Why Lonnie/Gigi/Tioni chose Hawaii

The Mauna Kea Beach Hotel is our favorite hotel on the Kohala Coast. It has kept the old Hawaii charm and feel. The Villas are not overbuilt (like many of the other resorts) with lovely, large trees and lots of colorful plants. There is usually music and hula at the bar around sunset and the beach is the best on the island. The Hapuna beach is quite nice, as well. The short walk down the street to the switchback path that goes by the driving range makes it easy to go back and forth to the hotel or the beach from the villa. It really adds to the relaxing atmosphere of the place. We also like the location of the resort as it is the farthest north, so it rarely gets the vog (volcanic fog) and a drive to Waimea, Kawaihae Harbor, or Hawi is a quick one.

Mauna Kea, Kohala Coast, Big Island, Hawaii, USA (Mauna Kea Beach Resort) -- The Villa sits on Imaka Place just off Mauna Kea Beach Road on the hotel/ocean side of the highway. It faces north with a view of the ocean towards Maui. It is an easy walk down a footpath at the bottom of Imaka Place to the hotel and the beach.

Great house, location and owners!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here over our kids' spring break. The Mauna Kea has the best beach I've ever been on. The kids had so much fun and it's way less crowded and stuffy than the four season. The house is a perfect location with plenty of space, super clean a great view and a pool to boot. I only wish we stayed longer! The owners were great to deal with and made our stay fantastic.

Perfect in every way

  • 5 of 5

The property is lovely. It is situated close to the beach path and the hotel. The condo is spacious, clean and comfortable. My family has stayed here a couple of times and each time we return we love it even more. We like to hit the local farmers markets, fish market, bakeries, and wine store and eat most of our meals at this stunning location. The house is well stocked with cooking utensils and dishes. The owners have good tast - from the art work to the Hawaiian CDs in their music collection. The owners are very nice and super easy to deal with - they are very flexible and accommodating. This is a perfect place for teens - they like the pool and easy access to the hotel with ping pong, hottub and perfect beach. We did a lot of swimming at the Mauna Kea beach - and enjoyed swimming out to the raft the hotel has anchored off the shore. We always enjoy a night at the Blue Dragon in Kawaihae - 10 minutes away - an open-air restaurant with fun bands and dancing. We have traveled to many places and this is one of our very favorite places. The place has a good balance of luxury, comfort, activities, and peace.

Wonderful stay with beautiful view and private poo

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I, together with our daughter and her spouse, had a wonderful 10 day stay in this beautiful villa overlooking the golf course and Pacific. Our hosts very nicely left breakfast food for us upon arrival after an extremely long day of travel from the east coast and called our first morning to confirm all was in order. The only issue we had was the pool which needed to be cleaned but that was taken care of in a few hours. We could walk to the beach (incredibly beautiful) where we spent almost every morning and had most of our meals in the villa which has a very well equipped kitchen. We did have one breakfast and one lunch at Mauna Kea which was very good but expensive. This was a very good location for us to attend all the wedding festivities in Hawi and to have our grandchildren visit from another condo. They loved the pool which was just the right depth for a tall three year old.

We would definitely recommend this villa to a friend or relative. Only wish it were closer to the east coast!

Owner's Response: Aloha and mahalo for the lovely review. So glad the grandkids liked the private pool! Yes, it is a long way from the east coast, but once there, it is worth it. We hope you come back again.

Great stay on the big island

  • 4 of 5

Great location to one of the best beaches in Hawaii, Mauna Kea. The home was spacious and clean, the small outdoor pool was not heated but great for kids who can't wait to jump in. It was about an 7 minute walk down to the hotel, about 10-15 when walking back up the hill depending on heat and time of day. The hotel had ok amenities, this location is all about access to the beach. We got to see manta rays at night from the pathway which was cool. Only downside of the condo was that the main road to the hotel was right in front so there was a steady stream of cars coming up and down the road during the day and evening. Also, we just happened to get some really windy days, the condo took the brunt of the wind so the umbrella and swimsuit were knocked over, we also picked up a lot of wind noise while sleeping in the master at night. Still a great place overall. If staying in the area, bring your own food or prepare to pay 5 star prices for 3 star food.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review. We have had higher winds this season and the Mauna Kea sits in a spot along the coast that gets these winds. Usually, it is not a problem. We agree the beach is quite lovely. We are happy you enjoyed your stay. Mahalo.

A Fantastic Villa

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time here. A couple of points for prospective renters:

- The location is ideal. A very short walk (~5 mins) to the hotel meant that we never had to use the car.

- A ton of space. Our family of four had plenty of room to spread out and feel like we were home (albeit with a much better view!)

- The owners were fantastic. Any questions were immediately addressed, so we had complete comfort while there.

We would absolutely re-book. It is a great spot.

Owner's Response: Mahalo for the lovely review. We love our villa and do find that the ability to walk to the hotel and the beach adds a lot to the experience of being on vacation. The Mauna Kea beach is the best on the island and the hotel is delightful. Please do come back. We like happy guests. Mahalo.

Quiet and relaxation at the Villa

  • 5 of 5

Staying at the Mauna Kea villa means a week of quiet and relaxation. The view from the villa out over the Kohala coast and Pacific Ocean is spectacular, and inside the villa is comfortable and serene. Large spa-like showers, a wonderful, fully stocked kitchen, and plenty of water sport items to borrow. The beach at Mauna Kea is a short walk and one of the best of all the Hawaiian Islands, for snorkeling, swimming and reading in the comfort of a chaise lounge. The harbor nearby has some great restaurants, a short drive up to Waimea for more, plus farmer's markets and other shopping. I completely recommend staying here!
