We have enjoyed the journey of transforming an authentic log cabin & crafting a creative 4 bedroom, 3 bath timber home. We have used natural wood, timbers, stone, and tile together to create a 'natural living environment'.
Loren Johnston purchased this house in 1999
We built it with a vision of bringing together a warm environment. Tranquil & natural setting of wooded setting, seasonal stream, lots of natural products used in the building process- stone, tile, hand crafted plaster, reclaimed fir timbers, and lots of beautiful spacial rooms.
The large open and covered deck area has 2 picnic tables and some chairs for outside dining, propane grill, and a beautiful view of the natural environment! Enjoy the peaceful setting of nature, seasonal meandering stream around the property, lots of nature, and only a few skips away from the North Shores of Lake Superior.
Amazing setup. Our group couldn't believe our eyes when we pulled into the driveway and took a look at the cabin in person. Gorgeous! After stepping inside to settle in, we continued to be pleasantly surprised by the property. I'd definitely stay at this cabin again.
The only downside to the property is the distance that you have to carry all of your belongings from the car to the cabin.
We didn’t want to stay in Duluth near all the action and this home is ideally located 10-12 minutes north of downtown. Not water front property, but a quiet brook running through the property and very private!
I was looking for a rental home to celebrate number of occasions - My parent’s 50th wedding anniversary, dad’s birthday, and my nephew’s 2nd birthday. I found this place and it was perfect to accommodate our family, especially since they allowed pets (dogs). As a professional event planner, I’m always looking for great people to work with and have high expectations. Loren was wonderful to work with and super responsive with all my correspondence. The home was well equipped with kitchen supplies, towels, games, grill, and furniture in shared spaces. Don’t expect to watch tons of TV as there is no cable, but our family didn’t mind as the point of a vacation is to spend time with each other and converse… not watch TV. We cooked one large dinner and two breakfasts while enjoying these meals in the large dining area overlooking the nature around us. Very comfortable home and sleeping accommodations for our group of 5 adults and 1 two year old. I was also impressed (as a former engineer) with the electrical wiring and lighting, heated floors in certain rooms, and zone control heating in every space. Great for adjusting heat settings to suit everyone.
This beats staying in a hotel and dealing with parking, rowdy neighbors, and lack of family/living room space (unless you book a suite). My only complaint was the weather was cool and foggy so we didn’t get to enjoy the large deck. Talking about making this an annual get away for family and would stay here every time. Very much enjoyed our stay and recommend this home to others looking for comfort and privacy!!
After a 5-week search and 50 email exchanges, our Midwest scouting party settles on a Duluth cabin deep in the woods (no inland lake for 20 miles), but many urban amenities nearby. The 8-bed cabin fits 15, with room to spare. We enjoy our base camp and timidly explore the beauty, history, eateries, hikes, sights, sounds all around us. We split up to enjoy golf (6 men), while the 6 women enjoy the Scenic Café. Nine of us enjoy kayaking on Lake Fredenberg, while all of us enjoy the elusive warm(er) waters of Island Lake. Lakefront board-walking and the Canal Bridge is a universal choice, as is frolicking at Gooseberry Falls & picnicking at Split Rock Lighthouse point. Four of us enjoy intergenerational tennis, which comes down to a winner-take-all game, won by the younger generation. While our wives run with the big fish at Duluth’s aquarium, the two older (superior?) men trek the Superior Hiking Trail to Bean and Bear lakes. Our grandaughter makes home-bodies of many, so we eat on this spacious cabin deck quite a lot and dine out sparingly. With many common areas in this large cabin we can visit and amuse ourselves at all hours, day and night. Never turned on the TV, which appeared to be a throw-back to another era. The kitchen is well-furnished, so that made eating in, as often as we did, very doable. recommend this to any large group.
We chose the house for its proximity to the north shore and access to winter activities. We planned to downhill and cross country ski as well as snowmobile. Due to the lack of snow, we skied at Spirit Mountain and had a wonderful time. Our group was 3 adults and 6 children ages 16-11. The kitchen and dining area worked perfectly and had plenty of dishes and cooking utensils. The owners really thought about what people would need. With a dishwasher and washer and dryer (soaps provided) it makes it easy to take care of cleaning up. With sleeping areas on 3 floors we were able to arrange sleeping for all comfortably and with privacy. While the weather was cold and windy at night we were cozy inside. The owners were accessible and helpful and just a phone call away. It was a wonderful place to get away.
We are fans of the north shore and would love to return to explore summer activities and have a chance to enjoy the deck and beautiful property.
We stayed at the cabin for 3 nights, and it was wonderful! We had a group of 12 women for a girls' weekend. There was plenty of sleeping space (the main cabin has 7 beds, all full or queen, and one king) and three bathrooms! We never felt crowded. The deck/porch area is phenomenal -- we spent so much time out there! It does have a long walk up to the actual cabin, so definitely pack your things and plan to carry them up the outdoor stairs. Another reviewer mentioned that, so I came prepared and packed so I only needed to make a few trips. The owner is so kind, too! He was easy to work with, and flexible with our check-in/out times. I think we'll rent it in the winter again!
I have to say... this place was fabulous! It's gorgeous and scenic. I've read the other reviews... I would agree if you have trouble walking, the walk up to the cabin would be semi-difficult. If you don't have problems, the walk up is beyond worth it.
I LOVED the decor inside. Beautiful!
The reviews on the beds are outdated. There are plenty of beds--all of which are very comfortable and cozy (not broken). Bathrooms are fantastic.
The location was great.
I loved the kitchen as well. They have all pots, pans, dishes, that anyone could need.
It was a girl's weekend with 6 of us (in our 20's) and obviously there was plenty of space. We talked of having our significant others up next time in the summer.
It's a shame we couldn't use the porch because of the weather--it's huge! With grills, tables, etc.
There would be PLENTY of space for twice the people.
All of this is worth every penny. And speaking of price: very affordable!
Thank you so much Loren and Deanna. What a great place you have! ...well maintained and it feels like you thought of everything :)
