History buffs, culture vultures, and those just seeking R&R will naturally gravitate toward our sleek, sun-filled apartment in centre of this picturesque village (see photo link) above Devil's Bridge in the foothills of the Pyrenees Mountains in the south of France. In the early 20th century, the village served as an artists' mecca for the likes of Picasso, Matisse, Braque, and others. Beach bums might want to look elsewhere, although the Mediterranean is about 30 minutes away for a day at the beach or even a leisurely seaside dinner. Other swimming options include a lovely lake with beach and snack stand about 10 minutes away or the town's swimming pool (beside the public tennis courts). The village has retained its traditional character, with locals gathering on park benches to chat or watch other townsfolk playing boules. At the same time, village squares are surrounded by restaurants offering fine French cuisine and good local wine. Cafes and gift shops are tucked into the narrow lanes leading off the squares. On Saturdays, there is a colourful weekly farmers' and artisans' market. Cultural festivals celebrating the Catalan heritage of the region take place throughout the year -- the cherry festival being one of the highlights. Still largely undiscovered in comparison with nearby Provence, this region is known for its brilliant sun under bright blue skies and its temperate climate.
Our south-facing apartment is on the third floor of a small building with a convenient elevator/lift. In terms of mod cons, it has TV, WIFI, clothes washer and tumble dryer, ipod speakers, and air conditioning. The apartment overlooks a quiet historic square, quiet except for market day on Saturday when you can look down from our bistro table on our patio and watch shoppers linger at the fresh produce and crafts market stalls below. One of our favourite things is to wake up in the morning and gaze from our pillows at our neighbours' tile rooftops against the surrounding foothills, with a bright blue sky capping the scene. We love our 'Appartement Ciel Bleu' and think you will, too.

About Elaine Koerner
We live in Washington, D.C. This apartment is our little slice of heaven we escape to when our schedules permit.
Elaine Koerner purchased this Apartment in 2010
Why Elaine Koerner chose Céret
The village of Ceret is near a major autoroute and has local buses to many destinations and yet it feels far away from the hustle and bustle (see photo link). From a distance, you can see the village set against the foothills of the Pyrenees, with a beloved mountain peak called Canigou presiding over the scene. To enter the village, you cross the River Tech and climb up to the centre ville, where our apartment is located. Even though there is so much to see and do in Ceret itself, vineyards, olive groves, castles, other historic villages further up the valley, and the Mediterranean in the opposite direction are not far away. Frequent buses go to Perpignan and other villages. Ceret's location in the foothills of the Pyrenees, but also close to the Mediterranean and not far from the Spanish border, makes it ideal for either staying put or venturing out. A local 1 euro bus goes to many nearby destinations and connects to train stations.
What makes this Apartment unique
We chose this apartment because it is cheerful, sun-filled, and located in a quiet historic square that is just steps from bustling cafes and shops. The apartment itself is in a well-maintained building with an elevator - no schlepping up and down endless flights of stairs with suitcases or groceries - and has a magnificent view of village rooftops and the foothills of the Pyrenees Mountains from its sunny south-facing windows with balconies. All the amenities are modern and yet the facade of the building is in keeping with the historic character of the square. No fuss, no muss, just settle in and relax in the apartment, or step out the door to all that a traditional French village has to offer. The apartment is modern with white walls and ceiling and very light and bright. It's well laid out in that the bedroom looks out onto the balcony which has a view of the rooftops and foothills so your first sight when you open your eyes is this amazing view. The living, dining, and kitchen area are open and create a feeling of flow and spaciousness. Each floor to ceiling window has a small step-out balcony where we have placed some lovely French pottery.

A little gem
We enjoyed being able to walk out from the apartment into ceret which had everything one could wish for. Good food shops, market, museums, restaurants etc.we enjoyed the many hikes in surrounding countryside and used bikes to cycle the ' voie vert'
Hi, Sheila, We are so glad you enjoyed your stay in Ciel Bleu and were happy about its convenient location in centre ville. We haven't yet had a chance to explore the voie vert on our bicycles but based on your recommendation we will definitely check it out during our next stay. All best wishes in your travels, Elaine and Michael
This wonderful apartment has the most exceptional view to the hills of Ceret and the streets below, particularly on market day. A cosy well equipped home away from home in the centre of beautiful Ceret. Can't recommend it highly enough - it was our second stay there
We're so happy you enjoyed your second stay at Ciel Bleu. We're especially glad that it feels like a home away from home. Our warmest wishes for future travels and adventures.
A very special town. Great view. Lovely market.
Excellent value and location
This is the second time we have stayed in this apartment. We first came here more than two years ago and loved it for its convenience, location and overall appeal. When we decided to return this past September, we didn't hesitate to rebook. We weren't disappointed. The apartment was exactly as we remembered. Clean and extremely well maintained. The huge amount of maps and other information about Céret and surrounding area was all up to date. The apartment's local management agency continues to be responsive and helpful. This time the weather was better, allowing us to spend most of our time on the small balcony overlooking the busy square. We love Céret and intend to go back, hopefully to the same apartment.
Heavenly Ciel Bleu
One can practically touch the heavens from the balcony of this wonderful apartment. Ciel Bleu lacks for nothing as is evidenced by the rave reviews from those that preceded us. The location is perfect, the apartment is spotless and the internet lightening fast. Wonder of wonders, there is even a separate tumble dryer as opposed to one of those combination things that hold one's clothes hostage for at least six hours.
The care and concern with which the owners treat their guests is extraordinary. I cannot imagine the time it took to put together the binders and the user manual. Nothing has been left to chance.
Little things mean a lot when traveling...the rubber mat In the shower, a shower that does not flood the entire bathroom, a clean sponge in the
kitchen ,a well equipped kitchen, good lighting for those of us who still prefer to hold printed matter in our hands, the wifi password in advance so one can copy and paste...I could go on and on.
My husband spent many happy hours observing the neighborhood from his perch on the balcony. Indeed, there were days when it was hard to get him to leave the apartment. What shines through is that Ciel Bleu is a home and not just an income property. The owners obviously love their home and you will too.
Michael and I are so pleased that you enjoyed your stay. One of the reasons we chose the apartment and we love to stay there ourselves is the amazing light. Best wishes in your travels, Elaine
Perfect location! Sunny, bright with stunning views over the rooftops and the mountains.
Our second time staying at Ciel Bleu; we thoroughly enjoyed living in this neighbourhood ... from the friendly vegetable/fruit sellers, the local bakeries, shops, cafes and restaurants ... all within walking distance.
Perfect location, close to everything Ceret had to offer.
We hope to return again in the future.
We are so pleased you enjoyed your second stay. We love the neighborhood, too, especially having our local boulangerie right around the corner down a cobble-stoned street. The baguettes are still warm early morning after being made right on the premises -- yum! Please let us know if you have any suggestions for Ciel Bleu.
Besides the bright sunshine and clear blue skies, one of the many charming features of this village is that it has a small modern art museum founded in part by Picasso, who donated some of his work when it was created. Picasso, Matisse, and other well-known painters of the era frequented Ceret for inspiration and captured its charm on canvas.
