FAQs

Getting to Islita

If you are driving from San Jose expect to take between 4 ½ to hours from the Airport to the Villa, if from Liberia between 2 ½ and 3 to hours from the Airport to the Villa.

Car rentals are very close to the airport. Liability Auto Insurance is mandatory and the typical platinum credit card insurance does not cover. Check with your particular policy and be sure if and what is covered in Costa Rica.

Recently the country has become very serious about speed limit enforcement so don’t speed and be careful because the roads are narrow and passing opportunities few.

It is much easier to drive in the daylight -generally 6AM- 6PM all year.

Commercial Air service is available from Nature Air http://www.natureair.com/domestic-flights-schedule.html

An Air Charter is also available and takes about 40 minutes in a small plane. If you need to arrange a charter or want a quote I can assist with that. Please call me immediately so I can assist you. 715-330-3465.

Groceries/shopping

Islita is a very small. There is a very small grocery store called a “Pulperia”

which sells a wide variety of basic food products as well as limited wine, beer, soda and juices, frozen foods and various sundries. Botton line you can find many emergency items however you should not rely upon the pulperia to fully stock the kitchen. There are a number of regular full-size grocery stores on the route most notably in Nicoya. We can provide directions to find those places along the route. Typically that is where we stop to buy all normal grocery items. The hotel will usually sell you high-quality meats and fruits but you need to give them at least 2 weeks advance notice. We will provide contact information to make that happen.

There is a small gift shop at the hotel which has some clothing items, candy, shaving items etc. It is best not to expect that you can shop for any necessary items there.

Catering. Chef services

We are independent of the hotel but all of the hotel services are completely available to you. All of the hotels restaurants, pools, activities are available to you. This includes catering services as well. This can be arranged with the hotel and is generally available except during the Christmas/New Year's season when they simply do not have the staff to accommodate private parties at all.

What's available in the Villa

Mariposa is completely furnished, has all appliances, bedding, towels, utensils. Other than food and alcohol you need to bring nothing but yourselves and a good attitude.

Washer/dryer/laundry service

We have a washer and dryer for the use of our caretakers. We do not generally provide laundry service although the hotel will do so. In an emergency our caretakers can do some light laundry for you but you will need to negotiate fair compensation for that service. Because of the cost of electricity, the scarcity of water, we simply cannot make the equipment generally available.

Bugs and Critters

Islita is in the dry forest, this means that you almost certainly will not have trouble with mosquitos. On the other hand, this is the great outdoors and that means that you may see an occassional scorpion, pizotes, growler monkeys, iguanas birds, etc..

Dont leave food out, close the kitchen windows and doors when you are not there. DONT intentionally feed the animals.

We always fluff the towels and sheets before using them.

Upon arrival at the Punta Islita

The front desk of Hotel Punta Islita takes care of checking in, providing the keys to the Villa, setting up a charge account for all hotel services. We have a caretaker and property managers who will take care of any maintenance or other issues. You may call Isaac at 8771-1860 or Abraham 8302- 8129 for any issues that arise.

The front desk of the hotel is generally open from 8 AM a.m. to 10 PM so that if you were going to arrive at a time outside those hours we would need at least 48 hours advanced notice so that special arrangements could be made. Anyone in the hotels Front desk and concierge departments can and will be helpful to you but your special point of contact is the guest services manager Marvin Seas. Besides being extremely helpful and efficient, Marvin speaks English spectacularly well.

Just before you arrive at the hotel you will make a 90° turn to the left and proceed past the golf course for about 500 m. There you will see the gated entrance to Hotel Punta Islita. When you stop at the gate tell them you’re coming to Mariposa. They will direct you and you can follow the signs up to Hotel Reception. They will check you in, provide you with keys and set up a hotel charge for any Hotel meals, activities, spa etc. They will then either take four direct you up to the house. Please be sure that they instruct you on the operation of the security system and show you how to disable it.

Villa Matters.

We take considerable care to be sure that everything is in proper working order but this is a actually a very harsh climate for mechanicals. The sea air, wonderful to us can be murder on appliances, furniture, etc. If you see anything which is not functioning properly please immediately advise our caretaker, Isaac, Abraham or email me at jam10bam@gmail.com.

About Jim Morrison

We came to Islita the second year the hotel was open, immediately fell in love with it and the people. In fact we were the second independent property owners here. The corporation that we set up to own the real estate is known as”WFA Islita”--- and stands for” We finally agreed !” because after 25 years of marriage and vacations of all sorts we found the place that was unique beyond compare.

Jim Morrison purchased this villa in 2005

Why Jim Morrison chose Guanacaste

As many of our guests have said, Mariposa has the best view of the hotel- in fact one of th best views in the world.

Absolute paradise!

  • 5 of 5

From the opening of the front door we knew we had arrived in paradise. The view was spectacular not to mention the accommodations were equally as nice. The staff was tremendous and very gracious. We have stayed in Punta Islita numerous times but this was by far our favorite stay overall!

We will definitely be coming back to villa Mariposa ♥

Thank you to everyone for making our stay so wonderful.

Amazing view and amenities

  • 5 of 5

This was our 5th time to Punta Islita. We've stayed in traditional rooms and 2 & 3 bedroom villas. Mariposa 🦋 is large and in charge! We loved the outdoor living area for lounging as a family and swimming. Each bedroom had a full bath and the master had a lovely outdoor shower. Jim's pricing is extremely competitive to the hotel. I highly recommend this rental.

Great get away

  • 4 of 5

This was an awesome getaway for some friends from San Jose. Great view of the Pacific Ocean. Everyone was so nice. From Abraham, even thought we only saw him once when he showed us the house, to Issac who was around doing yard work, to even the cleaning crew. It was like seeing our own family here at the house when we met all the people who worked around the house to make your stay comfortable and enjoyable. Will go back in a minute. Also the facility in the hotel is awesome. We ordered a cake for one of the nights and they comply with our request without a hesitation. It was awesome. The local grocery store is just a moms and pops place. But they are very helpful and are willing to accommodate your request. I ordered a Flor de Cana 18 years and within hours they went and got me a couple of bottles. House was immaculate. Ice machine was not working. But we in province, we made our own.

Pictures simply don't do it justice!

  • 5 of 5

From the moment we contacted Jim about Mariposa, the entire experience was beyond what we expected. He provided us with tons of information about the home and surrounding areas and even arranged transport from the airport. The drive from the airport (Liberia) was beautiful and an adventure in itself as a few of the roads were a bit treacherous (but never scary). A few bumps on a dirt road are well worth the breathtaking view of Punta Islita from the house. Absolutely breathtaking - that's all I can say! We enjoyed time relaxing in the beautiful pool while watching the macaws fly by, and we were blown away by the phenomenal service of the staff at Punta Islita. Everyone was so incredibly kind and accommodating. We waited too long to book a golf cart, but my family is pretty adventurous and enjoyed the challenging walk. I would definitely suggest booking a golf cart early if you are not fond of a steep climb on a paved road. Thank you for everything Jim! It was a 40th birthday surprise that my husband will treasure forever!

A vacation in Paradise that you can share with family and friends

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I had the recent experience of sharing a vacation at Mariposa with some friends and made new friends while there. We cannot say enough about this beautiful home and setting where we enjoyed this luxury vacation with friends. This home is designed well to accommodate anyone's need to enjoy a wonderful vacation. We weren't even home before we started planning our next vacation to Mariposa. Our experience was to have the amenities of a luxury resort but still have the comfort and security of being in our own 3 bedroom villa on the top of the mountain overlooking a beautiful ocean and hillside. To walk from your bedroom into the outdoor living area and then step into the swimming pool which overlooks the Pacific Ocean is an experience that is hard to define. We did prepare some of our own meals at Mariposa which was easy to do with furnishings and amenities provided at this Villa. We took daily trips down to the resort beach and the resort restaurants which provided great food, spirits and personal service from the waiters and staff. The beach was gorgeous--so was our daily swim in the Pacific Ocean. This is all walking distance from Mariposa. We were able to meet the local people in the village. It is a daily event to see the Macaw birds flying over the Villa or mountainside. My wife and I have experienced other luxury vacations, however this one, for our return, is on the top of our "bucket list". This is an experience that I want to continue to share with my family and friends. I would encourage anyone who has the opportunity, to do the same, you will always remember this special place. Villa Mariposa and Hotel Punta Islita with its beach is a perfect place for everyone, no matter your age, sex or gender. The only requirement is to enjoy life, living, and the people you want to share this great experience with as a chance of their lifetime. WE WILL BE BACK SOON!!!!

A Hidden Gem

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here a little over a week in mid-December and had a great time. While at the Villa, we spent most of the time in the pool either taking in the ocean and mountain views by day or stars in the crystal clear sky by night. We cooked dinner and breakfast a few times and the house was equipped with everything we needed. Its affiliation with Punta Islita Hotel is an added bonus. The staff at the hotel took great care of us and ended up being one of our favorite parts of the trip. They were overly hospitable. Would recommend having a car as it makes it very easy to get down to the hotel's beachfront pool or the local restaurant. Look forward to returning to Mariposa one day.
