About the property

House, 4 Bedrooms + Sleeping Porch, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 11)

Enjoy this renovated century old home on the creek in historic Murrells Inlet.

This large family home is perfect for families that enjoy the great outdoors.

The beaches of Garden City, Huntington, Litchfield, or Pawleys are only a short drive away. (or boat ride)

The vibrant shopping and entertainment of Pawleys Island, Litchfield, Garden City, & Myrtle Beach are only 15 minutes away!. The unspoiled beauty of the Inlet and its marshes are at your doorstep.

Kings Krest has plenty of room for the whole family. Four bedrooms allow for plenty of adults and/or children without giving up privacy.

Three porches provide for open-air dining on the eating porch, quiet relaxation on the sitting porch, or a seasonal open-air night on the sleeping porch. Wifi availability

The home also has a living room, dining room and eat-in kitchen. The back patio has a brick barbecue for large cookouts or oyster roasts, along with charcoal grills.

The dock was built in 2007. The child-safe upper dock is covered, and has lighting and electrical outlets.

The dock has running water and a sink, especially useful for cleaning your fresh catch. The floating dock can secure a boat of 20+ feet and has enough water at low tide to provide access to the ocean. (No boats allowed larger than a 24-25 feet, please.)

A ladder is available to help swimmers out of the water. Crab traps can be tied off the floating dock for a good harvest of blue and stone crabs in the spring and summer.

One of the best flounder holes in the Inlet is just off the front of the dock! And of course, the bounty of the Atlantic is just a ten minute boat ride away.

Kings Krest is loaded with character. The home is perfect for those looking to relax with many creature comforts. Make yourself comfortable and enjoy this historic one-of-a kind getaway!

Absolutely no house parties. We do not allow guests to have large parties, weddings, or other special events, as we are zoned residential.

History -

Prior to 1906, Archie Woodward purchased this property for $150 and built the house around 1909. In 1920, J.W. King of Raleigh, NC and his wife, Capitola Holiday King of Galivants Ferry, bought it as a summer home at an auction for $1,985. “King’s Krest” refers to the family surname and the high point on which the home sits.

The King’s three children shared time at their parents’ summer home through the late 1930s. In 1941, one son, Dr. William King, and his wife, Mary Catherine Carter King, (Mama Kate) took title to “King’s Krest.” Together with their children and grandchildren they spent many summers at the family home well into the 1960s. Today, it is the 50 members of the fourth, fifth and sixth King family generations who enjoy “King’s Krest.” For generations, the kids have swung on the wisteria vines, jumped off the dock’s railing, bounced on Oliver’s joggling board, begged for hush puppies at the Oliver’s Lodge back door, ran in the creek with Roosevelt “Rooster” Pickett and Bubba Love, hung out at the old government dock, visited Eason’s store and enjoyed the July 4th family reunions.

“King’s Krest” is filled with generations of family memories, including old water skis, fishnets and pencil sketches. Many of the black and white photos hail from Chip Smith, local photographer who lives in the tree house apartment over the garage, circa 1930, once home for the King’s servants. The tree is estimated to be 150 to 200 years old.

In the dining room is Mama Kate’s writing desk, which used to face south in the family room towards the sitting porch. The bell on the fireplace was used by Viola, the family cook, to summon the Kings for breakfast. Viola, who daily walked from her home in Brookgreen Gardens to work for the Kings, remained with the family into the early 1980s.

Though there is an eating porch off the kitchen, the dining room table, two green chairs and buffet date back to the first generation King matriarch. The table is set with Mama Kate’s everyday china from the 1940s.

The upstairs sleeping porch was screened in after WWII and filled with army cots to accommodate Dr. King’s own growing army of grandchildren, who slept here until the 1970s, when A/C arrived. Recently the upstairs and downstairs porches were remodeled.

The Inlet side of “King’s Krest” has always been the front of the house given an old road that ran between the creek and the houses. Notice the rope swing that has been hanging from the old oak tree since WWII. The boys nailed steps to the tree, making climbing easier. Over the past 60 years, the tree has grown over one of those steps.

Christmas mornings for Dr. King’s grandchildren at “King’s Krest” means a visit to Belin’s church service followed by a romp in the Inlet to gather seafood. King’s Krest Christmases set the tone for a warm, cozy, creek side holiday, adorned with natural magnolia, cedar and cypress greenery and shells.

Guestbook comments from the manager

Our King family met at Kings Krest to discuss the rental, upkeep, projects that need to be completed, and all finances of our property. We have a great time as we always share old family stories. Kings Krest is a wonderful rental property on the deep water creek! A new dock is presently being built following Hurricane Mathew. The home is in great shape and is ready for families and friends to enjoy!

Kings Krest is wonderful!

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 10'stayed at Kings Krest in July for a week. It was the best ever - such a wonderful, well equipped home, 4 spacious bedrooms, 3 big porches for visiting and playing games and one porch was perfect for all our meals! Our children loved playing in the big yard- with a great rope swing - under the old oaks! Now the new dock might have been the best part.....we fished, crabbed, and swam off the dock and also parked our boat for times we ventured out in the creek! We will be returning to Kings Krest very soon! It is a well kept secret! - filled with much history. You will feel like you stepped back into your grandmothers home! Fabulous!!!!

The new dock is fabulous - for sunning, fishing, crabbing, and swimming - or just relaxing in the hammock! Sure hope you can return again one day soon! The house will be waiting for you!

Great place to stay

  • 5 of 5

Enjoyed my time at Kings Krest! I was surprised at how well it handled the big crowd for meals with the huge picnic table on the screened porch. The covered dock was a great place to get up early grab a cup of coffee and watch the sunrise!

Favorite place to go on the SC coast!

  • 5 of 5

So much to do on the beautiful inlet, or you can simply relax & soak up the sunshine & breezes.

Having options locally all around MI makes staying at King's Krest convenient for easy access to beaches, boating, kayaking, visiting Brookgreen Gardens, putt-putt, shopping, water parks, tons of restaurant options, & so much more. Amenities provided at KK make it fun & comfortable for choosing many inside activities when a little down time might be desired, or the rain is stopping your outside adventures. The large table on the eating porch offered many hours of family & friends visiting, eating amazing meals together (with the occasional crab pickin'), as well as some game-playing. And lots of laughs!

The house has a unique charm about it, with interesting history you can read about from coffee table books, while propping your feet up in the den for a rest. Love the eclectic mix of decor, ranging from "decades old", to modern styles with bold ("happy") colors!

My favorite times of the day at KK were often on the dock: early morning with a cup of coffee in hand (& hammock awaiting); and evenings when the stars came out, lights shimmered on the water, & you listened to the night sounds of the active marine & wildlife.

Just amazing & relaxing when you want, or need it, to be!

I certainly hope you can return one day soon - the house, dock, and creek will be waiting for your next adventure!

Splendid homey natural retreat

  • 5 of 5

Rare comfortable, beautiful home of 3 big porches, 4 bedrooms (sleeps 16), 2 bathrooms and new bath house.

Perfect deep water floating dock with adjoining pier and lanai (flat section) for ALL outdoor water/marsh pleasures.

Living is easy in various hammocks esp. the one under 100+ year old live oak. Outdoor cooking facilities and indoor table that seats 10+. TV's in every room; WiFi and excellent photographic material.

Treat yourself to old world comfort with modern conveniences. You won't regret it!

The BEST days of Summer are spent at King's Krest!

  • 5 of 5

The BEST of summer can be spent right in Murrells Inlet at King's Krest! The inlet life is so good and has become some of my favorite memories since childhood! There are so many activities available but it is always nice to relax in a hammock with a good book and do nothing too! Our visits get better with every year as our extended family grows! The house was full and my heart full as well! There's nothing finer than days under the love oaks by the inlet with family and friends. This year was extra special spending the week of July 4th with family and friends! I highly recommend you book your family vacation soon! We look forward to our days of inlet life again some day soon!
