Grandma's House in the Woods, 3/4 mile to Custer

Grandma's is my folks retirement home just south of Custer, a converted pole barn on five wooded acres, wrapped by another 5 acres of wooded County easements. Plenty of parking for trailers and toys, one 50 amp RV hookup adjacent to house. Quiet subdivision road provides a nice place for an evening walk, or you can stroll down to the golf course. Easy access just off the highway, about two blocks of smooth dirt road, and one garage bay available for parking in case of hail. A large front porch for sitting and relaxing and for watching the deer, birds, turkeys, and cottontails, or just sitting with your morning coffee or afternoon cold drink. Weber gas grill on front porch. Side patio on south side of house. Sleeps up to 8, dog friendly. High speed fiber optic internet, bedroom AC units, full kitchen, commercial W/D, lower level handicap accessible including main bathroom and master bedroom. Minutes to Custer State Park, Crazy Horse, Mt. Rushmore, Mickelson Trail just across the highway. One mile to restaurants, shopping and gifts, pharmacy, grocery store, service stations. Trail rides, fishing, boating, hiking, helicopter rides, and adventure vehicle rentals and bicycles close by. Property backs up to Rocky Knolls, our local municipal 9-hole golf course. Lots of room for croquet or badminton. Game table in loft. **(NOTE: I'm currently residing in my tiny home/camper 30 yards from house at NE corner of property while repairs from the winter wind and hail storms is ongoing, and while addition of upstairs 3rd bathroom and other major property projects are being completed. For 2026-2027 season, second bathroom is located a few steps into the garage and labeled "Outhouse." Construction is halted during summer season. My quarters are arranged for total guest privacy so you have complete run of the property, I can't see or hear you, I value my privacy too! I'm a commercial driver and am often away from home. If it's necessary to water porch plants or maintain yard areas, or for my petsitter to stop by, etc., I'll let you know in advance and/or ask your permission. I try to schedule any visit when guests are out touring for the day. I do NOT enter the house unless the guest asks me to do so.)**

We had a lovely stay at Grandmas House. A very clean comfortable house. Vicki made us feel very welcome. Communication with her was great. She even had fresh eggs in the refrigerator for us when we arrived.

Vicki was an amazing hostess. Great communication. Grandma's House was clean, comfortable, and familiar. It was close to the things we went to see. Loved the flags and the early morning deer grazing in the yard.

Our stay at Grandmas house in the woods was the perfect location for us. Just a few minutes to town and close to Custer state park. We enjoyed lots of hiking, seeing Mount Rushmore and driving the needles Hwy. Vicki was excellent with communication. We loved the fresh eggs she gave us. She even provided our dog with clean stainless food and water dishes. We would stay again

We enjoyed the quiet set back property. The front porch is amazing’ Large well supplied kitchen and very roomy bathroom. We were there for the Sturgis Rally and it was nice to come back to a quiet neighborhood for the evening. There are numerous good choices in the area for dinner, our favorite was the Sage Grille in downtown Custer.And do not miss the pie shop in Custer. Beautiful riding in the area! Our host was very sweet.

This place is big and has a lot of room to spread out. The kitchen worked well and it has a new Weber grill that worked great for grilling a meal at home after eating out for many days in a row. The table can seat six for a meal and we removed a couple leaves to set it up as a card table at night. We saw deer eating in the yard in the morning and evening. The deck was nice for sitting out with coffee in the morning.The place is dog friendly and it has carpet throughout that was old. The furnishings are dated and it is cluttered with a lot of stuff.There is only one bathroom which makes it crowded in the morning.The host was very easy to talk to and helpful when we had questions. We had a good time during our stay.

We had a great 5 night stay with our Heeler Reggie. We had deer every morning and evening with crows daily. A new propane grill on the covered porch was awesome as we grill a lot!The host was great to visit with and allowed us to use one stall of the garage, which is a huge comfort when the afternoon storms pop up! Plenty of parking for trailer and side by side.We love our coffee so a single cup Keurig or a coffee maker are available, there were plenty of pods for our needs.There is a trail right behind the house which is great for a quick walk through the pines.We had a great time and would stay again. Thank you!

Just do it (: This VRBO is an absolute gem and in a perfect location. The location and home were both better than I was anticipating. Lot's of privacy and room for kids to run around outside. 5 minutes max from Custer Town (groceries, dinner, gas stations) but you feel completely tucked away in the wilderness. The home genuinely feels like a Grandma's home. When I say that I mean it in all the best way's possible. It was warm and inviting as if I'd been there before. I've stayed at a fair share of VRBO's. I've never had a host be so kind and considerate. When she found out this reservation was for a student trip, she offered to leave us fresh eggs which was just the cherry on top of her kindness. Great communication and a very quick and easy check in process. I would 100% stay here again. If your goal is to have a get away and be close to countless hiking trails in Custer/Black Hill's. This VRBO is perfect for that. There were several times when the older students just sat on the rocking chairs on the front porch watching the wilderness and soaking up all the nature. I can't thank our host enough! (:

Very nice property, very suitable for bikers as well with ample garage space for several bikes. We grilled every night on a very nice BBQ grill provided as well. We have booked for another vacation later in the year !!!

Grandmas house is the perfect place to stay on your trip to Mount Rushmore and all the attractions in the area. Prime location. The house was perfect and comfortable. I did have issues with checking in but that was not the fault of the host or the place. The host was very attentive and made sure we were comfortable. We will definitely stay there again on our return trip.

We had a delightful stay at Grandma's House in the Woods. The check-in and check-out process was smooth. The home was clean and comfortable. The owner replied quickly to any questions that we had and had a repair person on the property the same day to fix one small problem with the internet connection. She contacted me about one item I left at the home, and made arrangements to mail it to me. We enjoyed the amenities and the location was lovely outside of town in the ponderosa pine forest. Would highly recommend to other guests considering a stay.

This is our second time staying at Grandma’s. It’s a great location just a short distance from town. All the amenities are as advertised and Vicki is a very responsive host. We can’t wait to go back!

Very clean and great communication. When I booked the room the description said handicapped assessable and I also asked host. The bed on the main floor is not handicapped assessable (way too high). It was teh only bedroom on main floor that mom would’ve been able to use. My mom had to sleep on the recliner all 4 nights. Also the description never mentioned that the garage was full of stuff, the upstairs bathroom was under “remodel” and the host lives in camper 30 years away. Just didn’t seem very professional. Although the host was very nice it was very uncomfortable that she was right there with us. The property has three campers on it and quite a bit of clutter in the back. The garage door code was changed durning our stay without any notification or reason. Price was good and the location was very easy to get to and central location to all the sites so that was great.

This property was described as a 3 bed 3 bath space. There was only one full bathroom inside the actual house. The second bathroom was located in an attached garage outside the living area. There was no 3rd toilet at all. There were folks living on the property directly behind the house, so you are not alone there. We were in Custer for a funeral and the location worked out perfectly for us however. The host was attentive to concerns we had but a few problems noted were never actually resolved. Overall I wouldn’t recommend this property.

This is my folk's retirement home, Custer being where most of my mom's family relocated to from Gregory, SD, about 1947 to oversee the CCC camp here, Camp Custer. My folks met in Wisconsin where my dad was born and raised, but we moved to Southern California when I was ten months old. Summers here were heaven for a city kid who had tons of cousins and I rode horseback, went berry picking, fed cattle, learned to drive caterpillars and logging trucks. My mom loved company and loved to share the peace and beauty of the Black Hills with her family and guests. Being one of 13 kids, mom loved having bunches of company. I love to share the place too with couples and families and groups of folks who like to relax where it feels homey rather than stay in motels while traveling. I love to share the place with people who are surrounded by city life the rest of the year. I named it because my precocious only child was speaking in complete sentences by the time he could talk; he never talked baby talk. If we planned a trip, he would ask "Are we going to Grandma's house in the woods, or Grandma's house in the city?" So Grandma's House in the Woods just stuck. :)

Por qué escogió este alojamiento

My folks loved this place because mom could be near her numerous relatives and their families, dad could be close to a golf course, and mom could feel as though she lived in the country, but they were able to get to town quickly and easily. My Mom, who grew up on Laura Ingalls Wilder's stories of the frontier, referred to the place as her "Funky Little Pole Barn in the Big Woods." The front porch was her first additon to the house. :)

Qué hace que este alojamiento sea especial

Even in the Hills, it would be hard to find a place this close to town and the Park and the Monuments that is quiet, secluded, and wooded acreage that feels as though you're out in the country. Especially an entire home at a price comparable to a single hotel room in town.
