Exquisite grounds located on a private road NOT part of a development or multi-home estate. Privacy is important to us. A traditional house entirely remodeled, new roof, new tiles, new floors, new walls, bathrooms and efficient air conditioning for bedrooms--situated in a lovely tropical garden and lawn with palm trees and a giant panama tree, about 170 by 250 feet in surface-area, with many tropical birds, and an occasional iguana strolling across the lawn. All the rooms with great window-doors views and the kitchen as well look out onto the ocean; the rooms are connected by way of the covered terrace which wraps around the entire house, no interior corridors; the beach in front of us -almost a mile!--is empty much of the time, ie almost private, and accessible through our beach-gate just 10 steps down.. An exceptional feature of the property is the twice-weekly maintenance and cleaning we provide for you by a highly trustworthy couple. Extra cleaning beyond the two days provided can be arranged at renter's expense.

We have installed a deep well so that house and garden are supplied with fresh water and not dependent on town supply pipes -- important since droughts are not unknown in Panama. All appliances are only a couple of years old. Wireless internet is excellent (the maximum available in Panama), although with electrical outages in Panama there are occasional interruptions. Please note that the land-line telephone only calls out to local numbers; you need a four-band cell phone otherwise, and your provider must allow roaming. Chips for cell phones are for sale everywhere for $10, only 'Moviestar' is no good!

I am a writer/artist, from New York. My wife and I come here just 3-4 months a year, take excellent care of the property year-round. Every season we are here my wife plants more flowers and shrubs and with the help of our professional gardener it has become an exquisite place to stay.

Why Marie Helene chose Panamá Oeste

Peace, swimming in wonderfully warm (but not too warm!) water, perfect (dry! almost mosquito-free!) weather, none of the storms and hurricanes you get in other parts of Central America, or the very strong winds other places in San Carlos and Coronado have at times because the house is located in a cove protected by cliffs on each side. Unbelievable view (you have to see it to believe it! the entire ocean and cliffs on each side), a friendly people and very safe area.

What makes this house unique

We buy fish at a fishermen's beach--when the fishermen come up from their boats with the baskets of fish, buying directly from the fishermen-- five minutes drive from our home, a local brings us shrimp; we have mango trees on the property. We have peace and pure pure air.

We have the great good fortune of almost two kilometer of beautiful beach in front of our property. This is not common at all- at a kilometer to the left and a kilometer to the right the beaches are packed with rocks and unwalkable and unswimmable unless the tide is really high! It should also be noted that the 40 or so kilometers of the area on the pacific where it is situated is known as the 'arco seco' , the dry arc, ie when it is pouring in Panama City there is just a shower in El Palmar. Also, no mosquitos! very few insects (abundance of birds drawn by our little swimming pool); as soon as you go back into the country, away from the ocean front there are plenty of noisome insects, but none here. Even in the rainy season, all we get is a half hour or so of rain, then sunshine again. The apartment is thoroughly cleaned before arrival of guest and must be returned thoroughly cleaned. Therefore there is $32 cleaning charge.

Not only the beauty of a seafront property but domestic care

My wife and I loved this tropical garden right on a kilometre of Pacific beach- five steps down to the beach! But most surprising and unusual in a rental property, a middle-aged very reliable and competent Panamanian couple came to the property twice a week to maintain the property, do cleaning of the house, remove the garbage etc. A real plus!

We really enjoyed our stay in this beautiful property. The weather was warm and perfect and the sea was as well. The beach in front of the property is almost the only strip which is rock free so swimming was great. The property was very clean and looked like it had been recently done up. The beds are very comfortable and the air-conditioning worked perfectly. The large doors have large windows with screen so we could have them open in the night if we wanted the cool sea air, which made us feel very invigorated in the morning. The view was magnificent and we enjoyed sitting at the table by the pool, drinking a glass of wine while watching the sun go down. With any luck we will be back next year.

Privacy and Beauty all in one

Best holiday we ever had. We didn't know what to expect from Panama but staying in this beautiful place on the private roads was better than anything we could have hoped for. We were delighted that the owners hadn't put up a big wire fence on the beach front as the other house have-- they have a low (60cm)elegant venetian type railing and a wire fence the goes out semi-vertically so is invisible to the eye. This made the view of the sea and the flying pelicans spectacular. Surprisingly the beach is almost empty except on weekends so it was as if we had a beach to ourselves (black sand as the area was volcanic) which is sandy and goes out gradually so great for long swims.

The house was clean and very comfortable with hardly any insects. Wonderful to be in a tropical garden in a warm climate and away from the cold -- too bad we couldn't stay longer.

Paradise on earth

I had a wonderful stay. The situation right on the beach is exceptional. The house has a beautiful garden with luxurious vegetation. The house very comfortable and decorated with taste. I would be happy to renew my vacation there.

I don't know where to start. The place has never been updated. Everything was dirty. Plumbing was horrible. Could not flush toilet paper. Microwave didn't work. This was not described correctly. Only part air conditioned was the bedroom.

Owner's Response: I m really surprised. I talked to the guests on the phone the first day of their arrival and they told me everything was fine and that they were enjoying themselves. We update the property every year. That was done last March. This is an typical Panamanian house and with the humidity in Panama the disintegration is much more rapid than in the states or Europe. Unfortunately it rained almost everyday they were here, which must have been disappointing. We arrived the day of their departure and except for some of the plants having died we found the place clean and a delight. The microwave does work it just was unplugged. In Panama it is normal to avoid putting paper into a septic tank system and the people here wash with small showers attachments which are beside the toilet with soap and towels. Much more hygienic and ecological. Of course the metal work begins to rust within months by which may have given them the impression the place was not being looked after but we repainted every year. We have a couple who come in twice a week all year round to do the maintenance and look after the place so it is hard to believe the place was dirty and they said they even cleaned up several times while these guests were here. Our caretakers said the guests left the place in terrible mess and had not emptied the garbage or washed a dish their whole stay. That is easy to deal with but the sheets and pillow cases and towels were covered in some kind of orange dye that is impossible to remove (they will have to be replaced). I guess it's not possible to always have appreciative guess and as much as i can understand their disappointment to be here a week and have four days of solid rain(very unusual- normally short warm showers this time of year) I can not take the blame for the unfortunate weather which must have been very depressing. .

Our stay did not start well. On arrival at dusk and in the rain we found that apparently due to an accident the vast majority of the lights did not work. There was one light working and some power sockets worked which was confusing. We were told this would be fixed soon. After a tortuous conversation with the local representative who speaks very little English and not knowing how long 'soon' would be we decided to take the option of staying in an apartment a few miles away until it was fixed. There was no working flashlight or other backup lighting available otherwise we may have opted to stay.

This somewhat tainted our opinion of the property but after careful reflection I still cannot fully concur with all the previous rave reviews. For instance some say that the house is ‘modern’ and ‘luxurious’ which it is not. What it is really is a well loved and used family home. This has the advantage of having additional features associated with home living but the disadvantage of having particular quirks which take some adjusting to.

There is only one television which does not receive good reception and also a DVD player but a very limited supply of DVDs. Being forewarned we brought our own. However these units are located in bedroom 1 which makes communal viewing difficult. On the plus side the wifi works really well all over the property.

I am surprised that given the area is said to be safe nobody mentions the excessive security measures built into the property. The additional fencing and barbed wired detract from any views of the beach. The gate to the beach has corrugated plastic sheeting on it making it almost impossible to lock or unlock it from the beach side. But worst of all are the horrid heavy thick barred sliding doors to each of the rooms. During the day they can be heaved open but at night they need to be closed to keep out the bugs which means you confined to a virtual prison cell and have no contact with your fellow inmates in the other rooms. The main attractions are supposedly the views and sound of the ocean but these are not so great to wake up to when seen through iron bars.

Given that the majority of the occupants are likely to mainly speak English it would seem appropriate that the local representative should speak this sufficiently so that they can deal with problems effectively. The current representative speaks virtually none. All our dealings were with the owners in France who responded promptly.

Owner's Response: Electric cuts are a problem in Panama when branches fall on the lines and it normally takes a few hours to fix them. I think our caretaker did rather well by offering them a luxurious apartment for the evening. I think, to expect a Panamanian over the age of 35 to speak English is a bit exaggerated -- Panama is not America or England -- it is a third world country and people should take that into account. Things don't work as smoothly as we are use to in the first world. In Europe people over 35's don't often speak English and English people often don't speak anything but English, and we are happy that Ricardo speaks as much English as he does. He waited an hour and a half for these people to show up (their bus was late) at the taxi area to take them to the property because they didn't want to rent a car. He then arranged to pick them up the next day when the electric problem was solved and for his trouble got not so much as a thank you. The only criticism i can make of Ricardo is that the electric fans and flash lights were not charged up but maybe they were disconnected by the previous guest and he didn't notice. It is true that Panama is a reasonably safe country but petty thievery does exist and Panamanian do like to have their property secure, but to say that the barbered wire prevented a view of the sea is totally untrue!!! The fence on the sea is designed to be below eye level 60 cm or only 2 feet high as anyone can see from the photos. The large open work iron doors all have windows that open wide and are completely screened on both sides of the room -- so no insects can enter if one wants the sound of the sea and the air blowing through the room instead of AC. We did say the TV reception is bad but everyone now gets their news on internet and everything is set up on our television system for Netflix and amazon films so if you have a computer you don't need more. We called these people the following morning and explained everything to them and called again when the electric was fixed to say Ricardo would pick them up. I'm glad our usual guests are more adaptable and understand that in a third world country they can not expect everything to be exactly like their own home comforts in Europe--whatever they happen to be.
