We had a wonderful stay and couldn't have asked for a better spot. The condo was comfortable and nicely furnished, with everything we needed to feel right at home. It's clear the property is well maintained — everything was clean and in great working order. The views from the lanai were a daily highlight. We spent our mornings and evenings out there enjoying the scenery and the sound of the ocean. The location is fantastic, with easy access to the beaches just a short walk away. Hotel 1 being just a few steps away also made it easy to grab cocktails and dinner or a morning coffee. We'd absolutely stay here again and recommend it to anyone looking for a relaxing getaway.
We love the location of the Puu Poa condominiums. Richard's unit is an exemplary example of a comfortably furnished and clean space in that complex. Beds are extremely comfortable as are living room, solarium, and lanai furniture. The kitchen is well stocked. We'd definitely consider staying there again if a return to Princeville is in the cards for us.
The condo was beautiful. Had a couple minor issues upon arrival that were resolved immediately. Communications with the owner and housekeeping were excellent. Kitchen was well stocked and organized. They have a glass water wall that is beautifully backlit at night. I would definitely stay here again.
We recently stayed at this condo hoping for a peaceful Hawaiian romantic getaway with a great view. Unfortunately, during our visit, there was a lot of ongoing maintenance with workers on-site most days. It led to quite a bit of noise and obstructed the view we were excited about. I’d recommend checking with the host before booking to see if the work is finished. The unit is nice and adequately clean, but the place is dated and a bit tired and needs to be updated to bring the condo up to a much fresher and nice/modern place. Once refreshed, I think this place will shine again, but guests should be aware of current conditions. The location itself is great, but not on a beach; it sits on a cliff, which has amazing views of the ocean. There is no easy access to the beach.

Aloha Andrea,
First, I apologize for not reply back to you sooner.
Second, the condo association has been going thru the exterior painting project since January this year. During your recent stays, the painting accompanied with concrete spalling repairs were supposed only worked on the parking lot side of the building as told. However, the contractor made the change order to include the west side of the building II's wall, where the unit's situated. If I knew the change order before your arrival, I would have advised you. Unfortunately, I do not live on Kauai myself to know the daily job progress!
That's been said, from now on to August 4, the contractor will not return to the building II for any further works (they are working on the building I before returning to work on the ocean side of the building II). This time would be great opportunity for anyone who is interested in spending the summer vacation here! Additionally, I appreciate your two cents of my second home; the interiors are based on me and my wife's personal tastes though we do work on some upgrade. Photos on the website are all current - What you see is what you get.
Finally, in the event of your plan for the future return to Puu Poa, I would be happy to offer you some discount or complementary, Mahalo for your understanding.

I have stayed at Pua Poa 10 or 12 times. At one time , I lived just around the corner. Host was good. He fixed the door while I was there. The unit is tired! They lead you to believe it's been remodeled but it's really not. They added a few things that were haphazardly done.

Hello Kent
I have discussed your review with the VRBO's account executive and was encouraged reply directly to you.
First, I have owned Puu Poa since 1991, the interior designs, furniture, fixture and the layout are based on my wife and I's personal tastes (it's our second home! neither the hotel room nor time share unit). Our neighboring unit(s) that you claimed stay in the past were purchased and renovated according to the trendy construction materials and interior furniture inventory available in the marketplace for the past 10-15 years. I replaced my furniture every 5~7 years!
Second, I recently have had windows of both bedrooms, kitchen and dining room replaced. The project initiated in last summer; however, all windows were custom sizes manufactured in mainland, shipped by boat to Kauai and finally finished the installations last month, after your departure.
Giving the continuous 5-Star reviews given from the guests who stayed in the unit after your departure, your comment to me is more or less personal? rather than the overall experience! Regardless, I am sorry that my unit did not meet your expectation.

This property is listed as 5 star and nothing could be further from the truth. The property is very old with no updates. The house smells of mold, and there is a leak coming from the ceiling to the floor in the area between the living and family room. We came into a puddle inside when we arrived. The paint is chipping and the furniture is all very old.and the tile looks very dirty and the grout is black The bedrooms both have an old dirty feel to them. Very uncomfortable and worried about bedbugs. So much so, that I left the property a day early. The kitchen, has several ant traps on the floor, there are no wine glasses, no water glasses, there are only 3 mismatched coffee mugs to drink out of. The only upside of this property is the patio and view. But if you want to be comfortable, this would not be the place for you. I believe they should change the description from a 5 star to a 3 star rating.

Hi Cathy
I was out of the country after you posted your dissatisfaction. As you demanded me to make you a "whole" the day after your check-in, you rejected my proposal of sending my caretaker to see you. You admitted your assessment of my unit was based on Halekulani Hotel, a five-star hotel, where you stayed and checked out from Honolulu before came to Kauai. Inadvertently, your booking of my unit was likely impulsive?! since you booked the unit on May 15th for the May 18th arrival, without thoroughly understanding the nature of VRBO lodging.
The property label "5 Star" is coincided with the "Reviews" completed by the past guests and VRBO.
I own the unit since 1991. It's the second home, not hotel, not time-share. I live in Honolulu with my wife. While not on Kauai, I have shared my unit with many guests over the past many years! My unit is a private home, not a hotel room. The interior decoration, furniture are based on my personal taste; there are multiple photos of the unit posted online. There are "What You See is What You Get", no misrepresentation. Additionally, I won't be able to address look dirty, puddle water, dirty black grout (the tile is Mexican Charcoal Gray Tiles go well with dark gray grout) issues? since you disallowed to meet with my caretaker. Before your arrival, Kauai had many days of rains in North Shore. It is commonly to cause the locked home smell musty, especially the unit was closed for a while before guests arrived. My caretaker could have opened the windows earlier before your arrival to air out the smell. So, I apologized for this. Ant traps on the floor, that's because the prior guests discovered ants near the kitchen windows, this was due to the delayed outside caulking to the newly installed windows that the contractor did not finish the job timely. There are plenty of coffee cups stored inside the cabinets above the microwave and air fryer. Wine glasses and water glasses are inside the cabinet by the bar counter next to the refrigerator. Apparently, you did not explore all of the kitchen cabinets, while you were in. Never have complains of the bedrooms, and absolutely no bedbugs!!
You paid $529 with 10% last minute discount for 2-bedroom 2-bathroom oceanfront fully furnished condo for one night and expect match to Halekulani Hotel seems too unfair to me. I recommend you stay at 1 Hotel, if you decide return to Kauai.
We spent four days at this property in early February and loved our time. We saw whales throughout the day while sitting on the lanai, the unit is spacious and clean, and the host was readily available. This was a great property and we would definitely stay again.
Our stay was super. Listening to the surf and having the ocean right in front was tranquil. Owner was so accommodating as well. Totally recommending this property.
Fabulous vacation in gorgeous property with ocean view
The location is wonderful, with a direct ocean view and walking distance to 1 Hotel. The unit is swanky and well equipted and maintained. The owner is gracious and helpful.
Great location and view. Very roomy and comfortable for our family of 4. Appreciated the beach gear that was available for our use. Convenient parking.

About the host

Originally from Philadelphia. Lived in Hawaii since 1974. My wife Rosaline and I have been married for 30 years and going. We live in Honolulu. Puu Poa is our getaway second home. I was an entrepreneur owned multiple companies, with my wife who served as the Controller/CFO. Currently, I serve as a lobbyist for a national real estate property management company for Hawaii, besides being an instructor for real estate continued education for realtors, expert witness for lawsuits, and US subchapter 5 bankruptcy trustee. In 2022, I was appointed by the then Hawaii governor Ige to serve as one of the Real Estate Commissioners for the State of Hawaii, a 3-year term.
Why they chose this property
I fell in love with Puu Poa while vacationing on Kauai in 1980s. Eventually decided to acquire the unit in 1990. The place offers unobstructed breath taking ocean views in front of your eyes, the playground of marine mammals, sounds of crashing waves, lightning shows in the stormy night and meteor showers in the summer night.
What makes this property unique
Golf courses, Princeville Shopping Center, fine dining restaurants, Hideaway beach below the property, tennis/pickleball court, hiking to Na Pali Coast, visiting quaint Hanalei town, Kilauea Lighthouse and bird sanctuary, not mentioning surfing, canoeing and paddle boarding on Hanalei River. Horseback riding, helicopter ride, waterfalls.....
