The Flying Caballos Ranch was originally owned by the Alfred Madonna family in the early 1900's and encompassed several hundred acres, operating as a dairy farm. The Madonna's grew their own vegetables, vineyard, and orchard. They hunted deer and fished for salmon, all on the ranch. Currently, the ranch consists of approximately 100 acres with horse and cattle grazing, a year-round creek, and unobstructed views of Edna Valley and Islay Hill.

Our family get together for Neil & Shelby's proposal weekend was very memorable & sweet. The farmhouse property was perfect for the occasion and I will treasure the memories I have taken from it. Surely one of the nicest weekends of my life. It's true: Live, Laugh, and Love! (Amen) (Woohoo!)

Relaxing on the porch of the restored ranch house in San Luis Obispo

VRBO Bear stayed here

Mar 15, 2010

Why hibernate when you can escape to San Luis Obispo’s lush landscape for the winter? To escape my “cabin fever,” I decided to gather some friends and head to California’s Central Coast. The Flying Caballos Ranch House was perfectly suited for our weekend getaway. From the moment we ambled through the white picket fence, the bright yellow exterior greeted us like a burst of sunshine. The turn-of-the-century ranch house was enchanting while its modern appliances offered all the creature comforts. The architectural details, renovations, wall colors, furniture, and linens gave us the feeling of being transported back-in-time without getting stuck in a time warp. From bright and cheery to soft and dim, the room’s lighting options were adjustable creating a warm, glowing ambience akin to oil lamps. Each of the five bedrooms was fitted with crisp white linens under plush comforters. We were grateful that one room provided a toddler bed to keep our little one nearby. The home was casual in its décor, allowing us to truly kick our feet up and relax. Within minutes of arriving, we were all eager to get outside and explore. A lush green manicured lawn with plenty of seating and a beautiful view, offered a relaxing spot to linger and catch up. An outdoor grill complete with a large table for dining provided the perfect place to cook and socialize outdoors. Beyond the picket fence, we discovered a scenic natural landscape with tall willowy grasses, a covered bridge (reminiscent of those in Bridges of Madison County) and a pasture of horses. By ringing the large iron bell, you could signal the horses to come over and visit. A long leisurely walk led to the bottom of a hill with a hiking trail leading up. It was perfect for anyone desiring a physical challenge. Although there were many attractions in the surrounding towns, the desire to stay put and enjoy this comfortable home kept us on the property for most of our stay. It was the perfect opportunity to reconnect! The VRBO Bear

Beautiful Venue, Incredible Staff!

  • 5 of 5

We rented this property for our annual holiday party and, despite inclement weather, we had a wonderful time. Not only is the property located in a beautiful and private setting, Sarah and Tori are two of the most helpful and attentive staffers we could have wished for! At every step of the way, they were there to help out and really made the difference in our event going well. Thanks to you both!

Bachelorette Party Weekend Get-Away

  • 5 of 5

A group of 12 of us stayed here for my sister's bachelorette weekend and we were all completely taken away by the charming farmhouse. The entire house was stocked with the necessities (besides actual food, of course, but it is conveniently located near grocery stores). We loved the huge yard with the breathtaking views. We spent most of our weekend bar-b-queing, hanging out by the fire-pit, hot tubbing, dancing and sun-bathing. At night, the tree lights made the entire farmhouse look so magical. Everything about this place was picture-worthy.

It was also a huge plus that the farmhouse was pet friendly. Parking was easy, location was convenient, and Sarah was a joy to work with. She was quick in responding to emails and meeting her for the check-in was a breeze. I would definitely come back and would highly recommend the farmhouse to large parties.

Magical Farmhouse

  • 5 of 5

I had the opportunity to stay at the Flying Caballos Ranch Labor Day weekend 2015. The whole wedding party was so delighted that we got to stay together for four days sharing meals in the bitchin kitchen and working together preparing for the Big Day. Family stayed in the Farmhouse as well as the Guest House and Cottage. We enjoyed how the 1950's retro-farmhouse theme spilled over into the rehearsal dinner BBQ we had outside under the amazing trees that were all lit up with globes from "back in the day". If you had brought your dancing shoes the built-in dance floor was ready for you.

I can't say enough about Sarah, the Property Manager/Event Co-ordinator. She was so helpful to all of us. She had the uncanny knack of anticipating our needs and met them all. I've never seen anyone run around and get so much done. She's not only efficient and professional, she has a good sense of humor and we love her sunny disposition. Weddings can be stressful for sure, but she had us laughing and saw to it that the whole day went smoothly.

The huge trees, old out-buildings and rolling hills made for lovely backgrounds for the photographer. Everywhere you look you would see amazing photo opportunities. I think the fire pit was one of my favorite areas of the property for gathering, toasting, making s'mores and keeping the party going. I was surprised how many family members thought to bring a swim suit.....the hot tub got lots of use after a long day of setting up for the wedding.

I will say this; when the sun starts to go down the ambient light around the farmhouse was breathtaking. We have spectacular photographs of one of the most special days ever. When family gets together we reminisce and have already started making plans for a reunion back at the Ranch.

Amazing weekend!

  • 5 of 5

My DIL found this beautiful farmhouse for a family weekend. My daughters boyfriend was proposing and wanted us to share in a celebration weekend in SLO. We initially wanted a beach house but couldn't find much for a large family group. It was a magical place. We enjoyed every minute. We could make our own food and also bring in their favorites like Splash clam chowder. We had two babies in our group and it was so nice for them to play and run around. Fenced yard helped so much. Everything in the farmhouse is vintage and unique, so many exquisite little touches. The linens and beds were so comfy. The house was clean and well stocked. The fire pit was especially nice in November.

Sarah was pleasant and easy to work with.

We all loved it and my daughter and her fiancé loved it so much they have recently booked it for their wedding reception venue!

Amazing weekend getaway and perfect spot for a wedding!

  • 5 of 5

This past summer I was lucky enough to be a bridesmaid in a wedding held at this very special ranch. The spaciousness of the property, combined with the three separate accommodations made it not only an incredible space to host the wedding of my dear friends, but also the perfect setting for an unforgettable weekend for family and close friends to celebrate, enjoy each others company and stay comfortably all together in a beautiful location.

Between the outdoor grill, the hot tub and plenty of space for lawn games, our group spent most of our time outdoors enjoying the perfect SLO weather. The scenic setting of this ranch makes practically impossible to not to relax. The guesthouse and cottage, where family of the bride and groom stayed, were very nicely decorated and had everything you need for a comfortable weekend stay.

I personally stayed in the main farmhouse with the bride and the rest of the bridal party. The warm and inviting layout of the home was ideal for preparing and having meals together, finishing up last minute wedding crafts and relaxing with the bride-to-be. The day of the wedding we had plenty of space to get all of us ready with hair stylists, makeup artists and photographers in tow. The bright colors and beautiful furniture of the rooms made for great pre-wedding photos.

The wedding itself was magical and the property is laid out in such a way that each portion of the event had its own special location. From cocktail-hour near the farmhouse entrance, the ceremony in a scenic field overlooking the valley, a wonderful dinner in the backyard lit with strings of bulb lights and of course the dance floor…that was full as soon as the music started! One of my favorite things was the fire pit, which made for a cozy setting to catch up with friends and take in the beauty of the whole night.

Overall, I couldn’t have had a better time at Flying Caballos Ranch and can’t wait to return. Members of the bridal party and I are already talking about renting the property for a long weekend so we can take advantage of the nearby wine tasting. I would highly recommend this property to anyone planning a wedding, reunion or even just time away with friends or family. It truly is a unique place where everyone can come together to create lasting memories in a beautiful setting.

Great Family Spot

  • 5 of 5

My family (of 20) just held a family reunion/Cal Poly tour weekend and stayed at the Flying Caballos. We rented the cottage, the guesthouse, and the farmhouse. The house slept our party of 20 perfectly with just enough privacy (though some of our small ones were on pull out beds). The setting is beautiful, the fire pit made for great conversation and star gazing, and the deck/dance floor let everyone cut loose. If you have a large family event in San Luis Obispo, I highly recommend this property.
