill (we didn't go in), the blue eye was good - best bit was the natural pool. We also did a half day sailing trip with some snorkeling, the kids had a body board for a few days and my husband had kite surfing lessons which he loved - all arranged for us by Amy. In summary - a fantastic 2 week break, perfect apartment and hotel, and I would definitely recommend exploring the town and island.

Great stay In cape verde

Just spent the week in Roy's apartment in the complex of Melia dunas/ sol dunas. First of all the hotel is amazing, lots of pools and easy to get sun loungers, fab entertainment, helpful staff who go above and beyond for you. Secondly , the apartment is lovely with a fab roof top Terrace and balcony. It was squeaky clean and can not complain about the cleanliness. However I only give 4 stars as I really think essentials such as washing up liquid, bin bags and toilet roll should be included in the price of the apartment. Also I found it strange how we had to pay extra money for a maid to clean the room midweek - this should also be included in the price. Also there was lots of meat knives but no bread knife? Little extras like this would be ideal. And we had to find the manual for the oven and hob as we found it confusing - I think these manuals should be left out in future Roy. Another thing is the all inclusive / putting things on your account fiasco. It is really confusing and we did not bother doing this -- none of the staff seemed to know how much things cost and it was too expensive to go For separate meals (breakfast was €22 per person, lunch was €42 per person and dinner was €48 per person). You could go all inclusive for the day at €65 but we ate in town mainly. Also getting drinks in the hotel was hard work as nobody knew how to charge to our room so We ended up paying in euros - but the bars never had change! The town is a 5 minute drive away in a taxi at €3 day/€4 night. We also caught the free shuttle bus some mornings. The cazu supermarket was good and reasonably cheap - however the goods are limited so don't think you will find everything. The town is nice but Cape Verde is still developing - there is a lot of construction going on. The bars and restaurants were relatively cheap . Some people are lovely some people are just plain rude depending on where you go. And be prepared to be blagged to buy rubbish souviners. Never the less the beaches are lovely, and the hotel is spectacular. Would probably return to the same hotel all inclusive next time as it seemed to be easier. PS make sure you go to the lion king show... it was amazing!

I suggest doing all inclusive days rather than paying for individual meals as this is difficult but usually signing for drinks is not too difficult but remember the mantra on CV is 'no stress' ! 5* for apartment itself and for the owner's helpfulness, not for resort

I'll break the review down into 3 areas - the 2nd and 3rd area is important in the overall experience as you will see, but please bear in mind that my review on the resort and facilities will very quickly become outdated Apartment Roy's apartment is very clean, spacious and has everything that you'll need. In fact, I think it is one of the best in the resort because it also has a private accessible roof terrace-most other apartments which have a roof terrace, cannot access them as the stairs are blocked off. Great for us as we weren't overlooked by anyone so could so a bit of all over tanning! 2 air con units were great (master bedroom and living space). Washing machine invaluable. Roy himself was extremely helpful and answered all of our questions pre-departure. Resort This is where things get tricky. The resort is predominantly an all-inclusive hotel resort but have a small amount of privately bought apartments, such as Roy's. Because it is a new resort and because so few units are privately owned, staff really struggled with how to deal with us. There are no tills at the restaurants and bars so we had to open "an account" with our credit card at reception and then meals/drinks would be charged to our account for us to settle at the end. As it's mainly all-inclusive, there were no prices on the menus so it was very hard for us to keep a handle on how much we were spending....staff couldn't even tell us how much a beer was, and despite our "account", many of the staff still struggled with how to charge us, so every time we went to get a drink or have a meal, it was a painful and delayed process, to the point of dread, plus we were constantly worried about how much we were spending. Reception couldn't deal with problems that we had, such as faulty door card or patio door-we had to ring someone who wasn't on site that dealt with estate issues. Island This is where it gets really tricky. Despite Roy's apartment having everything we needed to self-cater, we struggled to self-cater because as everything is imported onto Sal, we found the choice of food in the supermarket extremely limited and in some cases extortionate e.g. a box of granola was about 14 euros! Santa Maria is rapidly developing so I think in time, a bigger and better stocked supermarket will be built and therefore our concerns can be disregarded, but in the meantime, do bear this in mind! "The Villa" restaurant - sublime Tours - DO book in town. Pete's shack has the best deals.

Thank you for your review Just a couple of points in response to the review: Paying by cash is tricky on Dunas and it is almost essential to open an account at reception. The food and drink is reasonably priced (most places have priced menus) but is definitely more cost effective if you do some all inclusive days where you get everything on Dunas and then some days when you eat and drink off site. Paying for individual meals and drinks on Dunas is not the best way to do it plus it is a bit more hassle. Most all inclusive resorts do not offer any flexibility, we feel on Dunas that the fact that they do offer different options is an advantage although accept it is not as slick as it might be. Maintenance,cleaning etc is done by a local company (English) and they always put a welcome letter in the apt for new guests. Yes hopefully the supermarket will improve but do remember it is an African island and everything needs to be imported. On days when we dont eat on Dunas we tend to go into town for breakfast and dinner where there is a very good selection of places to eat. Best wishes Roy

Estamos muy contentos con la elección que hicimos con el apartamento de Roy. Roy es un gran anfitrión siempre está a disposición de lo que puedas necesitar. El apartamento es perfecto y amplio, con todo lo necesario, la cocina está muy bien equipada, la lavadora y la plancha se agrádese para no llevar mucha ropa o para estancias largas. Las instalaciones del Hotel están muy bien cuidadas todo muy nuevo. Destino recomendado, las personas de Cabo Verde son muy amables y todo es muy tranquilo, puedes pasear por toda la isla con total tranquilidad.

Great spacious apartment in beautiful resort

Lovely apartment with loads of room, nice comfy sofas and beds, everything well equipped. The location is an all inclusive resort which has six swimming pools and a mini water park, and ends on a gorgeous beach with a lovely manmade cove - perfect for snorkeling. However, they are not really setup well for self catering and paying as you go. The nearest food shop is in the adjacent resort - about a 15 minute walk. Roy was great as a host - we had a couple of issues outside of his control (our boiler broke and our key card stopped working) and both issues were resolved in really quickly.

Everything was perfect

Thank you for a wonderful first visit to Cape Verde. The self catering was a great option for us and shops in Santa Maria had everything we needed. I’d suggest bringing English bits like tea and coffee and any home favourites. The place was spacious, clean and ideally located in the resort. The trip provider suggested in the brochure at the apartment was a great help and very reasonable. Roy was fantastic at communicating by email and couldn’t have asked for more.

Lovely well equipped apartment with beautiful sun terrace and great servace from the owner.

The apartment was spacious, clean and had all the equipment needed for a self catering holiday. The owner responded within 10 minutes by email when we requested a second key card. It arrived at our apartment within the hour. We were extremely pleased with the level of service we received from the owner. I would definitely recommend this property.

Great apartment but not ideal for self catering

Good resort for a relaxing break with all facilities on the doorstep. It is possible to upgrade to all-inclusive for a few, which may be advisable. However, the apartment wasn't great for a self catering holiday. Simple things like a tea towel, washing up liquid, salt, pepper etc would have made the stay a lot easier to do self catering. Otherwise a great apartment- clean, tidy, comfortable and a lovely roof terrace and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

Perfect Location

I stayed at Sol Dunas resort for a week in mid March with my husband and 9 year old son. The apartment was a good size, comfortable, very clean and in a perfect location overlooking one of the pools. It was fairly central on the resort but far enough away from the main area that we had a peaceful sleep every night. The staff were extremely friendly and accommodating and there were plenty of choice with regards to onsite restaurants, pool bars, pools etc. For my son the added bonus was a small water park and only a short walk to the beach where there was a beach bar selling drinks only. My only criticism was that the all inclusive, which we paid for one day mid way through our holiday was expensive at 162.50€ for 2 adults and 1 child but if you eat and drink a lot then maybe it would be worth doing and is good to have the option. Also, the supermarkets are very limited so if you visit Sal make sure you don't forget any toiletries. Roy was extremely helpful and responded to our emails almost immediately. All in all we had a lovely relaxing holiday and will definitely return.

Great apartment, hotel, island and owner

I choose this apartment after reviewing the hotel and the other review for this particular apartment. My family and I like 5 star hotels but don't like to pay full price. We also are not big fans of "all-inclusive" places because it seems to encourage us to eat/drink more than we should and the quality is never the best. This apartment allowed us to enjoy the amenities of a 5 star hotel, while not paying the all-inclusive price. This was our first experience with VRBO and it could not have been any better. Roy, the owner, was quick to get back with me on the MANY questions I had. I asked about not only the apartment, but the hotel, the town and pick at the Airport. He never seemed too busy to answer and explain. Roy fixed us up with an airport pick by Ildo who was fabulous - he took us shopping, helped us pick-out fish at the fish market, and drove us into town when needed. He did go on vacation to his home island while we we're there, but set us up with another driver, Marlino, who was also great. The apartment was perfect for a family of four. The location was great, the kitchen was well equipped and two bedrooms, bathrooms and televisions allowed everyone in our family to enjoy time together and apart, when needed. (Note: Other VRBO Dunas rentals are smaller)We loved the terrace above the apartment, but would have liked two lounge chairs instead of regular chairs.(Just an idea to make a super place, even better) As the other reviewer stated, most of the other rooms had stairs to access the roof terrace, but had signs that they were not allowed to. My husband and I love to cook, so an apartment with a kitchen was perfect. Although I did not find the supermarket as expensive as the other reviewer, be prepared to pay more food than you would at home. (Thanks to the other reviewer, we did make a point of loading a suitcase with food staples, which helped save money.) Fresh fish on the pier, though, was really cheap and made the experience of buy/cooking locally a wonderful addition to our trip. Eating out was also great. You can spend a lot - €165 one night, but we had wine, lobster, a raw fish plate and deserts or cheap - one afternoon, near the pier, we had thick, fresh tuna cooked on the grill and beer for less than €30. The hotel was great. We enjoyed the size, the pools, the nightly entertainment and the beach. I could go on and on. Thank you Roy, Ildo, Marlino and VRBO for a get two weeks. We hope to be back the year after next.

This apartment is one of the best on Dunas - its quiet yet near reception and the amenities. It over looks the nicest pool at Dunas and has views to the East at Kite beach and also to the west at Ponta Preta. Have a drink on the private roof terrace and watch the sun go down.

Qué hace que este alojamiento sea especial

The location and size of the apt and one of the few that has a private roof terrace make this apt something special. We have a local driver with a 4x4 with a/c who will meet you at the airport, arrange trips and even suggest restaurants for you - a really lovely guy.
