This was our 2nd trip to Wickyup. We absolutely loved the peaceful lake, loons calling and day trips. We booked our next trip back before leaving Maine 😊
Wonderful cabin, had something for everyone. It was nice getting away from social media and wifi was good for a week!
Totally appreciated the privacy and quiet lake.
We loved the isolation of the property, practically had the lake to ourselves.
Enjoyed reading about the history of the area & Admiral Byrd.
Something available to entertain any age.
What a great place! Clean, well stocked and everything we expected. Had a great time boating on the lake, and even weathered Hurricane Lee. Loved all the history that was shared, and all the amazing quotes throughout the camp.
Tunk Lake is an amazing place. My wife spent summers on the lake as a kid but we haven’t been back in 15 years. Wickyup II was a great location for our large family group to stay and reconnect with the lake and surrounding area. If we ever make it back out to Tunk we will certainly seek out Eleanor’s place to set up camp.
This is one of the best properties we have rented in Maine. Quiet, secluded, yet close enough to everything you need.
There may be a 3 rd trip for us. We enjoy it that much.
Well appointed Lake front cabin in the woods. Our family had a very nice stay and accommodations were very comfortable. Location is a bit far from restaurants and grocery stores are limited. The bugs/flies/mosquitoes are fierce, but the hosts had plenty of bug spray and netting available to use. Overall, a lovely place to reconnect with family.
From the moment we arrived stress melted away. Fishing from the canoe, swimming in the crystal clear lake, or napping in the porch swings this vacation had us unplugged in more than one way.

So glad you had a wonderful time! Isn't it special? Stress really does melt away! Thank you.
We began by coming to this oasis every other year, but it has now become the one vacation my family counts on every summer. It has it all- peace and quiet (no internet, phone service), beautiful lake living, coastal views and hikes nearby, Bar Harbor 1 hour away, and memories to last a lifetime.
We LOVED the house and property. Close to Acadia NP and so many sights to see! When the weather didn’t cooperate for sight seeing we were more than content to just be at the lake house and enjoy the so many amenities it offered! Kids had an amazing time, swimming, fishing, canoeing, game room a huge plus! Parents relaxed and enjoyed the lake views! We didn’t want to leave!!!! A vacation full of beautiful sights, laughter, and memories we will all cherish.

Too buggy to have any fun :(
The house was beautiful, spacious and provided lots of indoor entertainment. But, my main reason for picking this home that was not too far from Acadia and was located on a beautiful lake. The pictures depict so much fun at the lake. We were not able to go outdoors let alone down to the lake because we were immediately SWARMED by deer flies once we set foot outside! It was like something out of a bad movie. I realize this is nature and the owner cannot control the bugs, however they should really say "traveller beware, deer fly INFESTATION!" I have never left a vacation spot early. We left early becasue we could not enjoy the outdoors and that goes double for our dogs (thank you for welcoming them but they couldn't swim either!). It was such a disappointment, an expensive disappointment. Again, the home is beautiful. I hope the bugs all die before anyone else vacations there!!

Unclean cabin, vicious mosquitos and an aggressive owner.
The lake is serene and cabin is beautiful with great potential... Our experience was marred by owner's extremely offensive behavior.
Cleanliness: On arrival, upstairs toilet was gross and clogged! Start your vacation by plunging and cleaning a dirty toilet! The couches in the LR need deep cleaning if not outright replacement. They stink. So does the rug. Some of the larger pots and pans in the cabinets had food remains in them. Can you trust anything else is clean? The house water had a musty odor. You could feel it when showering or brushing. The main filter was old and needed replacement. The list of dos and don'ts in this camp are long. They’re especially concerned about protecting the flat surfaces (but not about cleaning them). So we bought plastic wraps from Ellsworth and protected most of them. For this they called us weird germaphobes!! There were no bins for recycling, so we separated out all recyclables and kept them in paper bags. For this they called us “extremely dirty,” (pay attention to wording!) “Left all their garbage piled up inside under the coffee bar”. Don't stay here if you are 'different'!
Comfort: Mosquitos were vicious and too many. Worst in 15 yrs of visits to Maine. Maybe due to the tiny Barbless Pond behind the cabin, not sure...Water pressure dwindled during our stay and was very low in the final days. There was barely any flow on the morning of our departure. Turns out it was the filter issue again. No apologies offered but complained we asked!
Peaceful relaxing week. The plus, believe it or not was no internet. It was the most liberating vacation in a while. Highly recommend it! We cannot wait until our week next week.
This was our 3rd visit. This cabin has it all- kayak’s, canoe, beach, dock, proximity to Acadia Natl park and more. We absolutely love it, and will be back again!
Our family had such a great time at Wickyup! The home and property were just beautiful. The kitchen was well stocked and we loved using the kayaks and canoe to explore the lake. We also enjoyed playing the board games supplied and watching some movies from the huge collection. We would definitely stay here again!
If you are looking to go somewhere quite and peaceful this is where you should go.. The house is beautiful but not as beautiful as the lake. It was difficult not having cell service but there is a phone in the house that you can use. My grandchildren loved playing ping pong and it was probably the first time in years that they went without playing video games and they didn't seem to miss them at all and it forced them outside and play. My 8 year old grandson made a swing out of a piece of wood and rope he found-it was great. This property gave us the opportunity to have some really family time together.
Three families came together for a week together calling Wickyup home. Beautiful home with lots of history on a stunning lake provided everything we needed. We would all love to return to this gem someday!

Communication problem and Mosquitoes
The property is great and in a perfect location. Having said that we didn’t have any kind of communication- no WiFi, no cell and even the fix line didn’t work for us. The only way to communicate with the world was 10 minutes drive to the gate. Although it’s cool to disconnect from the world, you have to be prepared for that.
Another problem was the mosquitoes. We spent our vacation during the end of June. We understand that this year was very rainy and as a result there were tons of mosquitoes all day long. It was really disturbing and it limited our ability to enjoy the beautiful outside and the lake.

best Maine vacation ever
We have been coming to this area in Main for many many years. Yet this year's stay at Wickyup was exceptional. The house was ultra clean, comfortable, well equipped, and very private. The host, Eleanor, as well as Rob, the caretaker, were always helpful and accommodating. The access to the lake was easy, no typical Tunk Lake large boulders, which my two dogs really appreciated. Moose sounds at night, loons during the day... And bald eagles flying above the beach a few times. So close to many hiking trails and fried haddock :-).
thank you Eleanor for sharing your home with us....

Best Relaxing Stay Possible
I have been renting cabins for many years with my family. All the cabins/homes have been on the water edge of lakes. The Wickyup Cabin is by far the best home we have stayed in. The area is very remote and peaceful. Originally the dock and float would be where i thought i would spend most of my time by the water but the beach was amazing. This cabin has it all and you will not be disappointed with your decision to stay here.

About the host
Hosted by Eleanor Byrd
Why they chose this property
Wickyup II is named after our grandparent's original lodge (built-in 1927-28) which burned to the ground in 1984. Waiting 23 years to be able to rebuild, Wickyup II was built in 2007on property, which has been in the family since 1936. It has special meaning to us as we remember all the wonderful times we had as children and can now pass those experiences on to our children and grandchildren.
What makes this property unique
The charm of this beautiful log cabin coupled with forest wilderness makes this location exceptionally heartwarming. The peace and quiet is amazing; unless of course there are parties and children laughing and playing! Listening to the 'quiet' is an experience few of us are familiar with. The crisp clear sounds of wildlife free of any human racket is priceless. The cry of the loon is heard often adding to the feeling of tranquility. The night sky, free of incident lighting is a blanket of stars. Hours spent on the dock at night identifying constellations can not only be a learning experience but also quite romantic! The covered porch has two adjustable hammock chairs with foot slings perfect for reading, napping and just plain swinging. The VERY large open deck looks out on the lake and over the lawn area complete with hammock. For more, see amenities.
