About Joe Pisko

Sandie and Joe are from Haddonfield, New Jersey. We drive 6 3/4 hours to return to our true home, Salvo on Hatteras Island.

Joe Pisko purchased this house in 2005

Why Joe Pisko chose Salvo

Sandie had never been to the Outer Banks and I hadn't been here in 20 years prior to our vacation. Before we finished that week we were hooked and knew we had to find a place here we could call home.

What makes this house unique

The raw beauty of the surf and the sound, fishing, boating, birding, watersports, family gatherings, stargazing, campfires, the weather, the wind and the SUNSETS. Enjoy the sunsets from your own 200 foot pier, they are worth the wait, each one different, beautiful and amazing.

Great family gathering place in a beautiful place with plenty of privacy

  • 4 of 5

Located at the end of a row of houses, this is a great family gathering place that offers roomy and well-appointed gathering space as well as privacy, many amenities, kayaking from the dock, and good bird and dolphin watching in the surrounding water and wetlands. The large, open top floor of the house, with plenty of glass and a deck overlooking the ever-changing light of the sound and spectacular nightly sunsets, is a very comfortable space for large groups to spend time together. Members of the group who want a break from the action will appreciate that each bedroom has a private bathroom, and each bedroom floor has its own wet bar with refrigerator. The middle floor has a fairly comfortable sitting area; we felt that the lower level had room to add some comfortable upholstered seating and lamps in addition to the billiards and table and chairs there now.

There is something for everyone in this house, and any elders or disabled in your group will appreciate the entry ramp, elevator, wide stairs, and wide hallways. The kitchen, with duplicate appliances and good circulation, is great for group meal preparation.

A full-service grocery store is only 20 minutes away in Avon, and for those who favor a locally owned market with a better selection of gourmet ingredients, Connor's is just another 10 minutes south from there. A public access to the beach on the ocean side is a 10 minute walk from the house through a quiet neighborhood.

The owner of this house is very gracious and responsive. He quickly addressed a problem with the hot tub by sending a repairman the next day. The house did, however, have a few problems that we consider minor compared to other large, fairly new houses in which we've stayed on the Outer Banks. We purchased light bulbs and batteries because there were no spares in the house to replace burned out bulbs or to re-supply remotes with dead or missing batteries. A couple of televisions worked properly only some of the time even after we implemented straightforward instructions from the owner. In the kitchen, the well-used cooktop had some functional issues, and the downdraft hood did not work at all, which caused those engaged in serious cooking some concern. These were relatively minor issues that would not prevent us from renting the house again. All in all, our family ranging in age from 9 to 90 greatly enjoyed our stay!

Owner's Response: Thank you for renting our property. We always appreciate the feedback. It is amazing how often the remotes need new batteries or they are missing. We start every season with a battery check. Normally, renters will notify me and I have a local handyman who will follow up with almost all requests to keep the property up to date. Batteries and bulbs are an easy one. But thanks for taking care of that problem. We also started the season with all new electronics in the living room and theater room and new cable boxes and remotes in all the bedrooms, game room and second floor lounge. Based on your feedback we swapped out the multiple remotes, (tv, cable, surround sound amp, cd/dvd player), for 1 universal remote. Much better. I was unaware of the cooktop down drat hood issue, but that is now also resolved, with a new switch. Once again we thank you and look forward to your next visit.

Lots of room, well equipped

  • 4 of 5

The facility is very comfortable and I cannot find fault with it. There were a few minor annoyances, the most memorable of which was the fact that the beds were unmade on our arrival. The service which supplies the linens dropped off fresh linen and picked the soiled and left. We made up our beds. Mr. Pisco was most helpful in resolving this and a few forgettable minor issues.

The main problem derives from the fact that grocery stores, restaurants, etc. are concentrated at either end of the peninsula, which is about sixty miles in length. Depending on the number of people in your party, more than one vehicle will be needed. The restaurants we went to were good, but their menus were remarkably similar: crab cakes, shrimp, oysters, flounder, etc, and usually a beef steak of some sort.

Were we to go back, we would give consideration to renting a place near or in Buxton on the southern end of the peninsula, or Kitty Hawk to the north, because of the proximity of cafes, shops, etc., along with beaches boat charters, etc.

That said, you can't really go wrong if you are meeting up with a compatible, flexible group

Owner's Response: I am glad you enjoyed your stay at Windy Daze. It was our pleasure to have you as a guest. The linen company should have asked if you wanted to pay a minimal fee for making the beds. I am sorry that they failed to do so. I hope you tried some of the excellent local restaurants including the Atlantic Coast Cafe, Watermen's Bar & Grill, and Top Dog, which are just around the corner. You are correct that the location is more isolated than the areas you mention and that is precisely why we love it. Most guests will stop at the grocery store while on their way at the entrance to Hatteras Island. The town of Avon, 16 miles south, also has a large food market. Thanks for staying with us and we hope you will keep us in mind for future visits to the area.

Map

Hatteras Island is a barrier island located off the North Carolina coast. Dividing the Atlantic Ocean and the Pamlico Sound, it runs parallel to the coast, forming a bend at Cape Hatteras. Hatteras Island is the perfect combination of natural world and vacation world.

If you love being outdoors and in nature, you will love it on Hatteras Island. It feels like a real island retreat. The vibe here is much different from the northern Outer Banks even though it has many of the same vacation offerings. But Cape Hatteras on the whole has a much more laid-back attitude, probably due to its popularity with outdoorsy types and the water sports crowd. It’s more relaxed, a little simpler and definitely slower paced
