More history and information on the cottage on our ferryendcottages venue and other popular rental venues. Please contact owner to check availability regardless of what the calendar shows.
Our cottage is located on land once owed by John Rolfe, husband of Pocohantas, who established the tobacco cash crop in Virginia in the 1600s - saving the first permanent colony in North America from extinction. The actual site of the 1607 Jamestown fort is directly across the river from the cottage - in view with the naked eye and clearly with binoculars which we provide.
SEE OUR NEW TERRIFIC BEACHFRONT LISTING RIGHT NEXT DOOR TO THIS COTTAGE at www.vrbo.com/777232 "Fabulous and Funky Mid Century Modern Cottage on the James River." Listing 777232 is a wonderful newly renovated cottage literally 10 steps to the beach with sunporch, views, private wide sand beach and pier and central heat and air. Please review the history of our three cottages at ferryendcottages.
Our two James River cottages walk right out to the beach with no steps to climb and are 15-20 minutes from Historic Jamestown and Colonial Williamsburg via the free Jamestown-Scotland Car Ferry at your doorstep. The location is fabulous. It is the closest location to historic Jamestown and Williamsburg of any of the other river locations. Combine the best of historic sight seeing with a wonderful beachfront setting.
Our cottage (listing 352993) is a private, romantic, luxury beach cottage on the James River with direct water access, wide river views, private 180 foot pier, kayaks, fishing poles, and private white sand beach. The cottage is level with the beach so there are no steps to climb. Just walk out the French Doors to your water-side deck, and the beach is about 20 feet away.
Our cottage is a perfect size for a couple but works equally well for a small family of four. It can accommodate up to five people with three cozy bedrooms - one with a queen bed, one with a double bed, and the third with a twin day bed.
The living room, dining room and kitchen are an open L-shaped floor plan to maximize space. The cottage is delightful and the location is wonderful - close to all the historic and entertainment sites in the area. Central heat and air make the cottage a year round destination.
We provide luxury bed and bath linens, terry cloth robes, beach towels, and bath toiletries and paper products for the bath and kitchen. Basic cooking spices are also provided. Each bedroom has a ceiling fan, fluffy pillows, reading light, flash light, alarm clock, and wide wooden window blinds. There are hardwood floors throughout the cottage. The cottage has an HVAC system to provide air conditioning and heat.
The bathroom has the original 1948 vintage claw foot bath tub with new in-tub stationary shower and hand shower, heated towel rack, soft close Toto toilet seat, ceiling heater, exhaust fan, ceiling night light, beautiful stained glass mirror, and a wall of glass turquoise tile.
The full kitchen has custom made cabinets, a ceramic stovetop range, dishwasher, trash compactor, refrigerator with ice maker, vintage farmhouse sink original to the 1948 cottage, and microwave and is stocked with basic cooking spices for your convenience. The kitchen is fully equipped with high quality items and cooking essentials including many small appliances including coffee maker, toaster, electric hand mixer, crockpot, dinnerware and glassware including wine glasses, flatware and cookware.
Our private white sand beach, private pier, kayaks and fishing poles are available for your use as part of the rental rate. We own three cottages, side-by-side on the James River and the beach in front of our three cottages is private for our use and the use of our guests.
Our waterfront cottage is a luxury beach cottage recently renovated to provide a wonderful, relaxing retreat. Shimmering sea glass colors of teal, turquoise, and lavender complement the original vintage tongue and groove knotty pine paneling walls, incredible water views, sand beach and luxury amenities to provide a wonderful alternative to hotel living. The cottage is furnished with lovely antique beds, mirrors, and a dressing table made by the owners grandfather who was a cabinetmaker and antique dealer in Petersburg, VA during the early 1900s. Original vintage brass wall lights and mirrors are in each bedroom. Vases of fresh flowers from the garden are available almost year round.
Water views can be seen out of three sides of the cottage. Enjoy our waterside deck that runs the full width of the cottage and has a gas grill, dining table and chairs, and chairs for relaxing and watching the river sights.
You can enjoy our 180 foot pier for sitting or fishing or crabbing. Many guests enjoy their morning coffee sitting on the pier or walking the beach looking for sharks' teeth and unique shells --- or both. Guests sometimes find it hard to leave the cottage to explore the area. When you do decide to leave, you can spend your time visiting the many historic and entertainment sites close by. You have so many options and never enough time!
The ferry dock is literally right by the cottage. The free car ferry is operated by the VA Dept of Transportation and runs 24 hours a day. The ferry is not noisy and provides lots of entertainment for children (or adults) who like to sit on the beach or deck and count the cars going on and off. You just drive your car on and are directed where to park. The ferry provides an easy, quick and fun 15 minute ride across the river. When the ferry docks at the opposite side of the river (at Jamestown), Williamsburg is 4 miles straight down the road (about 5 min.), and it takes fewer than 15 minutes to get to Busch Gardens. Yorktown, the site of the end of the Revolutionary War, is a about a 20 minute drive from Jamestown down the lovely Colonial Parkway.
The entrance to Jamestown Settlement is at the end of the Jamestown Ferry Pier. Watch for the replicas of the three ships that sailed to Virginia in 1607 (the Susan Constant, Godspeed, and the Discovery) that are docked in the river to your right as you exit the ferry pier.
The James River is a tidal river and is clean and shallow near the beach. The tide comes in and goes out very slowly every 12 hours, so it is great for children to play in. We are close to the salt water of the Chesapeake Bay so the water in the James River is "brackish" water - partly salty and partly freshwater. There are no jellyfish in the James River.
Our two James River cottages provide a rare setting for vacation rental cottages in the Colonial Williamsburg area. There are only five beachfront cottages available on the James River really close to Colonial Williamsburg for short term rental. Pay careful attention to the location of any riverfront cottage not on the James River as they are much farther away from the major historic sites.
Our cottage is located by the Historic Jamestown-Scotland Ferry which is a free car ferry that provides a delightful 15 minute ride across the river where it docks at Jamestown Settlement. With observation decks and lovely views, everyone loves the ferries -- especially children who can feed the seagulls bread off of the back of the boat. The ferry (there are several boats) runs 24/7 on a half hour schedule during the day and an hour schedule at night providing easy and fun access to historic and entertainment sites of Colonial Williamsburg, Jamestown, Yorktown, Busch Gardens, Water Country USA, James River Plantations, The Williamsburg Winery and many other sites. Major Civil War attractions are also close by in Petersburg (an hour away) and Richmond (about an hour and 15 minutes away) and can be reached via Route 10 not using the ferry.
Detailed information on the cottage and the area is provided to guests prior to their arrival, and there is a selection of brochures in the cottage. And......there is a nine foot wide and tall bookcase wall full of books of every description (including those on the local historic areas and many for children), board games, and movies. There is something for everyone! Come, relax, and enjoy! You will be delighted.

Why Deena Allen chose Surry
My aunt and uncle purchased this lot in 1948 and built the cottage themselves over the next three years. My mother and father purchased the cottage next door in 1947. Another aunt and uncle purchased the lots on the other side of my parents cottage and built a cottage there (now referred to as the Pink House). We spent most of our summers at the river while growing up. Although we have experienced many hurricanes over the past 67 years, Hurricane Isabel took her toll on Aunt Annie's cottage and the entire tidewater Virginia area in 2003 when several other waterside cottages and most piers were washed away along with part of the Scotland Wharf ferry structure. Virginia sustained significant damage during Hurricane Isabel with blocked roads, severe coastal and inland flooding, wave surge, and damage, weeks without power and devastated beach communities. Aunt Annie's cottage has been restored since Isabel and decorated with a combination of mostly antique and vintage furnishings. The 1949 items that remain include the original white porcelain farmhouse kitchen sink, the claw foot tub, brass wall sconces in each of the bedrooms, the interior knotty pine paneling walls, the original hardwood floors, and the wooden wall shelves and mirrors in each of the bedrooms handmade by the owner's grandfather. The only furniture in the cottage salvaged from the hurricane are the beautiful cedar four poster bed and dressing table made by Aunt Annie's father in 1950 for her new summer "river cottage." The bed, dressing table and bench continue to reside in the "back'" bedroom now named the "Williamsburg Bedroom." We call the waterside the front of the house should you get confused by my references.
What makes this Cottage unique
There are only a handful of riverfront cottages for short-term rent on the James River and even fewer with level, direct water and beach access. Our two cottages are the only cottages level with the beach providing "walk out the door" access to the river and beach. Most of the other four cottages are set high on a bluff or cliff with steps to climb. Our cottage is located on land level with the beach and close to Williamsburg, Jamestown, Yorktown, Smithfield and other historic sites including Petersburg and Richmond. Not to be missed is the Phamplin Civil War Park and Museum in Petersburg, VA just an hour from the cottage. Smithfield (about a 30 minute drive) is a great spot for antiquing, shopping. and great food. Our favorite shops are Laura and Lucy's and Wharf Hill Antiques. Smithfield also has several excellent restaurants for lunch or dinner. If cooking is not on your vacation menu, take the 15 minute ferry ride to The Chickahominy House Restaurant on Jamestown Road about four miles from the ferry pier (on the Jamestown side) for wonderful breakfasts and lunches. Five Forks Cafe, also about five minute drive from the Jamestown Ferry dock, is a great breakfast spot. Google both for their menus. I recommend lunch at The Old Chickahominy House Restaurant special (Miss Melinda's Special) of brunswick stew, Edward's ham biscuits, fruit salad, iced tea, and a slice of homemade pie all for a very special price. The coconut custard pie is out of this world. Call ahead from the ferry and talk to Dan or Maxine (tell them you are on the ferry) and ask to be put on their seating list.

It would be difficult to find a more delightful place to stay!
Family of five visiting 4 nights over Thanksgiving - age range 3 to 75 ...PERFECT!!! Just how we like it. Deena is quite a good property manager of her family cabin and we tried to respect the property which has been in her family since 1938. You will lack for nothing - she has thought of your every need. It is cozy, and it is charming. Deena had many suggest on where to eat and what to see and how to accomplish all with ease. Cash's final comment (that is the three year old) was "Tell Deena I loved the beach and she has good sand."
Final note to Deena - it was NOT my fault that we crossed over on the ferry upon arrival. Ended up on wrong side of James River and had to cross back over which was still a fun little journey. Front seat people refused to listen to the directions you had carefully given me.

Adorable Cottage on the Water
My sisters, our Dad, and I, enjoyed a very special long weekend in this adorable cottage on the water. The ferry made it all the more special, going back and forth to Williamsburg and Jamestown. We sat on the deck and the pier, dipped our toes in the water, watched the ferry come and go, and explored this historic area. Jamestown was visible directly across the river from us! Historic Jamestown and Jamestown Settlement sites brought out the latent archaeologist in all of us. It is amazing that the exact physical location of the first landing and fort site has been conclusively identified, and that so much is now known. Looking forward to bringing friends and family for another stay! This place is a treasure. Thank you, Deena!
Unbelievable stay in an enchanted cottage!
What a wonderful experience getting to stay in Aunt Annie's cottage for almost a week. We have been to several VRBO properties but never have we come across any one this well cared for, stocked with everything you could possible need, nor anyone that was as "homey" as this one. Kayaks, fire pit, arondak chairs for sitting an listening to the waves, what more can you hope for. We will definitely be back!
Dear Liv, we are delighted that your family enjoyed your stay in our cottage. Please do keep us in mind for another trip to the area. Deena
My husband, myself, and our three-year old daughter so enjoyed our stay at this charming cottage. It provided perfect access to the historical sites of Williamsburg, Jamestown, and Yorktown. My daughter loved the ferry ride and feeding seagulls. She also picked many shells on the beach at the cottage, swam in the James River, loved the adorable swing, and had such a good time there were tears at the end. The cottage was beautifully decorated and had all of the necessities one could think of. Deena put in the extra effort to let us know of places in the area to visit, and we appreciated her recommendations of good places to eat.
So glad to hear that the trip was a success despite the threat of Hurricane Hermine which had all of us on edge. The pictures you sent were delightful. Our cottages and and our location are a wonderful spot for children to play on the beach, and parents do not have to worry about "big" waves like the ocean.Everyone seems to love the tree swing - including adults! It sounds like you covered many of the major historic sites and enjoyed the restaurant suggestions. We will look forward to more visits as your daughter grows up. Warm regards, Deena
Fabulous little cottage, well supplied
(I don't recall the exact date in August)
The cabin had everything you could think of available. The grounds were well maintained. We had fun fishing of the pier. The caretaker was great and easy to get in touch with.
We had two small issues. We had wanted to watch the Olympics but he TV was not working and the caretaker was unable to get it to work. She did try but it was still disappointing.
The ferry is very close, you can't help but watch and listen to it as it goes 24hrs.
Perfect place to get away!
We had a wonderful stay at this cottage! The cottage is quaint and beautifully decorated. Sitting on the beach was relaxing and we also spend a great deal of time fishing from the dock. The location to the ferry couldn't have been any more convenient. We enjoyed the historical sites and were able to visit Jamestown, Williamsburg, and Yorktown. Deena was great to work with and we would definitely stay here again.
Owner's pier at property right next door is available to rental guests for fishing, sunbathing, or just sitting. Enjoy swimming in the river. Bring your boat and dock it at owners pier. Fishing rods and reels and fishing tackle box provided. Two kayaks available for use of rental guests.
