Nice, quaint, and quiet location. Beautiful pond and wildlife. Cottage is three floors with bedroom on the bottom floor and living room on the third floor.
Penelope and Pete were the most welcoming and accomodating hosts. The property was so picturesque! Swimming, kayaking and fishing all in our backyard! It was so hard to leave, we can't wait to go back!
We were looking for a low key friends weekend, a place to hang out by the fire and relax. Penny and Pete’s place was perfect! Clean and cozy, they provided all the amenities one would need (charcoal for grill, wood for fire, bottles of water, towels, etc) overall a great stay!
I loved this place! It was adorable, perfect little getaway for 2. They had kayaks there for us to go around the pond. Crystal clear water. Nice, friendly people. Definitely recommended!
This is a gorgeous small guest house great for a relaxing weekend or a place to crash after local hiking or other activities. The property owners were responsive and wonderful to work with. There is an outside hearth which you can use on request which is just GORGEOUS! The water has a bit of local flavor, so if you are picky bring a galleon of drinking water. Absolutely amazing stay!!
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here! There was plenty of room for a family of four. Access to the lake was right at our back door. We enjoyed the dock and the kayaks. The owners are also very nice! Our daughter was sick on one of our days here and they offered to drive into town for us to get her medicine if needed. We lost one day of sightseeing because of her sick day, but we were able to keep ourselves and our other child entertained on the lake. Would definitely stay here again!
We arrived after dark and when we arrived we were greeted by twinkling lights and dancing torches. The whole pond was sprinkled with similar decor. We squeezed in a morning kayak and mile long walks. So beautiful and happy. Hosts were gregarious and all the towns were twenty minutes away that offered fine dining and shopping. Purchased lots of Lilly Pulitzer, antiques and stopped for ice cream too. A perfect holiday weekend.
We loved being here, it was quiet and the perfect weekend away for us to celebrate my husbands birthday. We brought food to cook breakfast and lunch at the cabin, and were able to cook just fine with the kitchen amenities provided. We easily traveled to Portland and neighboring cities for dinner after a day of fishing, kayaking and relaxing. It is good to note as another review stated that the cabin is right next door to the owners and other cabins on the pond, super easy check in and friendly hosts. If you’re looking for total isolation this might not be the spot! The cabin is also a split level style, you walk into the main level with kitchen and bath, upstairs is a second bedroom and living space and downstairs is the main bedroom which was helpful during the summer since it stayed nice and cool without air conditioning.
Great stay! The cabin was cute and clean. We were very comfortable. The hosts were welcoming and a joy to talk to. We highly recommend and are looking forward to booking again in the future.
Pros: Lovely relaxing property. Two adult couples traveled together. The kitchen was well equipped and there were two distinct outside spaces for relaxation. The pond was fun for fishing, kayaking and swimming. Close to many things, but felt like you were in the middle of nowhere. Highly recommend.Cons: We did not take issue with anything, but just for others planning purposes, you have to drive down a long dirt road to access the property. It is not a publicly maintained road, so it was quite bumpy. We had no trouble navigating it in a truck but could be challenging with a small car. Also, the upstairs bed is a trundle bed that converts into a larger bed.
Peaceful Pondside Retreat – A Perfect Maine Getaway
We had a wonderfully relaxing stay at this peaceful cottage on the pond. As a family of three, it was exactly what we were looking for—quiet, scenic, and comfortable. We especially loved having access to the kayaks and paddleboards, which we used daily to explore the serene pond and fish for bass. Hearing the loon calls in the evening was such a beautiful touch of Maine nature. The house had everything we needed for a comfortable stay, and the hosts were very kind and welcoming. We really appreciated the firepit and ended up using it every night—it was the perfect way to wind down after a day on the water. The only suggestion we'd make is to add a shade in the upstairs bedroom/living room to block the morning light. The cottage is slightly off the beaten path, which we loved—it’s about 20 minutes to most stores and restaurants, so be prepared for a bit of a drive. But the peaceful setting more than makes up for it.Overall, it's a lovely spot in a peaceful area of Maine, and we’d absolutely return. Highly recommend for anyone looking to unwind and enjoy the outdoors!
The property location was wonderful, with a beautiful clear pond just steps away from our cottage. A brand new pier overlooking the pond and a floating deck were wonderful amenities and we enjoyed spending time on the waterfront. I enjoyed using the kayak, and saw a loon playing close up. Pete & Penny were friendly and helpful hosts. I had messed up my schedule and arrived a day early. When I messaged Penny of my ETA, she informed me that my booking wasn't until the next day. No worries though, the cottage was available and they allowed us to add the extra day on the spot. The cottage was awkward. There is a reason why the listing does not talk much about it. There are three floors. When you walk in, the kitchen is on the left and bathroom on the right. Directly to the right of the entry and the bathroom are stairs going down to the bedroom. The bathroom was a "walk-through" with bi-fold louvered doors on either end, so privacy was not ideal. To get to the upstairs room you had to walk through either the kitchen or the bathroom to get to the second set of stairs that went to the upstairs room which was spacious, but the day bed & futon were not particularly comfortable. The shower curtain could have been cleaner. There was a slight musty smell in the downstairs bedroom. The kitchen was clean and well-appointed. I would suggest adding a couple more small shelves, and a paper towel holder above the sink to create meal prep space.Overall a fair deal for the price.
The property was not entirely accurate to the description. The hosts were nice but omitted that they lived on site, the dock is not attached or private to the cabin, while it looks that way in the pictures and description. While the hosts stated I would have access to their dock, it was a bit uncomfortable using as they would be around the dock every time I would try and utilize this space. The bottom bedroom space where I stayed smelled of mold, and upon the first night I discovered a water leak that I was able to catch in video while my husband showered. Though Pete was kind, I did find it a bit strange that he made his whereabouts very known every time I exited the cabin. I did not see any security features in the cabin, though I did do a thorough sweep, the only WiFi available was from their 2 “available” WiFi hosts. I booked for 2 adults, while it sleeps 4, I did end up bringing my mother in law as well, and within an hour of arrival I received an updated “estimate” from the hosts that they tried to charge for my mother in law, although it sleeps four people. I will say that I had a great experience with Vrbo the site itself.
We loved our stay with the Barker’s Pond area. We were able to see the nearby beaches including Mother’s and Pine Point, and enjoyed Lobster at Ray’s and Clam Shack. Our daughter lost an earring down a drain and the owner was kind enough to retrieve it from the sink trap. Awesome lake to kayak and wonderful campfire at night. Will be back
We had a lovely weekend stay on Barkers Pond. Pete and Penelope are gracious hosts. We appreciated the coffee cream, sparkling water and toiletries. The Pond is very peaceful and I enjoyed sitting on the patio in the morning. The cottage is very cozy; good size for a couple. Bathroom has two sinks which is nice; bathroom privacy is limited due to louvered folding doors. Nice quiet location. Thank you for hosting us.
Great rustic cabin to stay at on a pond, the pond is a lot bigger than we anticipated! The hosts are great, they greated us and gave us a tour of the property.
Check-in process easy, cabin small but fit two people nicely. 3 floors in a small space, so there were always stairs to negotiate--not a problem for us, but may be for some. Comfy bed, nice bedding and pillows. Owner gave us a restaurant recommendation (Ken's) that garnered an outstanding seafood meal. Don't miss the lobster rolls!
My husband and I and my daughter and her husband really enjoy the Maine cottage. Everything was perfect. We made two breakfast at it well equipped kitchen and enjoyed it right by the window looking out to the Pond.Thank very much Penelope and Pit.
Loved this cottage for mine and my husband's anniversary
