Having been built in 1910, and nestled a block from Bryant Park bordering the intracoastal waterway, the South Palmway House is one of the oldest remaining cottages in Lake Worth Beach and sits in the middle of the town’s South Palm Park Historic District.

Built in a style sometimes referred to as a “Hemingway House” in reference to those of acclaimed author Ernest Hemingway in Key West and Cuba that had wrap-around porches, exposed beams and more windows than walls, the main homestead has high 10 foot beadboard ceilings with exposed beams ribbing both the living and dining rooms, painted sky blue true to the Southern tradition to ensure good luck to all who dwell within. Original wide plank Dade pine floors dominate the main house, and built-in china cabinetry completes the period look in the dining room. Originally having been built with porches surrounding the entire house, 2 remain as deep enclosed porches with a combination of louvered jalousie and casement windows with original early 1900’s glass panes that prove their antique status with their waves and imperfections.

More recently, the property’s ample size as a double building lot allowed its owners to expand its plantings of century old mango & mulberry trees to include starfruit trees, passion fruit, banana and a host of flowering bushes with scented blossoms. The owners were known to have had a rule that all plantings should bear either “fruit, flower or scent.”

Over the decades, the house has been lovingly restored, and modernization of plumbing, electric, insulation, central air conditioning and other amenities followed. However, a clawfoot tub with surrounding wainscoting in one of the two main house bathrooms remains as additional fitting tribute to its origins more than a century ago.
