Spike's Place is located in a small cove with a southern exposure and magnificent 'million dollar' view overlooking the main channel, the Hales Ford Bridge, Smith Mountain and the Bridgewater Plaza just below Bouy Marker R 30. This waterfront unit is one of two in a unique triplex (See Kathy's Place, VRBO Listing #218590) situated on over 2 acres in a single family residential subdivision. A convenience store is 5 minutes away; and grocery stores, restaurants, shopping centers, marinas, boat rentals, movies and the State Park are all within 5 to 30 minutes' drive - some by car and some by boat! The small protected cove is ideal for swimming, fishing, floating, kayaking, canoeing and paddle boating with easy access to the lake and only 2 minutes from the Bridge by water, which has restaurants, miniature golf, game room, gift shops, realtors, etc. and our Chamber of Commerce.
Spike's Place is a ground level lakefront unit totaling 1400 sq. ft. All rooms are spacious and comfortably furnished. It has 2 bedrooms with a connecting bath. One bedroom has a queen bed and a twin bed. The other bedroom has a double bed and a twin bed. The large great room has a dinette, full kitchen, living room furniture with a new 42' HD Flat screen TV with BLURAY DVD Player. DirecTV HD Platinum Package includes HBO, CINEMAX and SHOWTIME. Wi-Fi High Speed Internet and local telephone service are also included. The kitchen is fully equipped with stainless steel cookware, 17 cu. ft. refrigerator, microwave, blender, toster and coffeemaker. The unit has cleaning supplies, vacuum, ironing board, iron and hairdryer. The tiled patio has wrought iron furniture, a porch swing and a hammock under the trees.
In 2010, we tiled the dining/kitchen area, bathroom and outside patio. New carpet was laid throughout the living area and bedrooms. New vertical blinds were hung. A new countertop, cabinets, glass top stove and microwave were also installed. We also replaced the recliner chair.
All bed linens, bath and kitchen towels along with toilet paper, dish soap, trash bags and courtesy soaps are provided year round EXCEPT FOR THE SUMMER WEEKLY RENTALS. SUMMER WEEKLY RENTERS MUST BRING THEIR OWN BATH AND BEACH TOWELS. The other items listed above will be provided.
There is a dock/patio area, diving board and a large floater dock with electric, water and fish cleaning stand. You will have shared use of 6 kayaks, a paddleboat, canoe and sandy beach. The dock has access by stairs or golf car ramp. A complimentary golf car will also be provided for your exclusive use (adult drivers only!) during your stay for access to the dock and beach.
We are Pet Friendly provided you have a crate to contain your pet when necessary; your pet is currently in a flea treatment program 60 days prior to your arrival; and you clean up after your pet. There is not a leash requirement on our property provided your keep your pet under control. The neighborhood is 'casual' and cats and dogs do wander onto the property at times. A $50.00 fee per pet will be charged for extra cleaning to keep the unit and yard neat and clean. Any major damage done by your pet will be repaired and billed to you.
There is 'No Smoking' inside but ashtrays are provided on the deck and dock areas outside. Please do not throw butts in the year, driveway or lake. Thank you for your cooperation.
Our rentals are self-managed, cleaned and maintained directly by us, the owners, Captains Spike & Kathy Franceschini of Spike's Prime Time Fishin'. We and our boats are on premise and available for charter. Please see additional web links on this site.

About Capt. Kathy Franceschini
We started 'Spike's Prime Time Fishin' in 1988. Spike and I are striper charter captains with two 22 ft. deck boats. We purchased the triplex to offer fishing charters and waterfront vacation rentals to our clients and to anyone who enjoys the water like we do. We tried to put the amenities we liked best in all of the places we have traveled and stayed into our fishing and waterfront vacation rental business.
Capt. Kathy Franceschini purchased this Townhome in 1989
Why Capt. Kathy Franceschini chose Moneta
We chose our triplex immediately for the magnificent view! We also chose it for close proximity to stores, etc. and Route 122. It is near the Hales Ford Bridge, which gives us close access to Bridgewater Plaza and local marinas. It also puts us halfway on the Roanoke River side of the lake, which gives us excellent access to fishing from the Dam to the headwaters the year round. We have deep water under our docks but also have a small shallow water sandy beach.
What makes this Townhome unique
A golf car is included in your rental. We have shared use of 6 kayaks, a paddleboat, canoe and sandy beach. There is great fishing off of our docks. Situated on over 2 acres, we are surrounded by large white pines which give a 'compound' effect for privacy. There is plenty of grass for putting up our volleyball/badminton/croquet sets. A large paved driveway is wonderful for skateboards, bikes, rollerblades and sidewalk chalk. We also live on a dead end street and keeps traffic to a minimum, good for walking and biking.

Beautiful Views and Excellent Host and Hostess!
I recently spent a couple of nights at Spike's Place. I took my Chesapeake Bay Retriever and I don't know which of us enjoyed the trip more!!! Kathy and Spike were so accommodating and the rental units are very clean and have everything and anything you could need! The landscaping is beautiful and the views incredible. The added amenities of kayaks, canoes, fishing charters are my reason to return in the summer months!
Thank you, Kathy and Spike, for sharing your piece of paradise with myself and Miss Mollie!.
It was our pleasure to have you with us here at the lake. We thoroughly enjoyed getting to know you personally and it was great fun watching Miss Mollie swim... almost to her heart's content. I don't think she would get out of the water ever if you didn't make her stop to eat! Your enjoyment and praise is a great compliment as you also live on a lake and rent to guests at your B & B in Greensboro. We hope to get to Twin Lakes and enjoy your hospitality as you enjoyed ours!
I had sent my deposit but was not able to attend the dates I had originally booked. Owner was great with communication and even returned my deposit without question. I plan to book here and actually stay!
We try and work with you as much as possible and depending upon the circumstances. We look forward to having you with us in the future.
Spike's Place could not be better, nor could the hosts in providing the most congenial of vacation spots. The decor is most tasteful, the kitchen well-equipped, the sheets, towels and bedding of exceptionally high quality and comfortable; landscaping, interior and exterior are well maintained, pleasant and charming. There are even spices in a cabinet and instant coffee in the 'frig' which I think can't be more accommodating. My 5-year-old granddaughter caught her first blue gill off the dock, my grandsons many and my son was thrilled that Spike put him on 15 strippers, 4 of which they could keep, filleted and packaged by Spike. There was everything for water fun: a raft, inflatables, balls, all sizes of life preservers, noodles and 3 types of watercraft, everything in top condition. The fine beach had a stone-surrounded fire pit, logs available for a fire. It can't get any better than Spike or Kathy's Place for a lakeside vacation in VA; I can't say enough good things about this spot, or the experts at fishing the lake that Spike and Kathy are, friendly, outgoing, there to provide a delightful experience to boot. It just doesn't get any better.
Elizabeth - First, I want to sincerely apologize for not responding to your "awesome" review sooner. I was so "bowled over" by that you really got what we are all about here at the lake that I took time to think about my response. Then with renters, fishing, computer down, etc....the normals of life...I lost track. You "soooooo" described what our goal to do here is! It is what we strive to provide for our clients and so glad that your family took 100% advantage of all we have here! Your review will hopefully get across to future renters what we are all about. Again, thank you. Your family gets a "10" for enjoying all that is here to the max! I hope you have a wonderful summer and look forward to having you with us again in the future.
Your new friends, Kathy & Spike
SIMPLY THE BEST!
Spike and Kathy's place has it all! A beautiful view, comfortable accommodations with all of the amenities to keep everyone happy. They have a huge yard for outdoor activities and if you are fortunate to be there during garden season, they even share their delicious fresh veggies :) There are docks to relax on and fish from and a nice sandy beach for the young ones too. There are plenty of noodles, tubes and floats for hanging out in the water as well as a paddle boat and kayaks; and lets not forget relaxing in the hammock next to Spike's apartment, too. There are lots of steps (100) down to the water, but if you don't want the exercise, they will provide you with a golf cart for your convenience. Though I stayed in Spikes apartment this time, I have been coming here for over 10 years and have also stayed in Kathy's place with many of my family and friends. You will find both places equally comfortable and Kathy's place has a great game room, too!
Kathy and Spike are two of the nicest, most gracious hosts you will ever meet. They both charter fishing trips, so if you get the opportunity, book a trip for some fun striper fishing! They are pros and are always willing to share information and tips for fishing on the lake. :)
Thank you, Kathy and Spike, my friends, for everything. Can't wait to see you next year!
This is one of the most relaxing vacations we have had in a really long time. The wiew was fabulous and it was such beautiful weather while we were there... Not one day of rain. We really enjoyed just lying around the dock and reading and just soaking up the serenity of their place. Also the beds were very easy on the back and that is very important for Mike. Thank you both so much for a wounderful time and next year we will have to do some fishing. Again THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Mike and Edie
This was one of the first times in a long while I've been on vacation and honestly was in no hurry to return. It is just that fabulous of a spot. I agree with the previous reviewer that the pictures do not begin to capture how beautiful this location was, but then again, it was nice to be so "wowed" upon arrival.
We were thankful that we could bring our dog, and that we did not have to lug our own kayaks and canoes, which are generously made available for use during your stay. In addition, it was nice to see such a happy and thriving vegetable garden despite the hot hot days we've had this summer in Virginia, and even nicer that you shared your tomatoes, bell and hot peppers and cucumbers.
We vacationed at Spike's Place with our teens; two of them love urban areas, and one is a beach fanatic, but all were happy to take in the sights and sounds of SML. It was a very harmonious visit overall, and given a unanimous five stars by all five members of this family, as well as our sixth: we even got our dog to go kayakking with us one morning!
The only things I'd recommend adding would be a laminated tutorial for the television for the technically illiterate like ourselves (though we DID find the 24-7 soccer channel!) and maybe a way to reduce the A/C. However, those are such minor things, and all the more reason to get out and enjoy the porch swing, hammock, dock, beach and water.
We'd never been to Smith Mountain Lake before after a lifetime in Virginia, and we were delighted to swim in a place with no jellyfish, no sharks, and no rip currents or traffic jams, unlike the large resort beach my husband and I grew up near. We hope to return again soon. Many Thanks, Kathy and Spike!
Thank you for such a wonderful review! It "wowed" me also when we first looked at the property. It only took me 30 seconds to tell the realtor it was "sold!" It is great to know that you enjoyed yourselves at the lake like we hoped that you would with our setup, location and toys. We love seeing our renters use it to it's fullest and you did. I'll see what I can do about the tv system and remotes. With tv and receiver changes, they never all work the same! Drives me nuts too. Other than closing the vents on the ac, which I hoped I told you to do, and/or opening the windows, I can always lend you my electric mattress pad (which I adore in the winter and has 2 controls for each side of the bed), some more couch throws or a sweatshirt or two! Again, thank you for the great review and taking the time to write it. We'd love to have you stay with us again. Kathy, Spike & Buddy
