Casa Chalet is your perfect choice for a welcome warm tropical vacation

Bedrooms 3
Property type house
Minimum Stay 3 nights

About the property

3 bedrooms, 2 full baths, sleeps 5

Casa Chalet is a real house, not an apartment. We are on a very private large property. Many rentals do not like to show you pictures of their house or true location, there is a reason for that. All of our pictures are from our property with the exception of one from flamenco beach with my kids and the ones from Bravo Beach. Our House has three Bedrooms, two on the second floor and one bedroom on the first. I used to allow 6 guests but after an abuse of this situation in July 2016, I stopped allowing more then 5. The infrastructure of the house is not built for unlimited guests. So to be frank if you are thinking of sneaking in more people please do not rent my house because you will break things. The master Bedroom has its own little balcony. In addition we have a kitchen with all modern appliances, living and dining rooms, two full bathrooms and a laundry room with washer and dryer. There are two queen beds, one full and a roll away cot.

We have Satellite TV (dish network), Full wireless Internet, a game cube system/w games a DVD and air conditioning in the bedrooms. There is a shaded deck with water views in the back that is completely private and a shaded tiled tropical patio in the front. Our property is private yet in walking distance to restaurants and shopping.

About Don Delcollo

I bought this property with the attention of moving here when my kids finished high school. Well ones in college and the other is almost finished H.S.!

Don Delcollo purchased this house in 2007

Why Don Delcollo chose Culebra Pueblo

I treat this property as my second home not a rental property.

What makes this house unique

We have big trees which you will not find with most other places to rent. This keeps the house cool and makes it easy to stay outside without being in the direct sun. If you do get to much sun this means you will not spend your days sitting inside worried about getting more sunburn!

Wonderful experience at Casa Chalet and Culebra!

  • 5 of 5

We (1 couple, 2 singles) had a wonderful experience with Casa Chalet. Don was very helpful before the trip, suggesting not only things to do and see on Culebra, but on the main island as well, and checked-in throughout our stay. We were easily able to coordinate with Carla, the on-island caretaker, who helped us get acquainted with the island and really went above and beyond to help us have a wonderful vacation. The house was perfect for our needs - comfortable, clean, and affordable. The deck was great for reading, relaxing with the birds and iguanas, and watching the sun come up. The kitchen was well-appointed and there were plenty of sheets and towels. We didn't even rent a car for most of our stay, as "town" is only a 15-minute walk away, and we easily caught a shuttle to Flamenco Bay.

Casa Chalet perfect location

  • 4 of 5

My family and I had a wonderful first time visit to the island of Culebra. Culebra is a truly amazing place and Casa Chalet is very well situated for everything on the island. We walked to and from town every evening, hung out on all the amazing beaches and went to Culebrita Island twice (by water taxi), snorkeled, etc…. And the view from the Krusty Crab (same neighborhood) was breath taking.

Jeep parking was tough in town, but we also rented a golf cart which was great for short visits to town and for grocery runs. Jeep is best for driving to all the beaches.

The house is in the Clark Barriada, with people who actually live on the island. Everyone was super friendly. The house itself has 2 bedrooms upstairs (with air conditioning) and a bathroom and shower; downstairs has a kitchen, eating area, living room area, bathroom with shower and sleeping room/office (NO air conditioning). Large back porch with a table and chairs. Plenty of room for my family of 5.

DO not expect 5 star hotel, the house definitely needs some work, but enjoy an authentic local and comfortable enough experience. Can not beat price and location. The property is relatively private and off a long driveway from the street. Also, and most importantly, the owner was extremely helpful in helping me prepare for everything I needed for our first trip to Culebra. (BRING bug spray and sun screen---duh).

After my wife and oldest kid got over the shock of staying locally in the Barriada the first day and not at some fancy resort, all went very well. At the end of the week all my kids told me it was the best vacation ever!!

Not as advertised (We have recent pictures)

  • 1 of 5

1) DIRTY HOUSE: The house was absolutely filthy when we arrived. Part of our party arrived early, only because Don said it was ok for them to drop off luggage and come back once the place had been cleaned by a cleaning service. Our check in date and time was July 1st at 3pm and they arrived on that day at 11 am. Don called our party an hour and a half later to tell them it was ok for them to come back and check in. At that time my party came back to the house and found the house disgustingly dirty. They contacted us and sent us pictures of the filth and we asked Don to have the house cleaned again. He told us he would have a cleaning crew go back and clean again. When I arrived at 5pm I found that this house still had filthy bathrooms, dirty stove, dirty floors and the list goes on. It's like the house had not been cleaned in months. I told Don to have the house cleaned again. I have photos of the dirtiness. It turned out that Don never hired a cleaning crew. The "cleaning crew" was Don's son, the son's girlfriend, and two of his son's friends that were all staying at the house before we arrived. They were actually on their own vacation at the house. They are in their early twenties and don't know how to clean a house properly.

2) WATER LEAKING FROM REFRIGERATOR: From day one the refrigerator was leaking inside the refrigerator and on the floor outside of the refrigerator. A previous review submitted on January 17, 2016 complained about this leaking but we thought Don would have fixed this before renting the house again. Obviously he did not. Our entire stay at the house we needed to empty a bowl of water from the leaking inside the fridge and put towels around the refrigerator for the leaking outside. This was a huge inconvenience during our stay.

3) LEAKING SINK: Day 2- we came home in the evening to water flooding the kitchen. One member of our party slipped an=nd fell on the water in the kitchen. Don said that we were overworking the water heater. He accused us of having more people in the house than what was agreed to when we finalized our rental agreement. We did not have more people at the house. BUT Don did allow his son and three other people to stay in the adjoining room attached to the house. So if the water heater was overworked, it was due to those extra people in the house. Don agreed to rent the house to me, my wife, three other adults and two children. Continue on next review...

Owner's Response: I had to evict these people, it makes me sick to read their review. Home away should be ashamed of themselves for letting someone who was evicted for gross violations of their agreement from posting a review. These people actually did the same to someone else afterwards. There were supposed to be 5 adults and 2 small kids instead they brought in 14 people broke my water heater, tried to get a refund from paypal while they were at the house pretending they did not go. We had to call the police and shut off the utilities to get them out of the house. Because of these people I changed my policy to a maximum of 5 people and took my property off line for a month deciding if I was going to rent my house out anymore. The house looks exactly like the pictures and everything works, I am not going to waste my time answering anything. I was lucky my 6"8" college basketball playing son and his girlfriend were staying in my efficiency who kept count of the people and was there to remove them.

Island adventure

  • 5 of 5

We were looking to get away and when we saw Casa Chalet online we thought OK this is different! We were not let down. Tucked into a private corner of an island neighborhood we got to experience a totally different life then we were used to. The views and sounds of the surroundings, the chickens running around the iguanas in the trees (if you look) was just what we needed.

The house had more then you would expect from a moderately priced rental property. It was perfect for us. The internet, TV and washer and dryer all worked. The kitchen has everything needed. We suggest renting a jeep because there are many places on the island that you don’t want to miss. We are planning on making this a yearly trip, we miss it already.

A Great place to relax!!!!

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time at Casa Chalet! The house was perfect for us; Natural, comfortable and private. The owner went out of his way to help us with some travel issues. The deck is completely private and the views are great both water views in the day and stars at night. I have not slept that good in months! The internet and Wifi works great (sometimes we wished it would not). We are definitely coming back :-)

Don't rent this property

  • 1 of 5

Please, please, don’t stay here under any circumstances. We have rented all over the world and this is the worst dump anywhere. We just got back from 2 weeks of hell in Casa Chalet on Culebra.

We had been promised that we could drop our bags at the house on arrival and go to the beach while it was being cleaned. But the owner had accepted a last minute rental so the house wasn’t ready and there was no key to lock the door. The care taker’s husband promised to be right back with a key. By 5 PM, the care taker finally showed up with the key. A vacation day lost with no beach. We hung out on the deck and noticed the deck boards were rotten, splintered and had nails sticking up 3/8 on an inch all over. You could not walk on the deck without tripping. Don’t even try to walk on this deck in your bare feet; you’ll rip your feet apart.

Everything about this house is wrong. The refrigerator runs constantly because the door is sprung and water drips down all over your food. The stove malfunctioned on the day after Christmas and we had to throw out the food we had planned to cook. The window and door screens don’t fit properly allowing mosquitoes and other biting insects to invade the house. We were bitten to death every evening. Finally we resorted to buying a whole house spray to protect ourselves.

The bed sheets and towels are worn so much they are thread bare and full of holes. There are no beach sized towels; you need two towels just to lie on the beach. The dryer is not vented properly; just propped up against the screen window. The laundry room is full of lint that covers even the “clean” towels and sheets that are stored there.

The kicker had to be the 1 “sharp” knife in the house, with a broken handle tapped together with duct tape. There are no glasses; we had to buy plastic glasses for juice and wine. There were no basic supplies that come with every rental: flour, salt and pepper, cooking oil, and a few spices. There are no beach chairs; we had to rent them at Flamingo Beach each day.

Stay away from this place. When we brought these issues to the owner’s attention, he said “You’ll get used to the place after a few days”. When the stove stopped working, he said “Everything will be fine; you still have the microwave and the coffee maker”. Do not rent this house.

Owner's Response: Well when someone calls your second home” the worst dump anywhere” in the world, what can you say. I am sorry that they feel that way, I certainly tried to please them but there was nothing I could do. The house looks exactly like it does in the pictures (nothing photo shopped); I offer a nice moderately priced house. They were two older couples who bickered a lot. They did have unusual complaints, they were upset that each person did not have their own reading lights, insisted my router was too old and you could not plug into it etc. There are maybe 15 towels, I keep a few older ones that are a little ragged(not rags) so you have something to clean spills etc. all of my towels are regular sizes and I also keep a few older sheets to use as beach blankets. Maybe they were confused and thought they were for other uses. I have several nice sets of sheets, I received a call Dec 26th at 7:15pm that the stove had electricity but was not heating fully. I had someone there and had it fixed by 9am the following morning (that is the day after Christmas on a small island). I would have thought that would make them happy but apparently they only remember I asked if the other kitchen appliances were working not that the oven was fixed promptly. I just had the house re-screened in October, but if you leave the screen doors open bugs will come in. I’m not sure about kitchen supplies, flour is an unusual request but there is usually spices etc in the cabinets. We also have filtered water pitchers so you do not need to buy bottled water. They did complain about the flight to the island, the car rental people the restaurants etc. it was obvious they had different expectations then Culebra offered.
