Wonderful mountain stay with excellent location to downtown without being in downtown!

  • 4 of 5

We went for our daughter's birthday to the Big Bear Lodge and took our whole family. It was a very memorable and run weekend! The mountain cabin experience is definitely worth it and you are within walking distance of downtown but still far enough away to be out of the crowds. Even through the water is low right now, tubing was still very fun for the kids and we ate at Paul's on the River afterwards. Shopping is great in downtown Helen with lots of sweets! The Lodge has a little park by the water that is a great hang out to relax. The owners are fabulous, hard-working people who go out of their way to accommodate your stay and make it a great trip!

Awful!!! The smell was awful, the bathrooms were not clean, hair on toilets, kitchen sink stopped up, banister was loose and unsafe, and the bridge to tree house unsafe, also bench had nails sticking out of it and was unsafe, very unclean dusty And grill blew up in my husbands face, after all this we had to wait to get our deposit back, and because of the grill they blamed the company, even though it had not been cleaned or serviced!!! And there is no inspection being done on property!!! So shame on you, the owners shame on you!!!!

Owner's Response: I checked on these guests ( as I do with each one during stays on our property )I was told that everything was fine- no mention of the allegations listed above. On the third evening of the guests' stay, I received a text regarding the grill incident, and I immediately contacted her with offers of assistance for her husband's care, which she thanked me for, and said that it was not needed. I continued to communicate with them regarding his well being, and even stopped by and had a friendly conversation the following day,, which was their last day left. It was then that they pointed out the loose bench , but no other complaints. A day and a half after checkout, I received a text requesting money back. After providing my husbands phone number, as he handles that end of the business, The guest refused to call him . It wasn't until then that she had the allegations of uncleanliness- no mention of any problems during the stay.. Had they had told me during that time, I would have offered them a different cabin, or they could have checked out and got a refund .She never called my husband to discuss a refund, she just sent a text stating that she was getting a lawyer, and she called the welcome center and wrote this review in an attempt to defame our character and reputation. As a side note- the grill was inspected after they checked out, and it works fine- after consulting a fire chief, it appears as though ithe incident was operator error which caused the flare up.

Great stay for all 18 of us!

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay in The Lodge and The Fisherman's Cabin over the 4th of July weekend. The park on the river is hands down the perfect setting for a group. We had a wonderful time grilling, tubing (very easy access), and drinking beer down by the river. The boys especially loved Cindy's driving range set up. It was my husband's 30th birthday and we were able to all watch a video I had made of all of his friends and family wishing him a Happy Birthday down there too since we had electrical access. It was the definite highlight of the trip! The location is perfect too. We walked into Helen for the fireworks, hung out at a bar after in downtown, and walked home. Half of our group stopped at the go kart place right on the way home and rode go karts too. Tip: when going into town during high traffic times, come out of the road the cabins are on, take a left, and then take an immediate right on Unicoi I believe. There's a grocery and liquor store right there and it takes 3 minutes and no traffic if you go that way. I have no idea how Cindy has the energy to keep us with everything but she manages very well. Side note, she's also absolutely hysterical. She had us all cracking up the second we walked in the door. The cabins are rustic and quirky so know that going in and just go with it. Some of my girlfriends were surprised but they all came around in the end and said they'd definitely want to come back. I think it was nice for us all to get out of our element and be more in touch with nature. The Lodge is where I stayed and will want to stay again but having access to the Fisherman's Cabin is great for grilling and access to the river. It was also perfect for our friends with a small child since he could nap and they were only 50 feet away and had the wifi for their baby monitor so they could keep an eye on him the whole time. The hot tubs are great and very clean, the pool table room at the Lodge was used multiple times, the kitchens have what you need. It's great. We brought a golf cart by the way, which was really helpful in transporting people and food to the river from the Lodge since it's a little steep. Thanks Cindy for all of your help and for going out of your way and hurrying to ship my left behind clothes before she left for going out of town!! She's seriously the best!! She feels like a friend and it shows with all the sweet notes people leave behind for her!

Perfect for Oktoberfest

  • 5 of 5

Bear Creek Lodge was the perfect place for our annual Oktoberfest weekend in Helen. We had 10 adults in our party and more than enough rooms. We highly enjoyed the wonderful, rustic porch and then fire pit! Cindy was easy to work with and very helpful. I am definitely going to keep this place bookmarked for our Oktoberfest annual trip in the future.

Fun for the Whole Family!

  • 5 of 5

The first thing we noticed was the enormous porch. There was plenty of room for our family (7 adults, 5 children). We spent most of our time on the porch, which had a grill, tables, rocking chairs, and sound system (bring your favorite CDs). There were bikes, but we didn't use them.

A rustic, warm, wood-filled home greeted us when we entered the lodge. After children went to bed, our evenings were often spent at the kitchen table playing games that we brought. Tim & Cindy provide some games and they certainly have plenty of books on the bookshelves! If you have a favorite knife or need a crock pot or favorite pan, bring it with you. We did have a problem with the microwave on the first morning, but Tim & Cindy responded with a new microwave the same day. You can often see them around the property, as they own several rentals in the area. They are super friendly and very interested in making your stay easy and memorable. I almost forgot... the dishwasher didn't work and looked like a nuclear accident when we opened it. I guess that might knock the lodge down to 4.5 stars. However, we didn't mention it to Tim & Cindy, who might have done something about it. We brought disposable dishes and utensils, so it wasn't an issue for us.

The funky layout of the lodge is fun for the kids. There are 5 BRs, 4 baths, 1 balcony, 1 screened porch, and one enormous front porch, all on different levels. Don't forget the hot tub and pool table right off the kitchen. The bedrooms are decorated nicely. Adult couples and grandma each had our own rooms and the kids took the Family Room. It didn't feel crowded at all, thanks to a rollaway in the closet. We weren't bumping into each other due to the roomy layout.

Helen. The town is within walking distance if you're in good shape. Since we had children and wanted to do many things during our stay, we drove and paid for parking, which was reasonable. Of course, we went tubing! Tim & Cindy have 9 tubes (I think) that have back rests. Talk about keeping your neck from being sore after holding it up for hours... without a back rest. How nice! They will drop you and pick you up. Money saving and time saving. We also spent time at the communal park by the river. It has a fire pit, outdoor games, and even a miniature golf area for the kids, sort of. We lounged in the chairs, waded into the river, and spoke with people tubing down the river. Relaxing!

If a rustic, slightly worn charm is what you're after, the lodge is the place for you.
