About this property
Cherry Surf, a Stunning Coastal Home on the Water. Don't Miss Out!
On a sandy bluff overlooking the vast inland sea they call LAKE MICHIGAN, sits a special place, tucked in amid the pine and maple: 4951 … the perfect one-bedroom getaway for couples who don’t mind feeling just a little cut off from civilization, who won’t miss leaving behind the sounds of cars, lawnmowers, and leaf blowers … who won’t mind being lulled to sleep by the sound of waves lapping the sand, or breeze stirring the trees: water and wind.
Your beautifully-modernized apartment sits atop an old coachhouse; former outbuilding of a 19th C resort (that no longer exists). Up in your second story aerie, you’ll have an elevated vantage point with plenty of windows facing the water. And every day at 4951, the sun sets in the West, sometimes a ball of flame sinking into the deep blue water at the horizon. Other times not. And you’ll be perfectly situated to witness whatever shapes and colors that day’s sunset takes, whether inside, looking out through the windows, or out on your capacious elevated wooden deck where you’ll be spending lots of time. Here, high amid the waving branches in a green canopy, you’ll be tempted to observe, “We live in a tree house!”
Inside the airy studio apartment, there’s a definitive “Oh wow!” factor at work. One, open vaulted room houses a luxurious king-size bed, dressing area, a modern kitchen with dining area with full lake view. Cozy.
The edge of the bluff is not even 100 feet away. Have a seat there, and survey this promontory where the water meets the land. The Lake has many moods, It can be calm and hypnotizing. It can be a baleful and frightening swirl of big waves and white water. Every day is different, and you learn to enjoy every kind of weather. Should you choose to get closer to (or in) the water, Duck Lake State Park is a half mile to the south on Scenic Dr (a right out of the driveway), and has an impressive expanse of sandy beach, along with miles of woodland trails, a beautiful inland waterway (Duck L) connected by a shallow, sandy channel to the big water, and some great sand dunes to stomp around on.
This place where the waters meet, and the dunes pile so high, has been a landmark that attracted tribes (Ottawa / Ojibwa / Potawatomi) for many centuries. In their birchbark canoes they’d come, to gather, and trade. The first anglo explorers, fur traders, and settlers, also found this to be a natural spot to congregate. (There’s a settler’s boneyard behind one of the big dunes, in the forest.) Head in the other direction a couple miles, and you’ll come to “land’s end” at the White Lake pier, with an historic lighthouse that dates back about 140 years, and a big public beach. White Lake is the other major body of water that identifies the area, connected to the big lake via a channel. At the far end of White L (about 7 miles east) sits the tidy little burgs of Whitehall and Montague; sister towns astride the meeting of the White River and White Lake. This was a salient point in the harvesting of white pines during the 1880’s. Plenty of mill town history here.
If little road trips to bigger towns are on your check list, Muskegon, an old harbor and shipping town with a big beach, is 15 miles to the south, and Grand Haven (renowned beach destination) is another 10 miles south of that. A 45 minute drive to the north will land you at Silver Lake; location of massive dune formations and great outdoor fun.

We had a wonderful time staying at this property - from the great location, wonderful property and fantastic communication from the owner.
Nice and quiet - a great place to bring that book you've been meaning to read!
Love the location and the view. Had great weather and explored area plenty to do also close to Muskegon. Bed was very comfortable and nice and quiet. Hopefully rent again in future. Only thing to note needs a dishwasher. Would like to note no direct access to beach from property needs a stairway.
Well the weather and Canaduan wildfire smoke wasn't ideal, but Annie's place was spectacular. Cozy, well appointed, comfortable...really couldn't ask or want anything more. Even with the haze, sitting on the second story deck and listening to the waves was great. It really did work out that with the conditions, we made different plans and visited several port towns along the coast: Saugatuck, Grand Haven, and had a nice dinner at the marina in Muskegon. Great trip and we'll be back. Thank you!
This modern little studio with a nice large deck was just as described, quiet and private with beautiful sunset views and very convenient to a lot of lakeside towns and activities. It was a perfect escape for us. The kitchen had it all including some basics like salt/pepper, oil, vinegar, and even spaghetti, unlike some vacation rentals where you have to bring or buy everything (thank you!) and even a bunch of nicer kitchen gadgetry in case you want to do some serious cooking. We left feeling relaxed and restored. Wonderful!
The place was very comfortable, extremely clean and had everything you would want & need (plenty of pantry items, beach chairs & towels and a lot more). The brand new deck was a great place to have our morning coffee and evening cocktails while enjoying the fabulous view and incredible sunsets. Annie responded right away to any concerns or questions we had. Even though there is no direct beach access, there is a beautiful beach just down the street (1/4 of a mile or so) at Duck Lake State Park. Both Duck Lake and Muskegon State Parks have some really beautiful hiking trails. This was the perfect place to unwind, unplug and relax. We really enjoyed our stay and would definitely come back!
This is a great location and the apartment was spotless and nicely stocked with all of the necessities. The bed was very comfortable. The owner and caretaker were both very nice and attentive. I would like to point out that there are 16 steps up to the deck and entry, however this was not an issue for us.
Duck Lake and Muskegon State Park were both close by and wonderful with nice walking trails. Muskegon State Park, especially, had a fantastic beach area. We were amazed that this area was not overrun with tourists. It was a welcome surprise, especially for July!
The view of the lake from the deck is somewhat obstructed. There was one branch in particular that was right in our line of sight. I kept thinking how much nicer the view would be if some of the branches were trimmed back and some of the overgrown bushes in the way were cut down. To completely see the sun go down we had to carry our camping chairs across a somewhat weedy side yard to the edge of the dune. Not a difficult thing but I did find a few ticks on me. It would be wonderful if there was a platform out there to set up on or even if the yard had been mowed. As noted, there is no direct access to the beach there.
Cell service was very spotty and there is no TV there which was fine for us. WIFI worked great!
Thanks for a lovely visit!
Such a charming place with remarkable views. We enjoyed tubing the white river, kayaking duck lake and trying out the local farmers market and breweries
This property was WONDERFUL. Quiet and private with a beautiful view. Easy access to great towns, restaurants, beaches, lighthouses and activities - or just sit on the deck, decompress and enjoy the view. Thank you
I picked this property because of the view and was not dissapointed. My husband and I had a wonderful time on this property. It was everything Annie promised. The view was fantastic, the studio was relaxing and clean. We went to the beach each day and ate every meal on the deck to enjoy the view. We will be back. It was a great relaxing gateaway.
This property exceeded our expectations in all ways. We wanted a place to get away from distractions and enjoy each other. The inside decor had a clean rustic but modern appeal. The view from the picture window is just stunning and gets better even on the deck. The property managers were prompt with their replies and very helpful. We enjoyed our coffee and devotion time on the deck while taking in the nature around us. We took in a beautiful sunset the first evening, drove a sand dune rover the next day, played and relaxed at the beach down by Duck Lake and Lake Michigan, drove into Whitehall to hear a band and have some dinner, and lastly, we went around Muskegon Lake to find a fun atmosphere at the Deck. We would definitely like to come back and highly recommend this to others
Cherry Surf is wonderful place to get away and slow down and relax. There is no tv and poor phone reception. Rather than a detriment- those losses turned into pluses as you focus on the beauty of the place. The owner and caretaker were fabulous- helpful, gracious, and kind. The surrounding community has great places to eat and a charm adding to the stay. It was a wonderful experience for us.
This was the perfect spot for a quiet weekend away with my fiancé! It was extremely clean, quiet, and we enjoyed the updates throughout! The property came well equipped with kitchen essentials, extra towels and linens, and extra tp and pt too! The deck was a great way to spend our mornings and evenings when the weather allowed. The only drawback for us was the lack of any shades in the entire home, which meant very early wakeups while we were on vacation. Additionally, a small tv would be a really great addition for watching a movie on a rainy day. Overall, we had a wonderful experience and give this Vrbo 5 stars!
My gf and I had a great stay here. Annie was a great host.

I am not a professional real estate wheeler-dealer. A better description of my M.O. is this: I live in some beautiful places, and move around a little bit. The properties I offer for rent are places I live in, and am in love with ... to such a degree that I want to share them with friends-family-strangers. Spread the good vibes! Plus, I apply the extreme personal touch to every experience, as you will find.
Why they chose this property
A coach house, perched high on a sandy bluff, right beside L Michigan? Do I really need to add additional details to that? This place has been a favorite little hideaway for decades for many family/friends. It’s a pretty historic structure, but we went all in last year to fix her up for that “Oh wow!” factor that some folks appreciate. (Most folks?)
What makes this property unique
Hidden in the treetops, surrounded by sounds of wind/water/rustling leaves, with a daily sunset mega-show right out your window. Quiet, secluded, intimate, cozy, with all the perks of a bucolic coastal area available all around you: dunes, beachcombing, woodland hikes, lakes of all sizes, and some small town pleasures a short drive away.
