Why Jim Riordan chose Lucca
We have travelled all over the world as a family but Lucca is a special place to visit. It is authentic, cultured and a place to go to relax and chill out. We all love going there, even our dog Riley!

A Delightful Stay in Lucca
We were very happy with our stay in Lucca. The apartment was exactly as described, comfortable, and conveniently located within the town. We were also thankful for the A/C during a very hot week.
The apartment is spacious, with 3 bedrooms on the lower floor and the MBR on the upper, laid out in a way that affords some privacy if there is a mix of families or different age groups. The terrace is lovely, with beautiful views (and convenient retractable awning).
Lucca is very walkable, with most streets closed to ordinary traffic. The walk around the town walls is lovely and unique, a wide path lined with trees. We enjoyed strolling down Via Fillunga and exploring small side streets. Piazza dell’Anfiteatro is great for restaurants and people-watching, but there are many other charming piazzas offering places to stop for a caffe’, an aperitivo, or a meal. Aside from one very hot afternoon when we opted for lunch in the air-conditioned apartment, we never ate indoors. There are a couple of nice food shops near the apartment and caffes where one can enjoy a morning cappuccino and pastry. And there’s no shortage of restaurants!
Many people use bicycles to get around. We preferred to walk, but it would have been easy to rent bikes nearby. We also opted not to have a car, arriving from Florence by train. A side trip to Pisa by train took about 35 minutes.
A word on taxis in Lucca: we planned to get a taxi from the train station upon our arrival. There were none to be had, however, and the same was true of our departure from Lucca, when we tried to book one in advance. Evidently there is a serious shortage of taxis in the city. Fortunately it’s a fairly easy (about 20 minutes) walk from the station to the apartment.
We want to thank Cristiano, the apartment manager, who was a great help in many ways and responded quickly to any queries. We are very grateful for his assistance.
And many thanks also to Jim for offering such a delightful apartment!
Wonderful Lucca Apartment
Since my wife and I visited Italy four years ago we had a dream of spending an extended time there. We had visited Lucca on that trip and loved the Old Town area and the Tuscan region. We decided to make Lucca our home base for a 6 week stay. We spent hours on VRBO and other sites to find a place that met our needs. We wanted accommodations for 6 guests (so family could visit), 2 bathrooms, kitchen, dining seating for 6, outside space, affordability, and character. What a stroke of luck to find this beautiful property! From the original contact, the owner was responsive, helpful, and flexible. We found the apartment and town of Lucca to be as charming and interesting as we had hoped. Its location was perfect for our side trips by train, bus, and car to Pisa, Venice, Florence, Sienna, Montecatini Terme, Viareggio and others. The train and bus stations are about a 20-minute walk. There is a rental car agency about that same distance. After each trip we loved returning inside the walls of Lucca to the comfortable apartment. There are a seemingly limitless number of great restaurants in Lucca and we enjoyed finding our favorites. There are cafés, markets, and a pizzeria close by. Others have mentioned the stairs so I will too. There are about 50 stairs to the apartment. In our estimation that climb offset one gelato so that worked out well for us! That said, someone with mobility issues would have trouble with these. The mountain views off the back porch and out the bedroom window were ever changing and beautiful. We enjoyed watching a seagull chick grow up on the adjoining roof. The apartment was clean, comfortable, and well equipped. The kitchen had everything we needed and the washing machine was very helpful. At one point during our stay we had six in the apartment and it was perfect. The back porch was a great place for some Tuscan wine and cheese and was well used for that purpose. Lastly, we need to mention Cristiano. He is the property manager/neighbor and was so very helpful during our stay. He helped us to resolve some minor issues and make a cab reservation and always responded within minutes to our inquiries. He is a true gentleman and a great ambassador for Lucca and Italy. Thank you to the owner Jim for letting us spend some time in this special place. We have many wonderful memories and if we are ever fortunate enough to return to Lucca this would be our choice to stay.
Wonderful Apartment in Lucca
If you’re looking for a great place to stay inside the walls of Lucca, this is it! The accommodations were great and the service provided by the proper manager was outstanding. He was helpful and VERY responsive. The location is nicely located close to a couple cafes and grocery stores. The train station is within walking distance so visiting other cities in Tuscany is very convenient. The apartment is also a bit away from the hustle and bustle of the main business area of Lucca which keeps the evening hours peaceful. I would recommend this to anyway who wants to visit the area.
We stayed here for a week with 2 adult couples. I mainly chose this apartment due to the two separate double rooms and two bathrooms, plus the terrace looked really good! We were not disappointed! This place is bigger than it looks in the photos, the large kitchen and dining area for 10 is impressive. Although we didn't use the kitchen to cook, it was well stocked with pots and pans, plus a selection of oil, herbs etc etc if we did want to cook anything. There was soap and shampoo provided.
Cristiano was lovely, he contacted me mid week to check all was okay.
I could not recommend this place enough, even with 6 adults staying here there would be plenty of room for everyone. And it's only 50 stairs to the front door, not as bad as I've had at other places!
Large, comfortable and well equipped.
Six women, from both sides of the Equator, met in Lucca to celebtate four decades of friendship. The apartment suited us very well. Cool and quiet , it was the perfect place to come home to after day exploring. The Borgo area is lovely. Using the local shops, going for water at the fountain, even taking out the rubbish, made us feel like locals. Everything we needed was within 100 meters. Even climbing the stairs kept us fit; so we ate Tuscan food and drank the wine with no feelings of guilt !
September was a good time to be in Lucca. The weather was wonderful, hot and sunny and dry. Plenty going on in the city, including the Sante Croce procession and fireworks. Some great music, held in amazing venues are well worth seeking out. Walking the city streets, exploring the quieter areas was a joy.
Most of all, we will miss watching the sunsets, while sitting on the balcony, glass in hand.
Cristiano, with his twinkling smile, was always available, charming and helpful.
Thanks Jim,for renting us this lovelyl place.
This was the 3rd time I have stayed in this wonderful property. Everything was as great as ever. The apartment is very well equipped with all that we needed for a lovely holiday. Cristiano was very helpful again and gave us a warm welcome.
The terrace is the perfect place for Prosecco o'clock and the retractable awning was a great addition.
It was hard to say goodbye to Lucca.
Thank you, Jim and Cristiano
