Overview

About the property

Condo on Sandy Beach, 2 Bedrooms, 2 Baths (Sleeps 2-4)

Looking for a spacious 2 bedroom unit with a sublime ocean view that's only 120 feet from the shoreline of a sandy beach? Look no further. Mort's Port awaits your arrival.

We welcome inquiries at any time, but only commit to a reservation one year or less prior to arrival date for first-time rentals. The minimum rental requirement generally is 7 nights (an exception being 6 nights in May). The shortest stay in the first three months of the year is 14 nights unless there is a 7-13 night opening between rentals.

If you decide to stay in Mort's Port, this is what we can predict: You won't want to leave. Treat yourself to a stay in this superb third floor unit in Kanai A Nalu, and you'll understand. The wall-to-wall glass that separates the living area from the lanai presents an astounding and expansive ocean view. The gentle trade winds, the swaying palms, and the sound of the waves will enchant you. If you have ever stayed in the more tourist-populated parts of the island, you will appreciate the relative seclusion and quiet nature of Maalaea.

Within walking distance are the shops and oceanview restaurants at Maalaea Harbor. You'll also find boats departing for snorkeling, diving, and whale watching adventures. Also nearby is the Maui Ocean Center, as impressive an aquarium as you'll find anywhere.

If you want to get in the water, you can go down to the sandy beach below the courtyard to swim, snorkel, or have fun with a boogie board. Of course, there is always the option to take a dip in the gated pool located in the center of the courtyard.

If you want to take a scenic walk (or run) along the shoreline, you can go for miles on Sugar Beach, which has just two oceanfront condo buildings beyond ours to the east. Then you're on a vast stretch of sand alongside the Kealia nature preserve, an area that will never be developed.

The condo complex is well constructed (concrete walls and ceilings) and well maintained. Our two bedrooms are real rooms with real doors, not lofts and not sliding screens. If you like your privacy, you will like staying in Mort's Port.

What you see when you walk in the front door (assuming the blinds have been rolled up) is breath-taking. Unlike the majority of oceanview units in our building that are on an angle and present a view of other units across the way, our straight-out view is your visual treat from almost anywhere inside, even the kitchen. While cooking you can look through the living and dining areas and see the ocean's swath of blue. You'll never forget that you are in Hawaii with this beautiful panorama.

When you can pry your eyes from the awesome views of the ocean and Mt. Haleakala (a dormant volcano), you'll notice that the grounds are so well landscaped and manicured that you might think you're in a botanical garden. Even the swimming pool is a visual delight with its tropical-flower-adorned waterfall continuously spilling fresh water down one side.

Just as impressive as what you see outside is what you will find inside the condo. The unit is tastefully decorated, featuring rattan living and dining furniture from the Kauai Collection. Throughout, you will find Hawaiian-themed artwork, mostly by local artists. Décor includes wood carvings, raku pottery, and prints of scenic paintings. (There are also several original-by-owner-Sue watercolors).

You will rejoice at your selection of this condo unit if any of the following are important to you: FAST, FREE and PASSWORD-PROTECTED WIFI , HD FLATSCREEN TVs with CABLE AND DVD PLAYERS, CD's and DVD's in the unit, MINI-STEREO SYSTEM, LENDING LIBRARY (no late fees ever), PORTABLE PHONE with FREE LONG DISTANCE (U.S. and Canada), A/C, IN-UNIT SAFE, SNORKELING EQUIPMENT, BOOGIE BOARDS, BEACH CHAIRS and UMBRELLAS, SPOTTING SCOPE and BINOC's, WASHER/DRYER in unit, KINGSIZE BED in MBR, and TWIN BEDS (King option) in 2nd BR.

Maybe not important to you now, but wait until you have settled into one of our two CUSHIONED RECLINER LOUNGE CHAIRS (both facing the TV, and one also facing the ocean). You may also find that our four CUSHIONED DINING CHAIRS ON WHEELS are more comfortable and fun to move around on than what you expected.

Recent upgrades: A NEW KEYLESS ENTRY system that makes arriving and leaving less challenging. BEAUTIFUL MAPLE CABINETS and PUCK LIGHTING in the kitchen, NEW WASHER/DRYER, and NEW CARPETING. Also, NEW MASTER BEDROOM FURNITURE (but no new headboard--we're too fond of the hand-painted one you see in the photo).

Most likely it's not what's inside that you're going to remember for a long time after you leave. Instead, it's probably going to be the incredible views from the lanai and the strolls you took along the shoreline. Imprinted in your mind will be the panoramic scene from the 3rd floor: the lush greenery and tropical flowers in the foreground, the beautiful blue waters of the bay in the middle, and the majestic Haleakala in the background. All that framed by randomly stretching palm trees to complete the picture.

At night, it's just as impressive. The lights twinkling from Kihei across the bay vie for your attention with the stars more bright and more plentiful than you can imagine. You'll see. You really won't want to leave.

About Sue Mortenson

Aloha. We are Mort and Sue, retired teachers who live near Chicago. Although we aren't able to come to Maui as often as we would like, every trip is filled with as much excitement as the cruise that introduced us to this marvelous island. Whenever we come to Mort's Port, we spend at least 50% of our time working to improve our home-away-from-home. We strive to make our unit feel as comfortable and look as appealing (in an island kind of way) as we possibly can.

Sue Mortenson purchased this condo in 1994

Why Sue Mortenson chose Central Maui

This centrally located condominium on Maalaea Bay is relatively quiet, unlike many vacation rentals in nearby towns that have constant traffic whizzing by. We like the building being all-concrete construction and the sandy beach being walkable for miles to the east. It's also nice to be so close to the harbor, restaurants, and shops. And in the winter months, we have a great vantage point for seeing whales frolicking in the bay.

What makes this condo unique

Ours is one of the 16 oceanview units that face straight out to the water, 12 of us above ground level. That means that we have a fantastic view of the ocean, not a view of another unit across the courtyard. Also, since these 12 units have more lanai space than those on an angle, we are able to provide a spacious table that can accommodate every guest with nobody having their back to the ocean. Another uniqueness is that our unit is one of the few to have installed an overhead lanai light for a low lumen alternative to candles.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We don't think we can find words that express how wonderful your condo, location, manicured grounds ... have been during our vacation here. [This is] a gem that is best described as paradise. We're already contemplating a future date for a return. Thank you and Aloha!

Perfect Spot for Whale Watching!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Mort's Port from March 1st - 15th 2017. Everything in the condo was as advertised and it was perfect for our group of 4. Let's start with the view, which is why I booked it in the first place. Bring your zoom lens and tripod. I took over 1200 photos on this trip, all but about 150 of them are of whales. I took most of the shots right from the 3rd floor lanai or from the shore line on the property. If you are going to Maui to see whales, stay here. The grounds are nicely landscaped and very well maintained. The pool is a decent size and is heated . The building also has a couple of elevators and a luggage cart making it super easy to move in and bring in supplies. We used the gas grills by the pool to cook dinner several times.

The condo was clean and is extremely well equipped. The kitchen included all the pots and pans you need to cook a gourmet meal. There was a great selection of spices in the cabinet, plastic containers, baggies, paper towels, silverware, plates, glass and plastic glasses. Basically everything you'll need for your stay. The real bonuses were all the other stuff, like beach chairs, beach umbrellas, snorkeling gear for 4, two coolers plus a giant Costco cooler bag, pool noodles, a spotting scope and a set of high quality binoculars, a mini stereo, flat screen TV's, comfy beds and furniture you can get comfortable on. The unit has a wall-mounted A/C in the living room which cools the entire unit, but also gets a good breeze, so we only used it on hot calm days/nights. The ceiling fans combined with the provided portable fans, worked great most of the time.

The location is just a few blocks away from the Maalaea harbor, where most of the whale watching boats depart. We took 3 whale watching trips and a snorkeling/whale watching trip to Molokini while we stayed there. Prices for these tours were very reasonable. The Pacific Whale Foundation parking lot is literally at the end of the short street the condo is on. There are a few restaurants and shops at the harbor, and the condo is a quick drive to Kihei, which has tons of good restaurants, shops, beach parks and a Safeway. It only takes about 15 minutes, on the best 4 lane divided highway on the island to get to Kahului where the airport, Costco and Walmart are all located. Lahaina is also only a short drive up the coast. We obviously loved staying at Mort's Port and when we come back to Maui, this is where we'll stay again. I'm really glad I found it.

Owner's Response: We are most grateful for the willingness of this reviewer to share his excitement about 'staying at Mort and seeing whales so often. He sent us several videos clips of the humpbacks cavorting in our bay, which made us a bit jealous since we don't usually stay at the condo during high season (which is also whale season). We have spotted whales in early Dec. and sometimes in April, but never so clearly from the lanai. Seeing humpbacks breaching was the bonus for this family. We welcome them back and encourage others to consider a stay at this retreat in paradise. Sue and Mort

It is ALL TRUE!

  • 5 of 5

Everything you read about Morts Port is true. The unit has everything you need to have a wonderful, relaxing vacation. We love the central location and the grounds and pool are maintained daily. The orchids growing on the trees add just a little extra touch.

We started coming for two weeks but soon realized that a month was even better.

The entire complex is nice, but Morts Port is #1 for us!

Owner's Response: We are extremely grateful to this couple for their loyalty in choosing our condo for their vacation rental four times in recent years. As we do with all renters, we have asked them what we could add or change to make a good experience even better. We have implemented several of their suggestions, including switching from a keyed to a coded entry system. Mahalo from Mort and Sue

Best Place I've Stayed on Maui!

  • 5 of 5

I've had the privilege of visiting Maui 8 times in my life, and I've always stayed in West Maui. While I enjoy West Maui, we wanted to try something different this time. Sue and Mort's condo was absolutely ideal in every way. Due to dietary needs, we need a full and well equipped kitchen, and we didn't lack anything. We were fully able to live in this condo for 9 nights. The property itself is well maintained, and there are ample lounge chairs to sit on right by the beach. Speaking of the beach, it's probably my favorite. You can swim directly in front of the complex, and if you want to go to a beach park, just head down the road on foot the equivalent of a couple of blocks, and you'll find yourself on a piece of beach not overwhelmed by tourists. To top it off, you can probably swim with turtles here (or just watch them from the beach). Additionally, from this location, you can go just about anywhere in a decent amount of time. We spent time in Lahaina, Kaanapali, Paia, Kihei, and Wailuku. We generally ventured out during the warmest part of each day, and spent time in the sun in the morning and later afternoon. The keyless entry system made coming and going so simple, and there is no condo key to lose!

We all have a choice about where to stay when planning a vacation, and I chose this condo for the reasons above, but equally important, I chose it because of the owners. Sue is incredibly responsive via email, and she gives very detailed instructions. She's a delight to work with, and the care that she and Mort have put into their Hawaii vacation home is unmatched. In addition to everything else I shared, we found that we didn't need to rent any water equipment. We have our own masks/snorkels, but all of that is there for you if you don't have it. You'll also find boogie boards, a cooler, beach chairs, and fins.

On our next trip to Maui, we'll be staying at Mort's Port if at all possible. There's really no reason for us to stay anywhere else! I have already referred multiple friends to Sue and Mort, and I will continue to do so.

Maui'nificent Stay

  • 5 of 5

We had an excellent stay in Maui at Kanai A Nalu condo, better known as 'Mort's Port', in a beautiful, peaceful location. The condo was clean, welcoming and had a great view overlooking the courtyard, ocean and pool. We were in a peaceful location far enough away from the tourist spots so no crowds, yet close enough to drive to the sights. The beach was close and we got to boogy board with turtles, snorkel and enjoy the waves. If you're looking for a quiet spot to enjoy Maui, the beach, a nice pool, friendly people and the ocean, then this is the place you'll want to stay.

Owner's Response: Such a clever title to this review! We are grateful to our recent guests for taking the time to describe what they appreciated about their stay at Mort's Port. When we stay at the condo, we also note that our fellow owners and those who are renting tend to be quite friendly--also, by and large, observant of the quiet hours guidelines. As we tell everyone whose expectations have been met or exceeded: Please come back! M and S

Mort's Port

  • 5 of 5

Such a wonderful property. Very comfortable and relaxing. Photos and descriptions are a true reflection of the condo. Easy access to the beach and spectacular views. Many amenities provided such as washer and dryer, fully equipped kitchen, beach chairs, boogie boards, etc. The location is easy to find and within walking distance to many shops and restaurants. If you want to venture to the larger cities like Lahaina or Kihei, Maalaea is centrally located between the two and only 15 minutes from the airport. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here and if we are ever fortunate enough to visit the beautiful island of Maui again, this will be our first choice for our home away from home.

Owner's Response: We're glad that this reviewer mentioned the authenticity of the photos and description of Mort's Port in our VRBO listing. We never use special lenses on our cameras to exaggerate the size or layout of our unit, and we try to keep the write-up as accurate as possible regarding the furnishings, appliances, beach equipment, etc. It's very important to us that what you see (or read) is what you get. Mahalo from Sue (who took most of the photos--we have camera wars). Mahalo also from Mort (who took the footprints-in-the-sand-at-sunrise photo).

Wonderful!

  • 5 of 5

Great location! We could drive anywhere in less than a half hour. Very comfortable accommodations. Lovely property and grounds. I loved listening to the waves at night and enjoyed sitting on the lanai watching the sun rise. Sue is a great communicator and has thought of everything. If I go to Maui again I will definitely want to stay here again! Soooo much better than staying in a hotel!

Owner's Response: Reading this review was a fantastic first-thing-in-the-morning experience on our first-time-this-year trip to Maui. It's what I would have written if owners were allowed to review their own stays in the condo. (The line about being a great communicator who has thought of everything, though, would probably sound a bit immodest.) Mahalo, and do return! Sue

Map

Many people enjoy taking a daily stroll along the shoreline of Maalaea Bay. The sandy beach begins at our condo complex and extends east all the way to Kihei (approx. 4 miles). The 7 condo buildings to our west are not on a sandy beach, but there is a sidewalk by the road that people staying in those condos can take get to a starting point for their shoreline walking. Most of the time Maalaea Bay is calm enough for swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, and boogie- or paddle--boarding.
