Island Life Paradise - Beach & Bay Home in Gulf of Mexico!

Bedrooms 4
Half Baths1
Space 2,500 sq. ft.
Property type house
Minimum Stay 4 - 7 nights

About the property

Home, 4 BDR, 2.5 Baths, (Sleeps 10), located on Bay Side; Gulf is across Road!

This is your Sweet Home Alabama!! On an Island! "SET SAIL" has a complete wraparound deck (Bay Side is Screened-In!) with french door entrances to and from each bedroom, and water views from all. You have the best of both worlds here - the beautiful Bay with your private beach oasis in your backyard, and the Gulf Beach with waves right across the road! Four large bedrooms - Three with King beds, and the fourth having a set of bunk beds and sleeper sofa. Air-conditioning and ceiling fans throughout! Your kitchen is large and well-equipped. The dining table seats eight, with additional seating at the kitchen bar.

Set Sail has open concept living areas, one side with a fireplace to gather around, and the other with a comfy sofa and brand-new Vizio Smart TV and large circular coffee table for board game playing. WiFi or plug in, you are connected for free! Sit on your decks and enjoy your views of the spectacular sunrises and sunsets! This is a perfect getaway for families and friends, couples and romantics!

Go shelling along the water's edge. Sunbathe on your lower deck, or your private beach on the gentle Bay, which is also great for fishing or playing in the water! The shade pavilion has two hammocks for napping--you're on vacation! An outdoor shower is under your home to rinse off after a fun day on the sand. Grill your fresh fish, crabs or shrimp bought or caught locally, of course. Eat outside, because one of Set Sail's great features is its uncommon screened-in Bay Side deck!

We are pet-friendly, too! Quick and easy access to restaurants, Island activities and shopping. There is a swimming pool/cabana at the local Golf Club, and also a little public skateboard park just down the road, and a putt-putt mini golf center just opened, too!. Dauphin Island is only several miles long and 1 3/4 mile wide at its widest spot! 50 minutes to Mobile Regional Airport, 2.5 hr drive to New Orleans, and a ferry ride over to the Gulf Shores area. Other nearby airports are Gulfport, MS and Pensacola, FL. In addition, the Island has its very own smallcraft Airstrip. A public beach with activities/vendors is on the West End in the Spring and Summer, with monthly Outdoor Concerts! If you visit us in the Fall, it's even more quiet on the Island and the weather is balmy. We have even been swimming in the Gulf in November and February!

Dauphin Island is an unforgettable resort destination, yet without the crowds or fast food chains of other coastal towns--not even a stoplight! It's Country--imagine the Town of Mayberry at the Beach! We have been designated as the "Sunset Capital of Alabama" and it is well-deserved! The Island is also proud to have been designated as a bird sanctuary and dubbed the "Birdiest Coastal Town in America." Our Audubon Bird Sanctuary is not to miss. Visit the world-renowned Dauphin Island Sea Lab's Public Estuarium here on the Island. The Island is rich in history, and was the site of the first French settlement in the southern United States. We have our own Arts & Heritage Council and Gallery here and it is a haven for a great many of the Gulf Coast's well-known artists and craftspeople. You won't walk anywhere on the sand without coming across beautiful seashells at your feet. The clean, shallow emerald water is warm and the birds and waterfowl who inhabit and migrate through are everywhere. Take a fishing charter from the Island's marina, because here, Fishing is King! Hang out at the local pubs! Eat some oysters! Visit the Welcome Center and the Art Gallery while you ride your rented bicycles from one end of the Island to the other!

Set Sail is located on the West End of the Island, and is a large, beautiful newer-built 4 bedroom 2500 sq. ft. home on the Island's exquisite powder white sands, with direct views of the Gulf of Mexico to the home's front, which is just across the road, and the Mississippi Sound (Bay) to its back. The Island is just south of Mobile, Alabama (the actual birthplace of Mardi Gras!) and is accessible by a bridge from the Island's North and an auto ferry at the Island's East.

See y'all at the Beach!!

About Jim & Valerie

We are Captain Jim Cash and Mrs. Valerie Cash, we enjoy boating, traveling, the beach and relaxing! We previously lived in Marina del Rey, California, which is a yachting community at the ocean on the West Side of busy and hectic Los Angeles, only getting to visit our Island home, Set Sail, on occasion, and decided to permanently move to the Gulf Coast almost 5 years ago. Now we are able to enjoy Set Sail more often, when we do not have guests there! The great thing is since we live so close now, we have the opportunity to make sure Set Sail is kept up nicely, and we love that our guests want to come back again and again. We have a terrific vacation property management team right here on the Island (Island Resort Management), and they are exceptional when it comes to hospitality and looking after Set Sail. We care very much about our great beach home and our beautiful Island! We also take pleasure in bragging to our California family and friends that there is not even a single stoplight here on Dauphin Island!

Paradise Found!

Jim & Valerie purchased this house in 2006

Why Jim & Valerie chose Dauphin Island

Dauphin Island is 50 mins from Mobile Airport, and easy 2.5 hrs from the French Quarter in New Orleans. The beaches are incredibly powder white, uncrowded and the water is warm. There is fishing aplenty. A wonderful place for all--families, couples, snowbirds, sportsfishers, romantics. Dauphin Island has been dubbed 'The Birdiest Coastal Town in America.' There is an Audubon Bird Sanctuary Park. And of course, Southern Hospitality abounds.

What makes this house unique

Peaceful beach living! Water views on all sides of the home. Swimming, fishing, sailing, birdwatching, relaxing, local Southern food!

Great place for vacation!

  • 5 of 5

We decided to try Dauphin Island for the first time and without knowing where to rent or which house to rent, we feel very fortunate to have chosen this one. The owners were extremely accommodating and the staff at Island Resort Management were very friendly and helpful. Girlfriend and I were able to take our two dogs, the house was very clean and spacious, as well as nicely furnished. The Kitchen was very well stocked with more than just the basics. Ferry rides, Fort tours, the Sea Lab, are just a few of the things we enjoyed. We attended TWO Mardi Gras Parades. It's worth mentioning that the owner of the home met us at the management office to provide us with folding lawn chairs to take to the parade. Besides the touristy things, we loved just being at the house watching sunsets, or laughing at our dog "Spot" bark at the waves on the gulf side. We loved being able to get steamed shrimp at Skinner's and take it back to the house. We enjoyed other local eateries, too. All of these activities and we still had time to complete a jigsaw puzzle that we brought from home. It is now a part of the games collection at Set Sail for any future guest to build. Thanks Again!!!

Spring Break on Dauphin Island

  • 4 of 5

We spent Spring Break on Dauphin Island. We had 2 families, 4 adults and 5 children and had plenty of space. The house is on the Bayside with no houses very close and provided amazing sunsets. You have a short walk(275 steps) to the Gulf with your own private beach. We loved the wrap around porch which is screened in. We were able to relax and enjoy family time on this peaceful island. The only negatives were the beds, which were hard/loud. We also found lots of black hair on the sheets. As stated in another review, we were guessing the hair was from a dog, as this is a pet friendly home. The overall experience on the Island was just what we were looking for.

Wonderful escape from winter!

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I along with our two dogs and a friend spent an enjoyable nine nights at Set Sail. The house and location met all our expectations and then some. The house is nicely laid out and very comfortable. Like most of the houses in this hurricane-prone area Set Sail is built on stilts so be prepared to climb some stairs.

You can see the gulf from the south deck, the bay from the north. On clear nights the stars are beautiful and catching some sun on one of the many porches or decks was a joy. Dauphin Island is fairly quiet during February and not all the restaurants and businesses are open. That said, the island provides a great starting point for exploring the gulf shore and nearby Mobile, Alabama. When it was time to leave, neither my wife or dog wanted to get in the van.

High time in Alabama

  • 5 of 5

This place was awesome! 4 bedrooms on each corner of the house so each person had privacy. The main rooms- living rooms and kitchen are in the middle. Huge kitchen with all the amenities. The best thing is the gazebo out the back to see the bay and then the porch in the front to see the Gulf. I had never been to the gulf and thoroughly enjoyed it. Be sure to visit the fish market and get some steamed shrimp! this house is perfect for large groups.

Owner's Response: Come back, Janet! We keep trying to make our beach house a home for everyone. I took my family to the same home every summer in California where my kids grew up to a vacation rental and we all made friends for life. Thank you for staying and please keep coming back!

First time to DI

  • 5 of 5

We had a really great time staying here. The beach on the ocean side was a short walk across the street and the sound side was out the screened in back porch. Everything about the house was great. Saw dolphins and got lots of shells. The shrimp boats at night were cool. We had 5 people and 2 dogs and has more than enough room. Looking forward to our next visit.
