The word "Eureka"became an indelible part of the history of Australian democracy when gold miners revolted against petty officialdom at the Eureka Stockade in the Victorian goldfields in 1854.

"Eureka "'has long been associated with gold.Derived from a Greek word meaning "I have found it" it was made famous when uttered by Archimedes at the time he discovered a means of measuring the density and thus the purity of gold.In more recent times it has become the exclamation of prospectors lucky enough to strike it rich.

In our "Eureka"we have found the perfect mountain home away from home.We hope you find our home that way as well.

About John and Catherine McIntyre

The owners of Eureka are John and Catherine Mcintyre. We are Australians who live in Thredbo ,a small ski village in the Snowy Mountains.Yes it does snow in Australia!

We owned a boutique property management company that looked after 5 star ski chalets for 12 years so we are well aware of what makes a great holiday.

we had been visiting Telluride for more than 15 years before we found the perfect second home.

John and Catherine McIntyre purchased this house in 2008

Why John and Catherine McIntyre chose Telluride

Telluride is truly one of the most beautiful places on earth. It is also a fabulous place to ski and to vacation. We have travelled extensively both summer and winter to many destinations around the world and Telluride was the only place outside Australia that really feels like home to us.

What makes this house unique

Eureka is not a vacation rental property ,it is a home.

Our aim is to let our guests experience the same level of relaxation and enjoyment that we experience every time we visit.

Guestbook comments from the owner

some great home cooked meals made easy with a fabulous kitchen.

beds were oh so comfortable.

enjoyed the gondola, wildlife, restaurants, shopping and fly fishing.

Amazing views from the window seat of this great Telluride mountain home

VRBO Bear stayed here

May 27, 2010

The owners of the Eureka house at Mountain Village in Telluride, Colorado were kind and welcoming hosts during my visit to Telluride. Now I’m no superstar like Tom Cruise, Oprah, or some of the other Telluride locals but I can see why the celebrities love Telluride! It’s a small town full of friendly people from superstars to everyday folks who just want to get away in the mountains. Everyone seems to know each other and they make you feel like this is where you belong. The Eureka house itself is a luxury home with everything you can think of. The cedar beams, stone hearths and wood floors make a mountain bear feel right at home. And beneath this Tyrollean lodge styled architecture are all the amenities to pamper a bear like me. It has a steam shower, jetted tubs, KitchenAid appliances, and radiant floor heat! If you need to adjust your bindings there is a work station in the large garage with tools to help you out. When I’m done skiing the mountain I can ride right down to the Eureka house, leave my boots in the mudroom and sit in the hot tub! From there on the top deck I can see most of the San Juan Mountain Range with jagged peaks and icy ridges. Then I can fall asleep in one of the master suites while snow falls outside the window and a fire burns in the hearth. Telluride is surrounded by rugged 14,000 foot peaks. The people here call it “Little Switzerland” because it looks like the Alps – ahh, my kind of place! From town you can see Bridal Veil Falls, one of the highest waterfalls in the United States. Telluride Ski Resort boasts some of the best skiing and snowboarding in the world. The lifts and gondola connect Mountain Village and downtown Telluride so that you can practically travel around town on your skis. The Eureka house is just a five minute walk to Mountain Village where a quaint pedestrian hamlet has been built. It’s a little town of its own with shopping, fine dining, burger joints, parks, spas and more. It even has a grocery store. Or you can jump on the gondola that takes you right into downtown Telluride just a few minutes away. There are festivals in almost all seasons in the town of Telluride and Mountain Village. In the summer there is a festival almost every weekend! So whether you’re a celebrity or just an average Joe looking for a mountain retreat, the Eureka house will make your stay perfect! This was our 3rd time to Eureka & we WILL be back!

  • 5 of 5

Our first visit to Telluride and Eureka was in 2012. We have since returned in 2015 and now in 2018 and are already planning our next trip. We are from Sydney Australia and have stayed here with different friends on each trip.

Everyone has loved it as much as we do. Having different wings of the house, all with ensuites has made it perfect when holidaying with groups, couples and families. The upstairs games room and theatre room as well as the huge living, dining, kitchen area is fantastic for entertaining as well as having lots of places to get away from it all and read a book or watch a movie. The kitchen is fully equipped with everything anyone could want, from appliances to a stocked fridge and pantry with all the basic condiments, sugar, milk, flour etc and lots of other extras. I love that We even found crackers and tortilla chips, etc and whatever we used we just replaced. It’s a great system and makes it feel like home. My favourite nook in the house is the beautiful window box where you can just gaze over the mountains and watch the sunset after a big day skiing. The jacuzzi and steam room are also fantastic! To be able to sit on the snow covered balcony in the a Jacuzzi and be toasty warm with a beer or wine in hand is the ultimate recovery. The home is styled and furnished superbly and the two fire places are very simple to use, creates an amazing ambiance as well as being safe for little ones. It is a short stroll to the end of the street to clip in and ride to the bottom of the mountain or to mountain village gondola and grocery store. Dial a ride is the best invention ever and so easy to use so we did not need a car the entire 2 weeks we were there. We will be back for sure.

I stayed for 10 days in Eureka and what a fantastic place it is, watching the sun coming up in the window and then straight out of the garage on to the slopes! I can recommend anyone to stay at this house, it's great!!!

Wonderful family ski home

  • 5 of 5

Eureka Telluride was a perfect location for our ski holiday with ski in ski out access and a beautifully appointed home. The extras provided including the toboggans for the kids to slide out of the front of the house, the hot tub for the soaking the tired skiing muscles, reading books, pool table, secluded retreat in the lift for adults and children alike, made the vacation truly special. Thank you to the hosts for their attention to detail, their special welcome, the pantry which had just that spice you were looking for to prepare dinner, the dvd collection for that movie at night, the music player and CD's which perfectly set the mood.

Above all thank you for sharing your home and also for having the most wonderful window seat in the world to view the spectacular sunrises and sunsets over the San Sophia mountains.

What a beautiful home with incredible views in Mountain Village. We were at the Blues and Brews festival in Telluride and we could not have been happier with both the house and the event.

Breathtaking views & a gorgeous home!

  • 5 of 5

We were a group of three 50+ couples & one late 20's couple with a one year old. We were in Telluride for my son's wedding on the San Sophia Overlook. This spotless house was a perfect fit for our group & the owners were very nice & super helpful. The bedrooms with their own bathrooms afforded convenience & privacy plus a quiet space for baby downstairs. The loft would be perfect for teens & tweens & baby loved it too. The furniture was lovely & very comfortable to relax or watch tv. Loved the window seat! Kitchen was well stocked & had everything we needed. We could all eat together at the huge dining room table. A short hike downhill brought us to the Town Hall Gondola & we either hiked back up or took the Concierge service back home. The nicest people ran that service as well & were there to pick us up almost before I hung up the phone. A simple request had them come with a car seat for the baby as well. We all fell in love with the gondolas & getting around was easy & fun. We enjoyed the hot tub especially with such gorgeous views. The guys got in some fly fishing & the girls got to shop at some very unique stores in Telluride & Mountain Village. We saw a herd of elk, plenty of deer & a black bear greeted us at Town Hall one evening. Come prepared for rainy weather & be amazed at how fast the sun can come back out. Overall, a once-in-in-a-lifetime vacation I would recommend highly.

Wonderful home for a family gathering!

  • 5 of 5

Eureka provided a very comfortable home for us and our 3 adult children and their guest. The 4 bedrooms each with their own bathroom offered plenty of privacy and space without being overly large. We especially enjoyed the layout of the kitchen, dining and living areas as we could all be together in one space. The furnishings were very nice and the kitchen well outfitted. The window seat has an awesome view of the mountains. We also really enjoyed the hot tub which was easily accessed.

The lower level leading out to the garage was fantastic for getting geared up to hit the slopes and for storage of skis, boots, etc. We had varying levels of skiers in our group and the ski out is too difficult for beginners. Skiing home involves a 120 yard walk along the road or if you prefer the Dial-A-Ride service is great. We enjoyed the ability to walk to the Mountain Station (town hall) grocery store including the walk back uphill and the easy access to the gondola. For anyone considering bringing older grandparents as we were (but didn't) the driveway is steep and there are many steps up to the front door (we always used the garage door to enter). Dial-a-Ride and airport shuttles picked up and dropped off at the top of driveway.

We will definitely consider staying here again!

Owner's Response: We appreciate your time to review your stay. When we purchased the home we installed a handrail along the driveway to help walk up and down in winter conditions. Thankfully it is also quite short.
