We discovered Isla Mujeres when Tom was looking for an escape from Wisconsin winters, wind chills and icy roads. As a professional firefighter and EMT, he had his fill of cold weather of any kind. Our first visit was in 1991, and we immediately fell in love with Isla Mujeres. We began returning every winter and extending our visits. In 1998 we purchased a lot and built our dream home at the quiet south end of Isla. In 2004 Maggie saw that many more visitors were on their way to Isla, and the poorest residents would not share in the tourist dollar. English skills are key to making a good wage on Isla Mujeres. With our private savings we bought a lot and built a building for an English School. Maggie ran La Gloria English School, teaching English to local people for 9 years, opening opportunities and changing the lives of many. The school was closed in 2013 and we are now officially retired. It is great to spend our winters on Isla Mujeres. We offer the Salina Grande upper from April to the end of the year, rented by the week. We think you will enjoy your stay, others have loved it!

Isla Mujeres is easy to get to from the Cancun airport, including and a short ferry ride with breath-taking views. This property is in the community, about 2 miles from downtown, and has a wonderful view of the Salina Grande, the island's inland saltwater lake. It is spacious, with more than a bed and mini-kitchen. It has an open layout and full kitchen for cooking.
There is a small grocery is next door, and a major grocery store 10 minutes away. The relaxed atmosphere and great Mayan community make it a very friendly place to visit. It is a beautiful island with photo-ops in every direction. We love Isla Mujeres. From this mid-island location it is an easy walk to a number of great restaurants, or a 30 minute walk to downtown, with shopping, restaurants and beaches. Taxi service is very handy and inexpensive.
Isle Mujeres, Salina Granda Casa January 29 – April 1, 2013
The Salina Grande Casa is budget accommodation with all the sights, sounds and smells of a busy mid- island residential area. A great experience for those seeking knowledge of a Mayan
community as opposed to resort holidays. We highly recommend this to those who want sun, sand and
swimming in the warm waters of the Caribbean.
The upper floor unit is clean, safe and comfortable. Several windows and ceiling fans keep the unit cool during the day and perfect for sleeping; air conditioner was seldom used. The bathroom is spacious with an enormous shower stall. The living area is open with access to a roof top deck. Sitting on the deck and taking in the street scape on one side and the Salina Grande on the other, where one can get great walks in, was so enjoyable. Some great restaurants located in La Gloria, easy walking
distance from the unit.
The mid-island residential location of the unit is very convenient. Taxi service is always available.
The local bus, costing only 5 pesos, goes by frequently and circles the island with it's final stop on the north end of the island. Chedraui; a large full service supermarket is located 4 blocks away and easy
walking distance. For our extended stay it was convenient. The neighborhood is friendly and busy during the day and quiet during the night.
Only one minor issue with the wifi connectivity; Maggie, the owner, corrected the problem without delay. Maggie and Tom are super owners who provided friendly and helpful information.

We enjoyed living, mostly, as the locals do in the Salina Grande neighborhood. The apartment is nice for two, my husband could watch sports from the hammock in the living room while I read in the bedroom area. The lake offers a steady breeze and pretty view, especially of sunrise, and we enjoyed watching our neighbors walk, jog and rollerskate on the surrounding path. Everyone, taxi drivers, restaurant servers, beach vendors and store clerks, were happy to give us a free Spanish lesson as we struggled to convert our few memorized words into sentences. Isla restaurants are terrific. Elderly ladies on the sidewalk bundled us into a taxi with instructions to take us to Picus, where I had the best shrimp cocktail- Isla style w a side of habanero in lime juice. Three of our faves within walking distance of apartment: Esperanza tacos (most tender pork roast tacos- 2 of those w a bottled water for 30 pesos), Kash Kekan (carefull when ordering, those are KILOs of meat, not pounds), and Veradero (watch yachts glide into the lagoon for the evening while you sip a smooth mojito and listen to Cuban jazz.) In the north end, we revisited some old faves and discovered a new gem: Los Fueguitos Steak House, just next door to Secreto hotel. Terrific food, service and atmosphere for a date nite. Empanadas, bread w small appetizer, a shared, perfectly cooked New York Strip w potatos, 2 glasses of wine and gratuity for 430 pesos. Beach clubs- we found most of the Playa Norte clubs a bit noisy, and found ourselves settling at the Caribbean Queen several times to relax in the hammock. Their Coconut Shrimp was outstanding and big enough to share. Also enjoyed first visit to Playa Lanchero for the famous Tix&Chix- fun people watching as the boats from Cancun drop passengers to the private club next door. Shopping: small tienda next door is handy for water & snacks. A short walk to Chedraui supermarket for yogurt (apple version -very refreshing) fruit and coffee, is on a terrific corner for hailing a taxi. We returned to MN just as temps were dropping below-zero, and within hours felt all the lovely humidity of Isla evaporate. The five pounds I gained eating and napping are still with me. What a lovely vacation!
Tom and Maggie were by far the best people to deal with since I discovered Isla. This unit is small and clean. It offers the experience of the real Isla Mujeres. If you are a hotel resort person this is not for you. But if you want to feel and see Isla Mujeres this is the place for you. They give back to the island by running an English school that I highly recommend everyone should volunteer at. We caught taxis the whole trip for 20 pesos we did not rent a cart this time. New great grocery store in walking distance. Locals come by daily honking their horns on bikes selling hot tortilla. And by noon the tamale man comes by selling fresh tamales. Great little places to eat near by. Not on the ocean but your just a few mintues away from having your toes in the sand.
This apartment was a great size for two people. Nice breezes so no need for a/c. Nice Mexican neighbourhood with lots of working people and kids. Located right in the middle of the island which is 7km long punto a punto. We cooked most of our own meals and found the apartment had the equiptment to enable that. Good markets within one klm. Maggie and Tom had the place very clean and were helpfull with local information . Nice people and very respectful of renters privacy. They have a home elsewhere on the island. Thanks you guys. We will tell our friends .
Perched above the Salina Grande, mid-island--adjacent to a saltwater lake with a community walk-way and lots of migratory birds--is this spacious, efficient vacation studio. In a safe, colorful neighborhood, close to a fresh market, the studio has a Salina view and captures refreshing breezes off the water. We didn't need the A/C although it was available. The owner's were responsive to our inquiries but didn't hover. We were comfortable walking at night along the Salina, with its well-lit pathway. Steps from a small grocery, taxi's and local "combi" buses, we recommend "Play Secreto" at the north end of the island, Garafon de Castillio at the south--and the trip to Isla Contoy with the Fishermen's Cooperative. Arrachera tacos at "Bastos" next to the supermercado at the end of the Salina in Colonia La Gloria and fish ceveche at the first restaurant to the north of the ferry terminal were some of our favorites. The small eateries next to the mercado in town will also satisfy without denting your budget! The studio has flat-screen TV and Wi-Fi. I almost forgot to mention the 'best bathroom in Mexico"! Stay for a week or a month--you won't regret it. Great value--highly recommended.
Isla Mujeres is a convenient shuttle and ferry ride from the Cancun Airport. The Salina Grande house is 2 miles from the center of town and great beaches. It is in the local community, with friendly people and plenty of convenient restaurants and one 'big box' store just 10 minutes walk from the door. Cabs are very easy to catch and most rides are $2 or less. The 2nd story setting provides a great cross breeze in the apartment!
