Spend your 2018 vacation on picturesque Squam Lake, the site of the movie 'On Golden Pond'. In fact, the movie's producer, Bruce Gilbert, spent the summer with his family in this beautiful knotty pine cottage on the lake while the movie was being filmed. Enjoy swimming, boating, fishing, water-skiing from the private dock and hear the loons calling at night and in the early morning. Very private wood road location, yet conveniently located a short drive from Holderness shopping and marinas. Easy day trips to a wide variety of sights, including The Science and Wildlife Center in Holderness, the outlet stores in North Conway, the Mt. Washington Auto Road, or even the Maine coast for lunch and a visit to the L.L. Bean store. Enjoy the numerous nearby mountain trails. Explore Squam Lake's many hidden coves and indulge yourself in the unforgettable sights of this unspoiled, clear-water, mountain-region lake from a bygone era. Perfect for Summer lake activities or Fall Foliage viewing! Choice dates still available - call or email now!
Lake Activities: Private 70-foot dock can accommodate two or more boats. Bring your own boat (boat launch ramp is less than a mile away) or rentals are available from 3 nearby marinas.
Picnic on one of the many public access islands on the lake. Enjoy water-skiing, tubing, and wake boarding.....canoeing and kayaking are also popular activities.
7-mile-long lake features many secluded fishing areas away from swimmers and skiers.
Tours by boat of the 'On Golden Pond' movie sites on the lake are available in nearby Holderness -- visit 'Purgatory Cove' where Henry Fonda clung to the rocks waiting for Katherine Hepburn to dive in and rescue him. Later you can dine at Walter's Basin, the Holderness restaurant named for the movie's biggest lake trout catch.
Attend Sunday-morning (non-denom) services on Church Island in a stunning outdoor setting (Memorial Day thru Labor Day).
Explore a wide variety of lake features: The Narrows, jump off The Rock in Rattlesnake Cove, nesting Bald Eagles (June/early July) on Little Loon Island, Dog Cove and, of course, the loons of Squam.
Mountains: Hike the many nearby mountain trails of Mts. Morgan and Percival, East and West Rattlesnake (an easy climb with a glorious view of the entire lake) and Mt. Chocorua. Further north you can find the Presidential Range of the White Mountains including famous Tuckerman's Ravine and Mt Washington, the tallest peak east of the Mississippi, with its Auto Road or Cog Railway options for those who don't want to hike it on foot but want to enjoy the views from the top. Many more mountain climbs of varying difficulty are within a short drive.
Local Attractions: Some of the many local attractions of the area include The Science and Wildlife Center in Holderness, featuring a wide array of rescued animals from the local area plus many educational activities.
The Polar Caves are just a short drive away in West Plymouth and The Cannon Mountain Gondolas are just a bit further north in Franconia.
Many other natural wonders can be found in the Franconia Notch area including The Flume, The Gorge, The Basin, Indian Head Mountain and outstanding mountain views. And don't miss the new 'Old Man of the Mountain' Memorial attraction, which re-creates that spectacular iconic natural rock formation.

About Jim Alvord
Our family has been vacationing on Squam Lake since the early 1920's. My paternal grandmother was born and grew up in nearby Plymouth NH; she maintained a summer residence on Squam beginning in 1923. My father brought the first pair of water skis to Squam Lake in the late 1930's; until then, the aquaplane was the most daring water activity on Squam.
Jim Alvord purchased this House in 1952
Why Jim Alvord chose Holderness
Vintage lake cottage, well maintained and updated appropriately, features a fieldstone fireplace for warming those nippy lakeside nights. Our cottage is situated in a quiet cove, yet is only a short boat ride from the Holderness channel and nearby shopping and marinas to gas up and stock up on picnic necessities for your day on the lake.
What makes this House unique
Share a piece of Hollywood film history.....'On Golden Pond', the Oscar-winning film of Ernest Thompson's memorable book, was filmed here on Squam and the film's producer, Bruce Gilbert and his family stayed in our cottage for the entire summer and early fall that year. Visit the locations of your favorite scenes from the film -- lake tours are available daily from Holderness Center. Eat lunch or dinner at Walter's Basin in town, named for the movie's famous and elusive lake bass.

A real GEM!
My husband and I celebrated our 26th anniversary here.
The house was perfect. Driving down a private road right to the waters edge. We spent our days boating, swimming, and just sitting on the dock watching the world go by. Hoping for a return visit in 2018!
We love that you decided to celebrate your 25th Anniversary at our lake house! Reminiscent of many family celebrations over the years that we've also experienced at Squam! Hope you can return soon.
If you are looking to relax in a beautiful setting, this is the place. We spent long hours sitting in the sun at the end of the private dock, fishing, swimming and just enjoying the views. The home was clean, comfortable and stocked with everything you need for a great vacation. Take a ride up Mount Washington for some spectacular sights. The Squam Lake Natural Science Center is minutes from the house and a fun day trip for the kids. I would highly recommend this rental to a friend.
Wonderful and Relaxing.
Beautiful cottage on Squam. Hope to stay again soon!

Lakeside cottage is located approximately one mile north of Holderness, New Hampshire, on route 113 on Kesumpe Cove, between Cotton Cove and Shadbush Cove on the map. Conveniently near Holderness Center, but secluded and private accommodations...our private wood road services only 4 family-owned lake houses -- very private, quiet, relaxing atmosphere! Water-ski or sail during the day, kayak or canoe early or late, enjoy the stars at night -- your private dock has room for 2-3 boats and a sandy bottom for best swimming. Just a short ride to the nearby marinas for gas and supplies for your days on the lake. View from the dock is of Shepard Hill across the lake and east to Sunset Rock and further up the lake several miles. Hike the several mountains that ring the lake for spectacular views in every direction. Squam Lake features Sunday non-denominational services on Chocourua Island (Church Island) all summer -- just a 15-minute boat ride away. See where many local folks have been married and where their children were christened outdoors in the natural beauty of the Lakes Region.
Other Activities: New skating rink in nearby Plymouth!
