About The Owner

Tom arrived in Juneau in 1977 and Debbie arrived three years later. They completed their new home along with the Alaska Northern Sands Suite and the Ocean View Room on the Auke Bay beach in August of 2005.

The Owner purchased this apartment in 2005

Why The Owner chose Juneau

We were extremely fortunate to be able to build our home and the Alaska Northern Sands vacation rental on the Auke Bay beach. It is unique because of its spectacular views, proximate access to the Juneau International Airport, the Alaska Marine Highway ferry terminal, and shopping as well as the relative quite of the surrounding neighborhood.

What makes this apartment unique

Be sure to bring your binoculars for the best viewing of wildlife and the spectacular scenery! From your accommodations, the gazebo or on the beach you just might see, Eagles – regularly year round, right in front of your Suite; Salmon – regularly jumping in July & August; Orcas – occasionally in summer, usually in the distance; Humpback whales – occasionally in summer, sometimes as close as 100 yards off shore. And although rarely, we have even seen them breach in front of the house; Otters – occasionally year round; Seals – occasionally year round; Sea Lions - often in winter; Ducks – regularly in fall and winter; Deer – occasionally year round; Blue Herons– occasionally in summer. Enjoy the soothing sounds of the AKNS waterfall and pond from the Suite or the veranda. Walk down to the beach for some Alaska beachcombing. Or just relax and enjoy the view and the sounds of the ocean waves from our oceanfront gazebo.

Our family was planning a visit to Juneau for a family wedding. We took our time making a decision to stay in the Penthouse Suite. Having never been to Juneau, Alaska or more accurately described - Auke Bay we had no idea what to expect. Our only knowledge were reviews of prior visitors and assumptions. Tom and Denali greeted us at the airport even before our luggage arrived! Our family was more than pleasantly surprised. The accommodations are perfect for two adults and two children (we have one child). Short and sweet - we fell in love. We arrived September 1st and departed September 6th already planning our next adventure back to Juneau. Tom, Debbie and Denali were more than accommodating. We were not sure what to expect as we were staying in someone else's home. Tom, Debbie & Denali create a neighborly atmosphere so much so that our downstairs "neighbor" renting the ocean view room ran upstairs to alert us that there was an Aurora Borealis! Denali became such an integral part of our trip that we felt like we were missing something when we departed without a goodbye to this precious friend. The view, the location, eagles flying and landing in the trees every morning and night. The Penthouse Suite was perfect for our family. We sat on the deck every night enjoying the beautiful view, a quiet glass of wine and immense peace. We have told so many of our family and friends about this unit we are afraid it will not be available for future bookings. The suite was perfectly appointed with everything necessary for a short or long term visit including, washer/dryer, iron and full kitchen. The view from our bedroom window was nothing short of phenomenal. Located within 10 minutes of the airport, downtown and within minutes of local recommended dining opportunities. Denali adopted our son and played with him every day chasing rocks and shells! Cameron played with Denali every chance he had and we very soon came to think of Denali as a part of our family. You never know what to expect with a private rental. Our family lacked nothing and were given so much more. The grounds are beautiful thanks to the William's family hard work. The opportunities rain or shine to enjoy the beauty of the area either in the deck or Gazebo - a gift. Thank you Tom, Debbie and Denali for being gracious hosts and welcoming us in to your home. We started planning our next adventure back to Juneau the day we departed.

We recently spent an entire week in the upstairs apartment. We are a family of 4 (my husband and I slept in the bedroom, and the kids in the sofa bed). The place is beautiful, with breathtaking views. We were able to see bald eagles flying by all day, plus we also saw otters! My favorite part of the day was to sit in the terrace watching the sunset.

The apartment is not only spotless but also beautifully decorated. It is a very complete unit, With everything necessary to feel at home. It is also incredibly convenient to have the washer/dryer in the unit. The gardens are also spectacular.

One of my favorite things about this place is the location. Juneau is a small city and easy to drive around in. However, downtown can get somewhat crazy with all the cruises that arrive on a daily basis. We were close enough to downtown and the airport, but at the same time far enough from the craziness. The glacier is about a 10 minute drive and there are walking trails all over. We went fishing almost every day, and the bay was only 5 minutes away.

The owners (including Denali the dog) were incredibly friendly and helpful. If our travels take us to Juneau again, we will not hesitate to stay here again.

Clean property, Great Views, Good People, Amazing Gardens

  • 5 of 5

The owner (and his dog, Denali) met us at the airport and guided us to home. The view is even more stunning than the VRBO photos show. As a family of 4, we rented both the upstairs unit and the separate downstairs unit. While the 4 of us fit fine sleeping in the upstairs unit (and we spent most of our time there each day), it was nicer to have both units. Plus, the 2 of us that were fishing late each night slept in the downstairs unit so our late-night entry did not disturb anyone. (We caught many fish from the rocky beach along this property. Mostly sculpins, but a few salmon too.) The owners live on the property but are separate; it was a non-issue for us. When we did interact with them, they were very kind and had excellent info to share about the area. We saw Denali the dog a lot. Because we kept calling him to play with our kids. The units are very well kept. We are frequent home renters, and both places were A+ clean and in excellent condition. Beds are comfy and kitchen well stocked. Nice bathrooms. The gardens surrounding the property are stunning in the summer. Not just nice. Not just pretty. Stunning. We would not hesitate to stay here again!

Great Ocean View

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I and our daughter stayed in the middle room with one queen size bed and a fold away bed for our daughter. The room was clean and had a lovely ocean view with ample areas to sit outside and enjoy the fine weather we had. I like this area north of Juneau- less touristy and quieter but still close to many attractions. Our hosts were kind and helpful. My daughter caught salmon from the shore below the room by casting spoons. There is no stove and we couldn't get the hot plate to work so we uses the griddle and grill for cooking. They need new towels. I would definitely stay there again.

Wonderful views!

Beautiful place, wish we had more time there. Ideal location, away from cruise ship traffic downtown, but still an easy drive to go into Juneau.

A piece of heaven Found in AK!

  • 5 of 5

After a year of traveling this was the best find ever. The gardens and home are immaculate, and the view is not only breathtaking but indescribable until you see it yourself. If you are fortunate enough to find availability at the AK Sands you will not be disappointed. The beautiful city of Juneau has so much to see and do but the AK Sands is a destination in itself. A day spent on the patio, deck, gazebo or walking the beach to the nearby marina is a day well spent. Tom and Debbie really care about their guests and go out of their way to make you comfortable. Even Denali their beautiful dog will great you and give you a tour of the beach. I can't wait to go back!
