Marmalade House is not worth the money.

  • 1 of 5

Let me start with the positive comment about Marmalade House. The location was great. Right on the lake, we rented kayaks went crabbing and fishing. It was a short walk to the beach. That is where the good news ends. There were multiple things wrong with this house. Oven didn’t work, had to wait 3 hours for our French fries to cook. Ice maker didn’t work. Washing machine had to go through spin cycle twice to get water out. We did call the Garrett maintenance line and someone came out promptly. However, we did not expect to deal with several appliance issues on our vacation. The furniture needed to be replaced years ago. Dead flowers in pots outside, looks like they were from last year. Outside deck chairs need to be thrown away as does the pool furniture. It just seems like the owner does not care. Old broken stuff laying around outside. Hot tub would not heat. Poorly equipped kitchen (no measuring cups, cookie sheets, bowls, colander) few drinking cups. Cooking dinner was a real challenge. Kitchen cabinets showed a lot of wear on them. No set up instructions for internet and channels, no welcome kit. Door handles were broken off doors to go out onto balcony. Maintenance person said they were ordered. For the amount of money we paid, we expected more. We have stayed in Seagrove at other retnals this by far has been the worst. The owner should take some of the rental income and spend it on this house. It could be a really beautiful place if the money was spend on maintaining and updating it. Maybe the owner should spend a few nights in the house to see how it feels for his renters. We have a rental house down the jersey shore and as landlords I would never have our rental look like this. I just wanted to write a review about this house, so people know what to expect. The pictures make this house look nice when it is not. Realtors should take this house off their website until the owner addresses these concerns.

Not worth the money

  • 2 of 5

We go on a family vacation yearly that everyone pitches in for, and decided to go big this time since our youngest is going to college in the fall. It was a great location where you could walk to the beach for the day, then come back and swim, fish and kayak in the evening. Basically lots of space and good layout for everyone to spread out. Can't beat the view.

Negatives outweighed the positives for our family. The home was dirty and sticky when we moved in - we never used the railings in the house because your hands would stick to them. The cookware was so sparse we finally gave up trying to cook at the house. We had to cook bacon on a cookie sheet because of no frying pan that could hold more than 2 slices at a time, mix our salad in a spaghetti pot because of no big bowl, and guess at measurements because there were only two measuring cups and they weren't marked so you had to guess what they were. We rented kayaks for the week and had to put them in the car and drive up the road to use them because the dock access at the house was not usable. The patio furniture was brittle and cracked (one of us got pinched to blood), rusted tables that were wobbly, dead plants and bugs (including huge cockroaches in the house), etc. etc.

There was nothing in the house that made you feel like a welcome guest. It's up for sale and it felt like everything is minimally kept, in every way. They just are passing people through to collect money. I sent the management a note when we returned about our disappointment, and their response was we should have called and they would have fixed everything. If this is true, we would have had exterminators, repairmen, maids, and so many people in and out that it would have been even worse. No thanks.

We aren't a snobby family and usually just make due with what we have. After a stressful year saving and taking the time off, we didn't feel like we got what we paid for. Perhaps we all had high expectations for the price of this home and that's why we were all disappointed. I wanted to post a review so if you rent this house, you are aware that you might be disappointed.
