Very dirty for a million dollar home and paying thousands a week to rent

I really feel my husband and I were over charged for the condition of this home. The size and the location were great, the outside decks were great but inside, I was sick at the dirt and I mean dirt not just dust that we encountered, truly made me sick.

For the amount of money we paid, I was confident that I was renting a very clean home with upscale amenities.

Please know I'm not being overly picky...this house was disgusting!!!! I've never in my life rented a place like it and we rent a lot down the shore.


Pool should be cleaned after each renter, it was filled will sand and we had no idea if the chemicals had been checked and when.

There were toys and socks around the pool. The toys I put in the shed and the socks I threw away.

The ceiling fans were much caked on dirt. Yes, they came back to clean them with attitude, but said the living room and master they couldn't do.

Carpets in living room and dining room by sliders and kitchen runners were dirty, as well as outside carpet.

Grill was so rusty and dirty and full of grease.

Master shower water control didn't work, my husband went out to by an Allen wrench to fix it.

Light bulbs were out in several places and no replacement bulbs for the ones that were out.

The sofa was so stained it totally grossed me out and thank goodness I had blankets in my car to cover them.

Kitchen stove was gross as well as the trash can all rusted and the toaster all yellow. Corner cabinet off the hinges and the drawer pull was missing off a cabinet. Upper corner cabinet was filled with left over things and it was so dirty and sticky we never used it. In fact we didn't put anything in the cabinets. Dirty paper towels used as drawer liners. Also, 3 dishes put away dirty as well as 2 pans. I had to wash everything before I used it.

Food was also left in cabinets by previous renter. I gave it to the cleaning people when they returned.

Downstairs needs deodorizers, we bought 10 just for downstairs.

Mattress pad in master bedroom stained, totally disgusting. They should be washed and or changed after each renter.

Double bedroom upstairs did not have a tv, we didn't use that room at all

Never found a central vacuum under the stairs as stated in my contract.

Trash can in laundry room never emptied from previous renter. Also, lid broken on trash can.

Owner's Response: And there isn’t an excuse, that’s the bottom line. I will say that being the end of the season this tenant did experience some of these things. The tenants from prior week’s most likely were hard on the house as with most rentals. I am not making excuses. I do insist my cleaners do a proper job of cleaning my rental properties to my tenant’s satisfaction. I understand that people work hard and save their hard earned money for their vacations. So I don’t take it lightly when people complain about the condition of the house. It upsets me that tenants are disappointed. When Kathy called me to say that the ceiling fans where dirty I immediately sent the cleaning company back to the house. Kathy also complained about the condition of the sofa and said that it was stained. I gladly offered to have the sofa professionally cleaned immediately. Kathy declined my offer. As with all my tenants, I only ask that tenants give us a chance to remedy the problems. I was unaware of all the other issues that Kathy and her husband experienced. You must also understand that during the season, cleaners do a “turnover” cleaning. They don’t go into the cabinets, rewash the dishes and pots and pans, throw out dry goods etc… The cleaning company’s job is to give you clean bathrooms, floors, bedrooms and kitchens. There is a small window of opportunity to clean these houses in between tenants. The cleaners do their best. And if they miss something, they will come back to fix it. I’ll see to that and make it right. If there is a loose handle, I’ll have our handyman address it, if there is a light bulb out, let me know etc… I just have to know about it. These houses are rented back to back throughout the summer. The pool is cleaned each Saturday and Wednesday, so I’m uncertain as to what Kathy is speaking of. According to my service provider, USA Pools, the company was out to clean the pool that Saturday upon their arrival. This is the first that I’m hearing differently through this review. Could we have done better, certainly. The last two tenants had zero complaints. I’m hoping this doesn’t discourage anyone from renting. We honestly do our best. And as you see from the calendar for 2017, we’ve rebooked for next year… Please also note regarding the pool. On September 2, 2016 the east coast experienced a storm from Florida to Connecticut. Although the vacationers were not required to evacuate the area, there were rough surfs and high winds.
