About tom and Vicki

Aloha! We welcome you to the Bamboo Valley Inn. As your hosts, we hope you enjoy the serenity of our property as much as we have over the past 17 years. Vicki is a special education teacher and teacher of the blind/visually impaired. Tom is a hotel consultant. We reside in a separate home on the property approximately 100 yards away, hidden behind the bamboo. We are available to answer any of your questions and fulfill any of your requests, but if you are coming here to seek privacy, we will be a phone call away if we are needed.

tom and Vicki purchased this apartment in 1994

Why tom and Vicki chose Haiku-Pauwela

We first saw this property in 1994 and immediately fell in love with the location. Being near all the necessary conveniences, but hidden in a quiet tropical valley, surrounded by bamboo forests, running stream, and towering eucalyptus trees is ideal. Our 1,000 foot elevation brings us cool nights, resulting in great sleeping weather. We have lived here for 18 years and continue to appreciate the beauty each day.

What makes this apartment unique

One of our favorite activities is taking long walks on beautiful Baldwin Beach, located just 10 minutes away. This beach offers shallow protected coves, great for young children as well as open ocean for those who love the waves.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We stayed two weeks at the Bamboo View Suite and had a really great time there. The apartment was very well equipped, so we didn't miss anything. Everything was brand new. If there was a little 'problem' (i.e. we could not figure out how the TV worked), Tom & Vicky were there immediately to help yet did not impose. Our children loved the horse and loved to give him little treats. The apartment is surrounded by plants and you almost feel like in the jungle: absolutely gorgeous and all you hear is nature. Almost everything on the island is within short driving distance. Baldwin beach is a 15 min drive from the apartment. The beach there is great and offers something to everyone. There is even a protected area ideal for little kids. The beach is not crowded at all. There is plenty of space anytime. We highly recommend the apartment. It is ideal for everybody.

Just what I was looking for.

Comfortable, clean, attractive, spacious, well-stocked kitchen, friendly feline, laundry facilities, good communication with hosts, peaceful. Only thing that would make it better would be a hot tub. Hope to stay again next year!

Nice little get-away

  • 5 of 5

We (2 adults, 1 kid, 1 baby) stayed at Bamboo Valley Inn for 3 weeks in May 2017 and very much liked it. In total there are 3 units available on 2 floors, one small unit on the ground floor and two units on the upper level. The owners live 2 minutes away. Bamboo Valley is at the northern shore of Maui - away from the more crowded southern/western end - a bit elevated in a secluded bush-type area. Here some pros/cons:

- easy straight-forward communication, friendly & helpful owners

- decent competitive price

- great for people looking for some privacy and off-the beaten track

- clean appartments

- WiFi/washing facilities available

- short drive from some nice spots

- as the Inn is on the hill you tend to sleep better due to cooler clima

- Car-dependency (but hey, I guess that's the US in general ;-)), one tends to drive a lot

- Appartment on the lower floor somewhat small (we didn't see that on the pictures but after an initial wow we could't bother less)

- If you are looking for beaches without wind you better stay on the western/southern end

Overall: absolutely to be recommended! Thanks a lot.

Underpriced (don't tell the owners)

  • 5 of 5

Really, really impressed with this place.

I waited far too long to book accommodations for my trip to Maui, and so when I finally got down to it, there wasn't much left to choose from. When I saw this unit, I had to do a double-take to ensure I was reading the ad correctly, and not sharing the unit with other guests. And it's true, the interior photos you see are representative of your own private unit within the three-unit Inn. Among other amenities, you get your OWN (i) spacious living room with large flat-screen TV (though why you'd ever turn it on is beyond me); (ii) well-equipped kitchen (doesn't have a traditional stove but it does have hotplates and a large toaster oven, along with dishwasher, microwave, sink, large island for food prep, full-sized fridge/freezer); (iii) tons of floor to ceiling windows wrapping around the kitchen/dining/living room area; (iv) two air conditioners that will bring the space down to sub-zero temperatures in a couple hours if you want; (v) full-sized bath and shower; (vi) two decent sized bedrooms, both with ceiling fans and what I believe are double beds.

A couple of other comments: The space was immaculately clean when we arrived, and the owners provided a little guest tray with a pound of local coffee, some biscotti, oatmeal, a selection of tea, energy bars, and a few other things. In other words, the owners care about their Inn and they care about their guests. They also provided detailed directions from the airport, because the Inn is tucked away in a little valley, and would be decidedly hard to find the first time without a map.

On this last point, a little editorial: this was my fourth trip to Maui, and the first time on this side of the island, having previously stayed in Kapalua, Maaleaea, and Kihei. I was a bit tenative at first, thinking (i) I'd be staying in monsoon territory, and (ii) I'd not have as much to do. Regarding the former, I can say it only rained a handful of times, typically in the early morning or the evening, and regarding the latter, I felt I had *more* things to do on this side. Granted, my trip was predominantly cycling based, and three of the four signature Maui rides start close to Paia (and by extension, Haiku), but in terms of proximity to great restaurants, quaint little coffee shops, smoothie joints, beaches, lush greenery, and breathtaking views, you've got all of it close by, and at the end of the day, you've got a clean, quiet, secluded Inn to come back to.

Very nice, clean, spacious and great location

  • 5 of 5

We really loved this place. It's off the beaten path in Haiku (just outside of Paia). If you want the resort experience of kaanapali, this is not it. This is a quite and perfect location if you want to access all of Maui. One hour from Lahaina, two hours from Hana, and about one hour and 45 minutes to the summit if Halleakalla. Nice, clean, kind owners, great communication, easy checking and checkout!
