Madison 3 BR Cottage on 3000 acre Lake. Kayaks & Pontoon

Bedrooms 3
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 1 - 7 nights

About the property

Cottage, 3 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 3 Baths, (Sleeps 8)

The 'Boathouse' doesn't shelter watercraft anymore, but it does provide a wonderful home on the shore of 3000 acre Lake Kegonsa. It is located at Crown Point Resort in a country setting, but is only 15 minutes from downtown Madison Wisconsin, 20 minutes from the airport, and 2 hours from Chicago's O'Hare airport. Lake Kegonsa (lake of many fishes) is one of the four large lakes starting in Madison and is generally unknown and uncrowded.

The cedar sided Boathouse is at water's edge, three levels of spectacular, never ending views. The top level has the master bedroom, queen bed,2 twin beds, and a full bathroom. Walking by the Weber charcoal grill and crossing the deck takes you into the middle level, with living and dining areas,a gas fireplace, washer/dryer,full bathroom, and a well stocked kitchen. Plenty of pots and pans, dishware, dishwasher, micro, coffeepot, etc. The bottom or lake level has one bedroom with two twin beds, and another bedroom with a queen bed, and a full bathroom. All levels have great sunrise over the lake views. There is a big screen tv in the living area and 2 smaller ones in the bedrooms. WiFi is free.Central air and heat throughout. No pets are allowed.Located at rated #1 Crown Point Resort, the Boathouse also has the VRBO highest rating.

Bring your boat! There is a long pier right out the door that provides bumpers for tie up. The boat launch is 5 minutes away. Gas and bait are also close. For our guests only, we rent 2 small fishing boats with motors,a 9 person pontoon boat, 6 kayaks,4 single and 2 doubles, and a paddle boat. As we don't have a sandy beach, most everyone swims off the end of the pier and swim raft. The lake bottom is rocky or sandy. No drop offs or muck. We have other size lake cottages for rent. Call any day 8-6.No pets are allowed. This is not a party house. No bachelor or bachelorette parties.

Madison has been recognized as one of the premier places to live. The best farmers market in the US, outdoor music, free zoo, art fairs, and great restaurants are minutes away. Our little town Stoughton, has one of the largest Norwegian communities settled in the country, and offers a historic downtown with art and antiques, shopping, and festivals.

Perfect Location! Beautiful Lake!

  • 4 of 5

I stayed at Crown Point Resort with five girl friends this summer and we had a blast. We were steps away from the water and the dock. We spent every morning sitting outside on the deck enjoying the beautiful lake. We rented the pontoon boat several days, used the Kayaks almost everyday, rented the fishing boat and fished everyday. It was truly the ideal location. We only left our cabin a couple of times for supplies. Frank the manager/owner was super. He's very helpful and friendly. He even pulled us behind his speed boat a couple of times during the week on the giant tubes. If you want to fly into a major airport and be at a lake in 30 minutes this is the place to be. It was only 30 minutes to get to the airport and be in downtown Madison from the resort. There are plenty of grocery and drugstores, ace hardware etc near by.

The only word of caution is there are a lots of stairs. For us the stairs were totally worth it once you got down to your cabin because you are right on the water with parking up on top of the hill. If you have an elderly parent or other disabled family member it could be a problem.

If you're looking for a lake vacation book this place now you won't be disappointed.

Great experience in a well equipped cabin!

  • 5 of 5

If your idea of fun is vacationing on the edge of a lake and hearing the water waves lapping at the rocks on the bank as you sleep, look no further. This resort is like a hidden gem. The photos of this place do not do it justice.

The owner, Frank, is very friendly and helpful. He is available when needed but does not hang around and make a pest of himself. Thanks for being such a good host, Frank.

The 3 levels of the boathouse allow the guests to view the beautiful Kegonsa lake. Our extended family spent 6 nights in the boathouse and never felt crowded yet were able to hang out all together in the living room with a place for everyone to sit. We were also able to seat 8 at the dining room table the night we had guests over for dinner. The kitchen is well stocked and appliances work well.

If I had to make a suggestion the only recommendation would be to possibly use some type of "black out" drapes in the living room as the closed mini-blinds do very little to hold back the heat in the morning. However, we were not hindered at all by this. Thanks for making this rental available. Our family enjoyed our stay immensely and will be returning.

Great property on a great lake!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I were looking for someplace closer to home to get away for a long weekend. We found Crown Point Resort on the VRBO web site and just had to check it out. The pictures don't do it justice. Our cabin was very clean and well-maintained. We had a gorgeous view overlooking the lake with our own deck to enjoy. The owner was super knowledgeable about area activities and restaurants. I would definitely recommend Crown Point Resort to family and friends!

Loved This Place!

  • 5 of 5

My family and I currently live in Singapore, but decided to come back and visit the US this past summer. As we live a very urban daily life, we wanted our two kids to experience cottage life and found this cabin on VRBO. We spent a month here, splitting our time between this cottage and the other 3-bedroom cottage that is a bit up from the lake, and found that both cottages exceeded our expectations!

To start, the cottages were both extremely comfortable and well set-up, especially the kitchens. We found that they had everything that we needed to cook at-home meals all summer. They both came with air con, though we found that the ceiling fans were enough for us. The beds were very comfortable, there were more than enough bathrooms for everyone and we loved having washers/dryers right in the cottage.

The lake is beautiful and there are enough activities to keep us occupied- we recommend renting the kayaks and the pontoon boat. There are also adult bikes for rent that looked great. Our kids loved the sandbox/swing set/slide area that is available for children staying in the resort.

The location is amazing! Stoughton is a small, charming town and the city of Madison is only a 20-minute drive. If you have kids, there are some amazing places to take them: in Stoughton, there is a man-made swimming lake and beach called Troll Beach, which our kids loved, as well as a very nice public library with a great section for kids and a petting zoo nearby; Madison has a fantastic children's' museum, and the Wisconsin Dells are an hour away. If you like shopping, there are two outlet malls that are both within an hour's drive.

Frank, the owner, could not be nicer and he was so helpful and kind to us during our entire visit. He is always available when needed to answer questions or give advice on places to visit.

I cannot recommend this place enough, and we hope to return and stay again in the future!

A Secret Jewel on the Madison Chain

  • 5 of 5

I have stayed at Crown Point Resort for opening weekend of the Wisconsin game fish season for years. I typically have traveled with a group of 12-15 fishing friends and have experienced a true family atmosphere. The on site owner is committed to doing anything to make your stay the best. The cabins are immaculately clean; kitchens are fully equipped; and the docks are well maintained and accessible. If you are looking for a place to stay that will never disappoint, Crown Point Resort is the place to stay.

Wonderful cabin for ice fishing, relaxing, or both!

  • 5 of 5

My dad, brothers and I had a guys weekend planned out for this weekend and wanted to find something a bit off of the beaten path. This cabin was perfect for all five of us. Plenty of room for relaxing in the main living area with a formal dining area for food or to play cards. The beds were comfortable and the cabin was clean upon arrival. The kitchen was fully stocked with dishware and cleaning supplies. The best part was being able to walk out the door and directly onto the lake for easy access ice fishing.

The only downside for those looking to watch cable tv is that the signal is not high definition. The tv is an HDTV and there is a dvd player available as well to watch movies. Being a tech nerd I had to point this out, though this is likely a minor gripe for most and didn't impact the enjoyable nature of our stay. It would have been the cherry on top of the sundae if the cable signal was in HD.

Overall, a very enjoyable experience was had by all. The owner is extremely helpful and willing to point you in the right direction for food and groceries. We would definitely stay here again if we are in the area!

About Frank

I have enjoyed 30 years of fun on Lake Kegonsa. I came to Madison for college and decided to live here!

Frank purchased this cottage in 1986

Why Frank chose Stoughton

I have always loved living on the water. This is still a not very crowded lake with the big city amenities nearby.

What makes this cottage unique

There are never ending lake views. I can jump in my boat and be fishing or waterskiing in minutes.
