Cottage on Magical Lake Sunapee

Bedrooms 3
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 7 nights

About the property

Cottage, 3 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 6-8)

Lake Sunapee is one of the largest, cleanest and most beautiful lakes in New Hampshire (Lake Winnipesaukee fans will tend to disagree here). Lake Sunapee is also known for its serenity and often referred to as the “sleepy” lake. If you’re the “partying” type, this is probably not the place for you.

Built at the turn of the century, our house is almost 100 years old. We do love a bit of comfort ourselves, so we've worked hard to retain the simple, rustic atmosphere without sacrificing too many modern conveniences. The house is a lake front property. What makes it a bit unusual, however, is that you access the property from the front of the house, which means there is a small road to cross to get to the water. You might want to keep this in mind if you have very small children. There is virtually no traffic to speak of, but we still wanted to point this out. There are four bedrooms in the house, but for the time being we’ve closed off one of them to our renters to store our personal belongings (when they built houses 100 years ago, closet space was not a big priority).

Another special feature of the house is the turret and two of the bedrooms are actually located in the turret itself. Both of those rooms face the water. To get to the bedroom on the top floor of the turret, you have to walk through the other bedroom in the turret. In addition there is no door at the top of the turret stairs, so as beautiful as the turret rooms are, privacy is limited if both rooms are being used. The two turret bedrooms have queen size beds. The third bedroom now has two beds: a full and a queen.

Our kitchen is fully equipped with everything you need to cook a delicious meal. There isn’t a microwave over or a dishwasher. There are two bathrooms, one upstairs and one downstairs. The one upstairs is only equipped with a bear-claw tub, which may be used but climbing in may not be convenient for some people. At the front of the house, there is a screened-in porch and in the back of the house a stone patio. On the waterfront we have both a deck and a dock. The dock itself is not a stationary dock and only about 25 ft. long and 5 ft. wide. On a quiet day, boats up to 19-20 feet may be docked on it for a few hours at a time. The wind can come up very quickly on Lake Sunapee. Depending on the intensity and direction of the wind, a heavy boat tied to the dock could pull the dock right up off of its foundation. Several years ago we finally purchased a boatlift. We kindly ask you to let us know ahead of time if you plan to use the boatlift.

The swimming in Lake Sunapee is awesome! Access into the water is via a small set of stairs to the left of the deck. The depth of the water at the shoreline is about 3-4 feet, but it does get deep rather quickly. The bottom of the lake is rocky in spots although there are enough smooth and flat rocks around to allow walking into the water. There is also a public, sandy beach just down Lake Ave. (2-3 minute walk).

Our house is located in an area on the lake referred to as Blodgett's Landing. Not only is it unique to any other place on the lake, it is rich in history. It has been reported that “the beginning of Lake Sunapee as a summer resort may be dated in 1875 when a man named George W. Blodgett built the first cottages or leased the land upon which they were built in the area which became Blodgett’s Landing. Prior to the cottages, however, came the camps with tents.” It is said that this is why the cabins erected later were built so unusually close together. By the way, the early group of visitors, who are said to have left a lasting impression on the topography and personality of the landing, were the Spiritualists of New Hampshire. The “Lake Sunapee Spiritualists” began holding their annual Camp Meetings in Blodgett's in 1877. There is a quiet end as well as a busy part of Blodgett's. We consider our house to be located in the quiet part of town. As much as we crave solitude when we get away on vacation, we’ve never once regretted our choice to buy property in “Blodgett’s”. In a sense, it offers the best of both worlds; privacy and community. Blodgett’s, by the way, is on the “gold-coast” of Lake Sunapee, which means the sunsets are awesome. Everything else you need to know about the house and the surrounding area, you should find in our listing. Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any further questions or need additional information.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Welcome to our home on Lake Sunapee. We just put our house back on the rental market after a two-year break. In the meantime, unfortunately our guests comments were deleted. I summered on Lake Sunapee as a child, and resumed that tradition when my own kids were growing up. I cannot think of a nicer place to be. Please make sure you read the narrative on our listing. And feel free to contact us if you have any questions. Hope to see you soon! Best, J. Guyer

Best Sunsets

  • 5 of 5

The location is fantastic and the charm of the old house will captivate you. The sunsets are spectacular!

Pros: property fits the description provided, nice and responsive home owner, great location, large living room, large dinning room, character of an older home, very clean, well equipped kitchen, friendly neighbors, great sunsets, nice deck overlooking the water that gets sun from sunrise to sunset, nice and responsive property manager, swimming, boating, local attractions are near by, not too far to grocery store, lake front property is fantastic, nice screened porch over looking lake as well as deck on the lake, back patio, wonderful breeze coming off lake cools the house in summer, lake water was warm in August. The house is perfect for 6 people.

Cons: if you are looking for luxury, this house is not for you. It is an older home with no dishwasher, no air conditioning (you won't need it with the wind off the lake) and no washer and dryer- but don't let that deter you, the house is clean, has character and is in a great location. If you have very small children you just need to be aware of the road between the house and the water (it's not busy) and that you need to go to the public beach if you're looking for sand and/or walk-in access. The house is great for kids over age 6 or so. Parking is limited at the house (3 cars max) but you can have guests park in another area only a short walk away.

I would rent here again in a heartbeat. It was the most relaxed I have been in a long time.

Lake vacation

  • 5 of 5

Our stay in this turreted Victorian was delightful. The cottage was cozy and attractive, with comfortable beds and a well-equipped kitchen. This is a perfect spot for children and adults who love swimming, as the lake is just a few steps from the door. Both the porch and the waterfront deck are inviting spots, and we enjoyed the kind of New Hampshire lakeside vacation I remember from my childhood. The Sunapee area is attractive with many activities and convenient access to shopping and other services.

The cottage has a rustic feel and may not be suitable for people who do not appreciate cottage charm and the minor inconveniences that accompany this (ie, no in-house laundry or dishwasher)..
