Sun-Filled Apt, Centre Old Ceret, Spectacular Balcony View

Property type apartment

About the property

1 bedroom + sofabed steps from where Picasso painted

History buffs, culture vultures, and those just seeking R&R will naturally gravitate toward our sleek, sun-filled apartment in centre of this picturesque village (see photo link) above Devil's Bridge in the foothills of the Pyrenees Mountains in the south of France. In the early 20th century, the village served as an artists' mecca for the likes of Picasso, Matisse, Braque, and others. Beach bums might want to look elsewhere, although the Mediterranean is about 30 minutes away for a day at the beach or even a leisurely seaside dinner. Other swimming options include a lovely lake with beach and snack stand about 10 minutes away or the town's swimming pool (beside the public tennis courts). The village has retained its traditional character, with locals gathering on park benches to chat or watch other townsfolk playing boules. At the same time, village squares are surrounded by restaurants offering fine French cuisine and good local wine. Cafes and gift shops are tucked into the narrow lanes leading off the squares. On Saturdays, there is a colourful weekly farmers' and artisans' market. Cultural festivals celebrating the Catalan heritage of the region take place throughout the year -- the cherry festival being one of the highlights. Still largely undiscovered in comparison with nearby Provence, this region is known for its brilliant sun under bright blue skies and its temperate climate.

Our south-facing apartment is on the third floor of a small building with a convenient elevator/lift. In terms of mod cons, it has TV, WIFI, clothes washer and tumble dryer, ipod speakers, and air conditioning. The apartment overlooks a quiet historic square, quiet except for market day on Saturday when you can look down from our bistro table on our patio and watch shoppers linger at the fresh produce and crafts market stalls below. One of our favourite things is to wake up in the morning and gaze from our pillows at our neighbours' tile rooftops against the surrounding foothills, with a bright blue sky capping the scene. We love our 'Appartement Ciel Bleu' and think you will, too.

About Elaine Koerner

We live in Washington, D.C. This apartment is our little slice of heaven we escape to when our schedules permit.

Elaine Koerner purchased this apartment in 2010

Why Elaine Koerner chose Céret

The village of Ceret is near a major autoroute and has local buses to many destinations and yet it feels far away from the hustle and bustle (see photo link). From a distance, you can see the village set against the foothills of the Pyrenees, with a beloved mountain peak called Canigou presiding over the scene. To enter the village, you cross the River Tech and climb up to the centre ville, where our apartment is located. Even though there is so much to see and do in Ceret itself, vineyards, olive groves, castles, other historic villages further up the valley, and the Mediterranean in the opposite direction are not far away. Frequent buses go to Perpignan and other villages. Ceret's location in the foothills of the Pyrenees, but also close to the Mediterranean and not far from the Spanish border, makes it ideal for either staying put or venturing out. A local 1 euro bus goes to many nearby destinations and connects to train stations.

What makes this apartment unique

We chose this apartment because it is cheerful, sun-filled, and located in a quiet historic square that is just steps from bustling cafes and shops. The apartment itself is in a well-maintained building with an elevator - no schlepping up and down endless flights of stairs with suitcases or groceries - and has a magnificent view of village rooftops and the foothills of the Pyrenees Mountains from its sunny south-facing windows with balconies. All the amenities are modern and yet the facade of the building is in keeping with the historic character of the square. No fuss, no muss, just settle in and relax in the apartment, or step out the door to all that a traditional French village has to offer. The apartment is modern with white walls and ceiling and very light and bright. It's well laid out in that the bedroom looks out onto the balcony which has a view of the rooftops and foothills so your first sight when you open your eyes is this amazing view. The living, dining, and kitchen area are open and create a feeling of flow and spaciousness. Each floor to ceiling window has a small step-out balcony where we have placed some lovely French pottery.

Guestbook comments from the manager

Hi Elaine

When I bought a (disappointing) Galette des rois yesterday, I was reminded of the lovely boulangerie around the corner from your apartment in Céret, where I spent 3 happy months last winter. They were so friendly, suggesting I have a small Galette, rather than the large one. But it still had the charm (a 1€ bus!) and broad bean. The little greengrocer opposite was friendly too, as were the cafés I frequented most, who made me 'chocolat chaud' as soon as I walked in.

Your apartment was SO comfortable, warm enough to rarely use the aircon extra heating, and very well equipped in the kitchen. Above all for me, was its wonderful position, high enough to be light, with plenty of sun, and with the beautiful balcony to sit most days. Being right above the Saturday market was full of atmosphere, and a good source of fresh veg, cheese, and fish.

What a lovely place to stay, well sheltered from the strong winds of the coast. These photos, taken just outside your apartment, show the troubled sky on one of those windy days, from peaceful Céret.

Wonderful place with excellent views in the centre of everything

  • 5 of 5

This was our third time staying here and it is as wonderful as ever. We know the area very well and wanted a central spot to travel around while also relaxing early morning and late evening. This is perfect for that. Hope to visit again

A Beautiful Relaxing Apartment

  • 5 of 5

I couldn't imagine a better place to kick back and relax in Ceret. The apartment is perfect in every way. After a busy week in Berlin, we enjoyed the quiet of Ceret and having a home away from home. Fresh croissants and coffee on the balcony were a great way to start every day. The apartment is well located , tastefully decorated, clean, lacks for nothing, and is extremely comfortable. We enjoyed day trips, the market, and just hanging out. I highly recommend it, and can't way to stay there again.

Owner's Response: Hi, Roberta, We're so pleased you enjoyed your stay, especially because you mentioned in our Guest Book that your friends who stayed in Ciel Bleu previously recommended it. We just arrived yesterday ourselves for a two-month stay and already are enjoying the view from our balcony. Our best wishes for fun future travels. Hope you will have a chance to come back to Ciel Bleu. Elaine and Michael, owners

Ciel bleu -a quiet cosy retreat

  • 4 of 5

We found the flat to be a convenient base for visiting the whole region; from Carcassonne in the west, to Montpellier in the east- as well as south into Spain - Barcellona.

The flat is very well equiped - everything you might need right down to spare light bulbs and umbrella if it rains.

Quiet, a boulangerie just round the corner and a good range of restaurants.

The weather was splendid for the whole time we were there (spring & early summer 2018)

Owner's Response: Hello, Brian - we're so glad you enjoyed your stay and that the apartment met all you needs. We have stayed in our beloved Ciel Bleu ourselves during February and love the frequent bright blue skies and sunshine in contrast to the typically gray skies elsewhere. We hope you'll return.

Superb location.

This wonderful apartment has the most exceptional view to the hills of Ceret and the streets below, particularly on market day. A cosy well equipped home away from home in the centre of beautiful Ceret. Can't recommend it highly enough - it was our second stay there

Besides the bright sunshine and clear blue skies, one of the many charming features of this village is that it has a small modern art museum founded in part by Picasso, who donated some of his work when it was created. Picasso, Matisse, and other well-known painters of the era frequented Ceret for inspiration and captured its charm on canvas.
