Guestbook comments from the owner

We had different Brazilian guests staying in March, April and May. All of them praised the beauty of the house and the various views that one can have from it. Some of them claimed that they were in Paradise, others that the scenery and the house service was so good that it felt like being in a soap opera.

In late June we are having our first international guests...from Sweden!!!

Top family time at an island idyll....

  • 5 of 5

Firstly, Maria Helena was so easy to deal with, helpful and pragmatic, and arranged our transfers from GRU. Thank you!

What a sense of adventure leaving the jetty on the mainland for the 10 minute transfer by the house's boat to the island! The house was as described, and did not disappoint. We did not need the teenager room below the main house as the children all used the top dwelling, and it was no bother for the house staff to move a third bed into one of the rooms.

Beautifully appointed, large wine glasses, plenty of ice cube facilities and satellite TV, periodic wifi, a/c in the bedrooms, and few mosquitoes. And the staff (boatman, cook/housekeeper, maid) was not intrusive. The wonderful beach was great at low and high tide, as was the kayaking, even if an 11 year old thought the other island was slightly closer than it was....and we had some communication issues mostly about meal choices which added to the fun, as Rogeria was great! We curtailed our use of the outside shower as the few storms seemed to miss us and so didn't fill up the tanks, but we never once ran out.

So some tips.....

Do go the Carlao supermarket in Pararty. Better choice of food, although the other one did have a fair choice of wine that you will need to take with you. There are plenty of fishmongers from Carlao back to the harbour side in Paraty and are cheaper. You can even get the boat to pick you up from Paraty and not Praia Grande. Only 20 mins, so easy for day tripping. At Praia Grande small shop for snacks and essentials, and a great fishmonger. On the island there is a tiny shop that shuts at 2pm. We went to Mamangua, 40 mins by boat. Yes, interesting, but just good fun to be out in the boat, and take a lunch stop if need be with the views.

We ate at Turbarao on the island a couple of times, and got picked up later by the boat. I suggest you walk there first and not back to the house, as it is easy to take a wrong path! Behind the house (up 142 steps!) and turn right, just 10 minutes to a lovely beach bar with great fried seafood and chips. On way back you can drop down to the tiny beach and swim back around the rocks to the house.

There is a list of key food ingredients in English and Portuguese in the house, but no other English instructions so Google Translate came to the rescue! Indeed, I would suggest using Alfonso for your trips around Paraty and airports as he can speak English, Spanish and Portuguese and is fun.

A special place.

Owner's Response: I am glad that you had a fun time at the island and the house. Thank you for the additional tips. There is a 6-page English and Portuguese brochure in the house that contains tour, bar, restaurant suggestions. I will make sure that this is included in the welcoming package! Come again!

Heaven on Earth, an absolute Paradise

  • 5 of 5

Our expectations were already big but once we arrived we couldn't believe how wonderful the energy and the beauty of that place was! It was the perfect set for a dream family holiday (3 couples). The sea is calm and beautiful not to mention the hot water temperature__ you can just swim all day! There are giant turtles swimming around (they are absolutely harmless) and if you are lucky, you can see dolphins swimming right in front of the house! The sounds of the birds, bugs, sea etc is the best soundtrack you could have.. it only reinforces the feeling of being in a complete paradise.. ! Besides all the surrounding being super relaxing at nigh for some reason we all had super restful sleep! The house is super comfortable, practical and beautifully decorated. In the main house you have a open kitchen, living room and a beautiful dining table outside with breathtaking views. Upstairs is the main bedroom with a great toilet and shower overlooking the sea_ you will feel like being in a boat. In the other building (few steps from the main house) you have 2 suites, both beautiful and comfortable.

Despite the location and house being perfect i believe the special touch comes from the amazing staff! Roberta, Jessica and Mr. Adauto. There made us all feel ultra special, spoiling us with the best food and desserts and making sure we had nothing to worry about! Mr. Adauto also took us fishing and anywhere you need to go, he will happily take you. We already miss them all!

In the end of the day, if you are up for exploring, I would recommend the "jungle paths" right behind the house.. we can either go right and follow the path till a nice beach bar called "Tapera" or go left towards a more populated area with a bakery and a local bar with great "pasteis" and caipirinhas called "Tubarao".

Make sure you visit the craftsman/ artist Amir house (near the church), he sells beautiful hand made wood boats and paintings. He also sells a very interesting book (which himself is the author) about "Ilha do Araujo" with beautiful illustrations.

I would leave the rest for you to find.. i can only add__ WE ARE DEFINITELY ALL COMING BACK!! and hopefully very SOON!

Thank you so much Maria Helena for all your help and for putting your amazing energy in every corner of that house!

Also, SAULO is the best driver/ transfer you can find if you need a taxi, if you are coming from Rio, Sao Paulo etc.. Maria Helena kindly organised it for us.

Pre World Cup 2014 - Perfect Island Retreat Destination

  • 5 of 5

This place was a perfect property to relax and enjoy some time to ourselves before the madness of the World Cup 2014! We had an excellent time. We had some traffic problems getting there and were late upon arrival, but Adauto was still on the mainland waiting for us and Rogeria still had an amazing meal waiting for us when we arrived. Shopping, housekeeping, cooking, and travel to and from the island were all taken care of and we didn't have to worry about much, if anything regarding our stay.

Even though it rained for a whole day while we were there, we had a great time hiking around the island and exploring historical Paraty on one of the sunny days. The rain was actually very relaxing for us to sit out on the porch and read and eat under the awning while the rain came down around us. The house itself is extremely beautiful, and was perfect for us 4 travellers. Honestly, this house could be used on a reality tv show...

I wouldn't recommend taking small children to this house however unless you plan on keeping a constant eye on them at all times because there are a few ledges and dangerous mountainside stairways that would make a parent nervous. We didn't have to worry about that because there were four males adults in our group.

I would highly recommend this property for groups that want to get away for awhile, either on a romantic vacation or just a place for friends to get together and hang out for a few days.

5 out of 5 stars!!!!

Owner's Response: I am happy you enjoyed your stay. The house was not designed for small children even though we have had many guests with children who enjoyed their stay and kept coming back. Hope you will do the same.

Tropical Paradise in Paraty!

  • 5 of 5

Just returned from a week's stay at this gorgeous house in Paraty. Were very fortunate to have been greeted and given tour by the owner, who was lovely and provided great information and assistance getting settled in. Even though it was local winter, weather was fantastic with high's in the low 80's and low's in the mid-60s with no rain!

The house is very nicely furnished with great open-air feel. Plenty of space for our party of 6 and the highlights for us were i) eating Rogeria's wonderful cooking out on the patio for most of our meals, ii) exploring Paraty for shopping and dining, iii) the waterfall that you can slide down (Tobeigera?) with the Tarzan bar (where we watched Brazil defeat Chile - hooray!), iv) cooking class in Paraty - definitely a must! and v) boat trip to private beach (Sobrado) with hiking and beautiful swimming area.

Cooking class was a great time for our family (2 adults, 2 kids ages 14 and 20) and Richard/Yara Roberts were fantastic hosts full of fun and information.

Paraty is a beautiful town with a great historical center with shops/restaurants/galleries/bars and also cool/cheaper main city with 1-2 streets of good shopping and restaurants/bars.

Definitely recommend getting car/van service to/from Rio/Sao Paolo as boat was easy to get us where we needed to go and we only had to use taxi's/buses a couple of times during the week (not worth paying for a rental car).

Rogeria (the cook) was a real treat and we were able to communicate with her using Spanish, some English and sign language - she even helped us by cooking alternative dishes for those with allergies/preferences that didn't fit with the main menu. Having someone cook and clean for us each day was a revelation on vacation - not sure how we'll ever go back to fending for ourselves!

Bring some bug spray as their were mosquitoes, but it wasn't too bad.

Go-go-go to this wonderful getaway location!

Owner's Response: I am glad that you enjoyed the Paraty Winter, sunny, clear and mild as well as the many existing attractions not only in the historical village but the adventurous surroundings. There will be a brochure describing the highlights as sometimes I cannot be the welcoming guide. Thank you for bringing them up and for the lovely comments.

Aussie Winter trip to Brasil (July 2013)

  • 5 of 5

Our first trip to Brasil, I must say I'd visit Brasil again just so that we could stay at the house and Island, and catch up with Rogeria and Vera and enjoy being looked after by them all over again.

House - Beautiful solid architecturally designed home, perched just above a small beach with a long jetty, with professional and accommodating staff and owner and thoroughly relaxing atmosphere. The house is designed to let the outside in and is split across two separate buildings allowing privacy for the entire family. Beautiful gardens and walkways designed with a lovely combination of tropical rainforest and manicured beds.

Wildlife - Turtles, Marmoset, lizards, Garfish, tree dwelling rodents, butterflies, birds of all shapes and sizes and tadpoles!

Eating - breakfast, lunch and dinner all freshly caught or bought and cooked and served by our hosts in the open sided al fresco dining room - bliss.

Travel - our captain dutifully made himself available when ever needed to zip us to the island, into Paratay, or beach restaurant, or beautiful secluded beach. We walked with Rogeria one evening home to see her village on other side of the island and had the pleasure of meeting her beautiful grand daughter. We were left with the impression of a very close knit and caring community.

A great holiday for us all - little to distract other than the sighing of the ocean, plenty of reading, walking swimming and stoking up the fire for the evening. Every aspect of the domestic situation were taken care of by Rogeria, Vera and Adauto, so nothing to do except relax enjoy the house, garden, beach, wildlife, bay and Paraty if feeling really energetic.

Maria Helena excelled as an owner arranging transport to and from Rio for us and rallied the staff to fix a big ooops on my part when I left certain important documents tucked away safe in the house and forgot to take them with me. They were delivered safely in my hands in Rio within 48 hours. A big thank you to you Maria Helena and your wonderful staff and for making your beautiful waterside home available for us to stay in.

Best wishes David

Amazing Family Vacation!

  • 5 of 5

What an excellent choice for our family's summer vacation! My husband and I, with our 3 girls (10, 8 and 5 years old) spent 18 days in this fabulous house. We were pampered by Rogeria's delicious meals and Adauto's patient, reliable boat service. The beds super comfortable, the house impeccably clean and beautifully designed and decorated. We enjoyed ocean views every moment of the day - from the bedrooms, the master bathroom, and at each meal on the lovely veranda. We collected shells on the tiny beach, jumped from the dock, watched the sea turtles and flute fish that visited each day, and even saw a school of dolphins jumping past, just 30 meters from the pier! We explored the local beaches with Adauto as our guide and enjoyed the colonial charm of Paraty.

I cannot say enough about the service! I am so thankful to Maria Helena, the owner, who went out of her way to accommodate us - facilitating payment, shopping, additional guests, dietary restrictions.... Truly exceptional! Rogeria managed the meals flawlessly, quickly learning how to prepare gluten-free alternatives for my daughter and suggesting local fish and traditional dishes that were delicious. Adauto went out for fresh seafood each day and accompanied us to the town for larger grocery purchases.

The layout - master suite upstairs in the main house, plus 2 ample suites in a separate 'guest cottage' just a few meters away - was perfect for us. The 4th bedroom has a new, comfortable twin bed, oceanfront access but no real view from the room and no in-suite bathroom, which was perfect for our needs but certainly different than the other rooms.

A great place to relax, swim, explore by land and sea, appreciate nature! The grounds are filled with tropical plants, orchids, butterflies, lizards, hummingbirds, and the wood and stone of the house blends right into the natural surroundings. I hope you, too, will have the opportunity to visit!
