Turn off your computer, set down your smartphone. Reconnect with nature and loved ones in the Shenandoah River Valley at The River House.
Enjoy your morning coffee watching wildlife on the river. Listen to the flow of water and the breeze in the trees. The Massanutten mountain range is in the distance, plan a hike. The river is at your feet, go kayaking. The hammock is strung between the trees, hang out and read a book.
The firepit is ready and waiting to toast marshmallows. The moon reflects on the river. The locusts sing their song. Sit back and relax. Enjoy the cool, crisp fall evenings gathered with your friends/family around the warmth of the fire.
Everything is here, at The River House, to make your stay comfortable and enjoyable. Come! We'd love to share our little piece of the river with you.
We are 2 hours west of Washington DC in Luray Virginia.

Anne Ulrich - I live in northern Virginia with my 2 daughters.
Anne purchased this cabin in 2008
We bought this property so we could spend time here and share it too! Our kids are growing up fast and we realized the need to show them more than the suburban environment they live in. Luray has so much to offer: Luray Caverns, hiking, tubing, kayak/canoeing, mountain biking, campfires, Skyline Drive, not to mention all the stars! It's truly a great way to reconnect with your family and yourself.
There is not one home on the rental market in Luray that has better river views than we do. Our house is 30 feet from the river's edge. Step out the door and you are there!
I returned for another stay at Anne's wonderful home. This time, I had my very chic friend with me. In all honesty, I was convinced she would be whining the entire time, lusting for Saks and Bloomies.
Not even close. She loved the house, loved the river, loved everything - and we actually ended up extending our stay.
Anne was, as always, very gracious and helpful. As great as the house and location is, Anne's hospitality and personality makes it that much better.
The river crested when we arrived - which is a bit scary for city girls - but Anne kept track of the river for us and was constantly in touch, so I actually had fun (especially scaring my friend and telling her we're getting flooded with no way out hee hee).
Thank you, Anne! I will be back every chance I get.
My husband and I took our two small boys to the River House for spring break. The house was more spacious than the pictures let on, and it was nice to have a "home base" from which to visit other sights. The hot tub was wonderful for after the boys went to bed, and we appreciated having the river literally steps from our door. Our meals were enjoyed on the screen in porch where we could watch the water. Anne attended to all of my questions and concerns and answered in a timely manner. Would advise any staying here to make sure to get your groceries on the way in (we went to the Wal-Mart in Luray), as it is a bit of a hike down a dirt road to come back into town. Highly recommend!
Anne is so easy to deal with. We were due to stay at the Riverhouse when the winterstorm was to hit the Virginia area. Anne called us before we had even left for our trip and we agreed to play it by ear. Communication was fantastic and we delayed our visit by a day due to the snow. When we did finally get to the Riverhouse we were delighted! The photos don't do the place justice, it's so spacious! We had more than enough room for the four of us and the kids loved the garden, or meadow as our little girl called it. The house has a lovely family feel, it has everything you need including lots of games, and is in such a beautiful spot. Anne has a great binder of information and we enjoyed doing a couple of the suggested walks in the snow! We really enjoyed our stay, and would thoroughly recommend the River House.
Stayed overnight in February, blessed by unseasonably warm (short sleeve) temperatures, which I doubt the owner can guarantee. But the house was right on the water, at about milepost 12, and is much larger in the interior than the photos suggested. Spacious family room with wood stove, and both indoor and outdoor (screened) dining areas. Would be a nice place for a mixed group where some would like to paddle in--from Bixlers Bridge (12 mi) or Bealers Ferry (3.5 mi) or a really quick 1-mi paddle from Fosters Landing--and others would prefer to drive in. Just tell the drivers that they have to have dinner ready when you get there.
The perfect location for a weekend away...nothing fancy, but comfortable, clean and well-equipped. I couldn't ask for a better place to hang out with family than on the screened porch overlooking the beautiful Shenandoah River. We did some kayaking (provided!), tubing (provided!) and enjoyed a campfire by the river. So private and just a special place! Thank you, Anne, you are very gracious. Hope to return soon!
I'm a paranoid/hyper big-city girl. I'm afraid I don't do nature very well. But at the same time, I desperately needed some peace and solitude. I certainly found it at River House.
A beautiful location, and a very well maintained property. In rentals of this type it's difficult to achieve a balance between rustic and convenient, and this property actually does.
The location is quite remote, and some of the road (not much) leading to it could be called challenging, but it's fine (I drive a Prius and had no issues).
You are actually ON the Shenandoah River. It's not exactly deepwater, but that allows for lots of water activities. The River House is on a good chunk of land, so there is plenty of privacy.
The house itself is significantly larger than it appears. The living room is huge and very comfortable - the furniture seems to have changed a touch from the picture, and now the LR has an enormous sofa and 2 oversized loveseats (sofas, really - they're only loveseats compared to the sofa).
Three bedrooms; while I can't exactly say they're huge, they are certainly comfortable and very well-appointed.
Enormous kitchen with everything you may need, a separate dining room.
And a screened-in porch with a table and benches - my favorite spot, where I speant about 80% of my time here.
There's a hottub, too.
Wonderful outside accommodations - a grill, a large picnic table, a bench right on the river, firepit, and a cement dock (called "The Dome", as I found out) that offers a spectacular view up and down the river.
A separate note on the owner - who wins innumerable accolades for being incredibly gracious woth all my questions and fussing (of which there were a LOT - as I mentioned, I'm a big-city girl, this was new to me).
The house was immaculately clean.
Bugs. I hate bugs. I was very concerned about potential bugs. And there were hardly any. A spider maybe, a few unidentified flying things that minded their own business, and literally 1 mosquito in 4 days. Which is nothing, considering the location on the water.
Perfect for bird-watching, and you'll see quite a bit of pretty fat squirrels.
I honestly can't say enough good things about the property and property owner. Can't wait to come back!
