About Robin Brown
After living and teaching around the world for a couple of decades in New York, Kyoto, and Paris, we decided to integrate all our travel experience in Europe, Asia, and Africa into one comfortable, fully-functioning guesthouse. We built it from the ground up using both local Mayan techniques and design help from a Mexico City trained local designer.
Robin Brown purchased this Apartment in 2013
Why Robin Brown chose Puerto Morelos
The guesthouse overlooks a beautiful beach and local schoolyard, so we built the studios each with their own gardens, and left space for the beach breezes to caress the patios. We offer a delightful look at the Mexican beach life.
What makes this Apartment unique
Layla is just steps from the beach, and 2 mins walk to the central square, the heart of the village. This charming fishing village offers a true Mexican experience, beyond the All-Inclusives, and affords optimal relaxation. We offer a RE-creation vacation where you can unwind and enjoy the hair salon services of New York/Paris stylist Steve, delve into the delicious cuisine at our cafe, and explore short vacation classes in languages ( including Mayan) , culture and local ecology. We like to say our guests return home more 'zen', more knowledgable, and more beautiful.....

We have been visiting Puerto Morelos for years, but never spent more than a few hours, this was our first overnight stay, Robin and Steve are great hosts, ready with answers to any and all questions. The location is walking distance and close to everything you need. Only negative is that the beach access has been limited by the town due to the location of the school located across the street. But walking is part of the fun of Puerto Morelos. They have activities almost everyday or night, like open mike night, karaoke, yoga, etc. We were not there the day the offer their Cenote tour, but heard it is great. Puerto Morelos was s sleepy little fishing village, but has been discovered by more and more people, so it was bit more crowded than on our previous visits.
Thanks so much for your thoughts on Layla Guesthouse... I hope your future travels bring you back to Puerto and chance at that tour...a day in the modern mMaya world ! We are working to keep Puerto its own village , with happy visitors like you !
Nice place to stay and has entertainment in the evening in the courtyard.
This is my first time staying at Layla's, but I felt very comfortable staying here. It has very nice garden with white pebbles in front of the room and cool breeze throughout the day. I didn't have to use air conditioner the whole time my stay. I also got a fantastic hair cut from Steve at Layla! I most love was the sound of ocean from the open windows at night. Thank you Robin and Steve!
Robin and Steve have done a wonderful job creating an oasis to relax and also have fun while in PM.
Great location, cute place
Overall, we were pleased with our stay at Layla Guesthouse. The room was clean and tucked back behind Layla's cafe and on a quiet street. We did not have the opportunity to try out the cafe, dipping pool, yoga, or the upstairs bar - we were too busy exploring Puerto Morelos! The location is ideal for walking to any restaurant and the main square. There is a nice supermarket just a couple of blocks down the street to load up on beverages, pan dulce, and pretty much anything else you might need. Layla's has previously been described as having beach access, though that access has since been gated off and you have to walk in to town anyway to access the beach. There is a school directly across from the guesthouse, which blocks direct access to the beach. The AC worked great and the room stay fairly cool during the day even after we had turned off the AC and were gone for hours. We appreciated having a small fridge to keep beverages and snacks for our daily explorations. The bed was a bit too hard for our comfort level, though we've found that to be generally the case for our travels in Mexico. There was a party our first night at the upstairs bar that went until about midnight that kept us up that evening (just unfortunate timing for us since we had traveled overnight and were low on sleep). But once over, everyone dispersed quietly and we were able to fall asleep quickly. Robin, the host, was sweet and welcoming - as were the resident dogs and cats. :) I would definitely recommend Layla's if you're looking for a clean, cool home base for exploring Puerto Morelos.
Thank you for your recommendation !!! We are happy to welcome any friends of yours to our little guesthouse. February is the fullest events period with the rest of the year pretty quiet and calm...... Glad you enjoyed your stay and hope to see you back again one day soon !
