House, 4 Bedrooms, 3 Baths, (Sleeps 10)
This is a beautiful, custom-built log home located just outside of downtown Seward. The previous owners spent ten years building the house, and cut down and hand-peeled all the logs themselves. It's a true Alaskan work of art, and there's nothing else like it in the Seward area.
We purchased the home in 2007, and live in a small apartment over the detached garage on the property. So, we are around to help with local activities and information and make sure you get the most out of your vacation! We have two dogs that live with us and play in the yard, but are not allowed in the log home.
This house provides a very comfortable home-away-from home while you're traveling, with all the amenities. The full kitchen is there for your use, there are large common areas - a huge slate fireplace surrounded by leather couches, TV / VCR / DVD / High speed internet computer / Wi-Fi / Stereo, a grill and hot tub on the large front deck, a small covered back deck, etc. We now have a washer / dryer for guest use - all brand new in 2017! The house is modern and very clean, but cozy and comfortable. End your day relaxing in the hot tub or grilling out your fresh catch, while enjoying the view of Mt. Alice from the deck.

About Wendy Doughty
We've lived in Seward since 2002, and absolutely love the area and the people! We owned and operated Kayak Adventures Worldwide through the summer 2014 season, and during those years Bear Paw Lodge was run as a B & B. It was a great lodging option for our clients, and others traveling to the area. Now that we've transitioned away from running Kayak Adventures, we've turned our log home into a vacation rental. One of our favorite parts of traveling is meeting all the wonderful people. By living on the property and running the lodge, we're able to bring that aspect of travel right to our own back yard! It's such a pleasure to meet the people who stay here, and to assist them in maximizing their time in Seward. We love the outdoors... and whenever we're not working on projects around the house, you can find us hiking, biking, running, fishing, kayaking, or even strumming our instruments around a campfire. Life is good in Seward, and we hope to share that with you!!
Wendy Doughty purchased this House in 2007
Why Wendy Doughty chose Seward
We were both originally drawn to Seward for the kayaking and the lifestyle. Landing at Kayak Adventures in 2002, we quickly realized how much we loved sharing this backyard with others. That winter we purchased the business, and decided to make Seward our home. We lived in the tiny kayak shop for five summers... sharing the space with many guides, customers, dogs, etc. In 2007, we decided it was time to find our own space. And so we found this log home! It needed lots of work, but was well-built and spoke to us immediately. In June 2007, we moved in and began running it as a B & B.
What makes this House unique
Come stay at the lodge, and in an instant you'll know why we purchased this log home. The quality and beauty of construction, the feeling of warmth and home, the space and light, the deck and hot tub, the location... the list goes on and on. We knew this was the property for us the minute we walked through the door in 2007. We bought the house with the intention of sharing it with others, and it's truly perfect for traveling groups.

An amazing place to stay
The whole experience was great! From the time I booked the cabin for a small family reunion/fishing trip Wendy was in contact with me making sure everything was perfect for us. Upon walking through the door she had made and left homemade cookies for us. The cabin was was beautiful and very comfortable and the hot tub was needed after a long day. We thank you for everything you did Wendy!!!
1st time at Bear Paw Lodge, hopefully not the la
I’ve used VRBO several times now. You know how you see pictures of a property on VRBO and when you actually get to the place, you’re disappointed that the pictures looked better than the place itself? This was NOT the case with Bear Paw Lodge as the house was amazing!
Wendy was awesome…. From the moment I booked the place to when we checked out after a four night stay. She responded to emails almost immediately, kept the lines of communication open, and patiently answered all our questions. Shortly after I had booked the place, Wendy sent a document which clearly explained the “lay of the land” so that there were no surprises as well as another document which listed potential activities to consider while in Seward. After finding out that we wanted to take the Kenai Fjord Tours, she even booked the cruise for us! Wendy warmly welcomed us when we arrived and introduced us to her dogs, Jax and Logan. She let us “do our thing” during our stay and as stated in the pre-stay information she sent, Wendy “struck just the right balance of being friendly and helpful…but not encroaching on our (your) space during our (your) stay.” Wendy definitely provided valuable insight on trails to visit, activities to consider and places to go. Although we did not see Wendy the day we checked out as she had to go to Anchorage, she came by the night before to chat with us and say goodbye.
The property was easy to find and check-in was effortless as Wendy had sent the code to the house earlier. Wendy and Dave obviously take pride in the property and put a lot of care in maintaining it. They accounted for all the needs of their guests – from the nice pots & pans, cutlery and dishes in the kitchen, the grilling tools by the grill, the extra blankets in the bedrooms to the towels in the bathrooms. The cookies waiting for us on the dining table after the drive from Anchorage was an added bonus ….so were the mints by the bed in each bedroom. The house is spacious, very clean and cozy. The living room is very comfortable and has a fireplace that made winding down after a long day very enjoyable. The beds were also comfortable. The house is just a few miles from town if eating out or getting take out is preferred but a Safeway is also nearby if one preferred to buy groceries to cook in the well equipped kitchen instead. The laundry room in the basement also came in handy. Although I didn’t get a chance to enjoy the hot tub, my friends did.
I highly recommend this place.
A Very Nice Log-House at Seward
This neat 4-br log house fits us 4-couples very nicely.
The house is big. The rooms are clean; actually everywhere in the house are clean. The location is very convenient to tour attractions, only ten minutes easy drive to the harbor and Exit Glacier NP. The house is at a quiet street.
There are enough towels in every bath rooms. The kitchen is well equipped. The laundry room has a set of seemed brand-new washer/drier for guest use.
The owners are very nice and always responded to our questions in a timely manner.
We definitely recommend this house to anyone who want to stay at Seward area.
It was great to have you all here, and we're so glad that you enjoyed the space! It's always wonderful to get positive feedback and to know that guests are finding the house to be clean and comfortable! We definitely hope you all will be back again one day... and many thanks for staying with us this summer!
All the best,
Wendy & Dave
A beautiful log cabin that was a pleasure to stay in. Had everything you would need and was so big. Not sure of the capacity, because we were only 4, but a huge number of people could stay there. Easy to find, not too far off a main road and near to town. I would highly recommend!
We're so glad to hear that you enjoyed your time at the Lodge! The maximum number of guests we can host is ten people, so I'm sure your group of four had plenty of room! We hope you enjoyed your time in Seward, and that you'll be back again some day!

Beautiful place, very nice owners. A pleasure to come back to after a day of adventures.
This is a beautiful, hand hewn log lodge close enough to town, and all amenities. Plenty of room for everyone, large kitchen, three baths. Very clean and comfortable. There were no negatives at all. We didn't try the hot tub, but I'm sure it would have been great.
Thanks so much for taking a moment to post a review for us! We're so glad you all enjoyed your stay, and that you found the space clean, comfortable, and spacious. We hope you'll be back again one day!!

An awesome place - a home away from home
I stayed at Bear Paw Lodge with 7 of my family members recently for 3 days and it is an awesome place. Very well organized. I liked the little notes here and there for instructions. The place is very spacious and every one enjoyed the great fire place in the living room. Wendy - the owner - was very helpful in pre-arrival as well. There is nothing bad to say about the place. If I go to Seward again with my family or friends, I definitely stay there :)
It was so great having your group stay with us, and we're very happy to hear that you enjoyed your time at the lodge! Many thanks for taking the time to post such a kind review. We hope you all will be back again someday soon!
