Cozy Lake Superior Cabin & Beach Cabana/Sauna

Bedrooms Studio
Property type cabin
Minimum Stay 3 nights

About the property

Cabin, Studio, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 4)

Cozy efficiency cabin and beach cabana with a wood burning sauna stove. Wood is provided. We are the fourth driveway on a private road. It offers a lot of privacy. Wild blueberries and strawberries on and adjacent to property. We have 10 acres of land and 170 feet of frontage on Lake Superior with a wide sand and rock beach. It is ideal for rock hounds. Adjacent to the Michigan Nature Association 241 acre Black Creek Nature Sanctuary.

Fully equipped kitchen with a refrigerator, dishwasher, electric stove, two microwaves and dishes, silverware pots and pans. Located on the west side of Copper Island, you never miss a sunset here. Our cabin sleeps 4 on a handmade cedar post doublebed, with a new pillowtop mattress in 2010, and a new hide-a-bed couch in 2011. Our 39 grandkids love it here.

The sauna and deck are built with cedar logs from our property. From the top bench you can see a unique panorama of the beach through the windows. In 2010 we installed a new wood fired sauna stove. The sauna takes the chill off after a dip into the waters of the world's largest fresh water lake, Lake Superior. The beach cabana is ideal for a beachside picnic. The cabana has a couch, table and chairs and counter tops, a sink and running water. We have a sand volleyball court. All paved roads to get here with a gravel driveway.

About The Owner

Bob is Michigan Tech graduate he is retired. He worked for 18 years as a Michigan Tech finance administrator,he also worked as the Internal Audior at the White Pine Mine, Controller of a family business in Minnestoa and as a Edward Jones Investment Rep. Current he is a lay pastor at a Lutheran Church in Phoenix, AZ. Kathy is a retired math teacher. We have six kids and 39 grandkids. Bob's Dad was born in 1903 and grew up on Bumbletown Hill 6 miles from Cedar Bay where his grandparents move in 1900. Somebody in the family has owned lakefront protery at Cedar Bay since 1958 family roots go back a long way.

The Owner purchased this cabin in 1979

Why The Owner chose Upper Peninsula

I purchase the property hoping to build a home here, I was an administrator at Michigan Tech for over 18 years. In 1993 I, a 45 year old bachelor, married a widow with 6 kids and moved to Minnesota. We built the cabin as a guest house for our kids hoping someday to retire here and build a passive solar home in the hole on the southfacing hillside. Instead we retired in Sun City, Arizona and I became a pastor at a church there. Therefore, unable to spend 6 months here as we did for a few years we now rent it on VRBO when we are not here.

What makes this cabin unique

We enjoy going sauna and swimming with our 39 grandkids and other kids that come to visit us. Making s'mores on a campfire on the beach for the kids while we watch the sunset and the stars come out. Hikes on the nature trails are always fun.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We loved Cabo so much last year that we are thinking of returning! The accommodations last year were wonderful…my wife and kids loved it.

Best of beach and woods! Intimate, wooded, yet still water views from the cabin . The beach cabana with rooftop deck offers amazing views and everything you could want to hang out on the beach no matter what the season. The sauna experience was wonderful and gave us a new appreciation for "up north" living.. The pride the owners take in this little paradise is evident everywhere and we are grateful they feel called to share it with others. A wonderfully healing place. :)

Owner's Response: Thank you for your kind words. God has blessed us with this property. We cannot be there all the time and the renters help us pay to maintain the property. Your positive comments bring us great joy that others can experience life on the shores of Lake Superior. Praise God for that. Owners Bob and Kathy

Peaceful and Beautiful

  • 5 of 5

This cabin is cozy and secluded but still close enough to town. Although small, it has everything you'd need and plenty of room for a couple with a child like us. The cabana, sauna and beach were where we spent our time during the sunny days. One day it was in the 70's so we brought our son's pack n play down to the cabana and once he took a nap we took a sauna and jumped in the ice cold gichi-gami! We felt amazing and revitalized after! The cabin is very close to the Black Creek trail. The terrain was easy enough for our 19 month old to scale (however quite long we didn't complete the entire trail). We collected neat looking rocks along the beach right in front of the cabana/sauna. We found the entire property very inviting and it truly felt like home away from home. We will most definitely be back next year! Hopefully we can get it during the warmer summer months next time so that we can enjoy the beach more.

Quiet and romantic getaway

  • 5 of 5

We had such a wonderful time in your cozy cabin. We were so happy upon arrival with it's quaint and warm features. We saw the Aurora Borealis on the first night there while sitting out in the cabana and we saw a small snake on the path up to the house. We took the Black Creek hike close by the house the next day which was easy and beautiful. We drove up to Copper Harbor and had dinner at the Harbor Haus and took a walk around the area. We drove to Peterson's Fish Market and bought some lake trout both fresh and smoked and had a cook out. We collected many heart shaped rocks along the deserted beach. We used the nice and hot sauna then took a cold swim in the lake. We read, relaxed, enjoyed and laughed together for three days. We did not want to leave! We are so glad we found you. After being in downtown Chicago for a weekend wedding, your tranquil cabin was what we needed. Thank you for having such a special place for vacationers. We hope to come back one day.

Fell in love with the Keweenaw in this fall

  • 5 of 5

I found this peaceful, beautiful location by chance--I'm an old Finn who was looking for a place in the UP to stop for a sauna, along my Lake Superior travel-way. I'd never been to the Keweenaw--

and, overnight I fell head-over-heels. Fall (mid-Oct) was gorgeous--leaf change; quiet/few

others on the roads--perfect time to enjoy the sauna! From this truly cozy cabin, I was able

to see much of the Keweenaw by car--next time, I will allow a lot more time for hiking, quiet

time, and all the goodness of this part of the world.

This location is a nature lover's delight!
