Your hosts, Kent & Nicole, were raised in Utah before taking a respite to build a cabin on a wilderness island in Southeast Alaska. They later moved from the Wrangell area to Ketchikan, where they operated the local radio station for several years. As their next adventure, they explored the southern hemisphere, working abroad for more than a decade in Antarctica and New Zealand.
Nicole is a former newspaper and radio reporter, magazine editor and now is a natural resources attorney. After a long career in radio and television broadcast, Kent now leads technical projects for the National Science Foundation's U.S. Antarctic Program.
When not in the Lower 48 or southern hemisphere, Kent and Nicole can be found soaking up the rainforest at home in Ketchikan.
The Owner purchased this house in 1998
This article, written by Nicole years ago for the Ketchikan Visitors Bureau media kit, helps explain why we keep returning to Ketchikan and consider it 'home:'
'Step onto the dock in Ketchikan and feel it – the rhythm of an island life. Time spent in a place where all roads circle back to center; where the day’s schedule ebbs and flows to the tides, daylight hours, and Alaska Airlines flight schedule. No corporate time clock or freeway traffic here. And any industrial noise is that of an occasional floatplane or the slap of a fishing boat’s lines flying ashore.
Bound to a single, sprawling community that stretches some 35 miles from one end of the developed road system to the other, residents of this Alaska town and associated rural borough appreciate a refined sense of cohesiveness that comes from living together in some isolation. At once gritty, eclectic, and yet strikingly civilized, there is something in Ketchikan’s island life that speaks to most everyone.'
This home provides a convenient headquarters for exploring the best of the Panhandle. Live like a local and experience the real Alaska.
We had a lovely experience staying at Kent and Nicole's. We came just for 3days, and Kent brought us cookies our first night!! Which was amazing because we were starving from all the traveling. They also were very attentive making sure we had everything we needed. The house was comfortable, with great bedding and cozy down comforters on the beds and towels all layed out in the rooms. There were good coffee beans in the cupboard, ready for a morning brew! We enjoyed the 10-15 min drive to town with great views. I will definitely rent from them in the future, thank you Kent and Nicole!!
This was a very spacious and comfortable home. We enjoyed our stay very much. The unit is very clean, beds are very comfortable, quiet scenic location, close enough to town ( you do need a car), kitchen was well stocked and has a dishwasher (not all units have one in Alaska). The owner Kent was very responsive when we had a problem with the door lock and had it fixed very quickly. I was sorry to leave!
This house was perfect for our family and the owners were exceptionally accommodating. Highly recommended.
I can't say enough wonderful things about our experience in Ketchikan and the wonderful hospitality of the homeowners. The house was wonderful and exactly as described. The kitchen is well stocked and the beds are SUPER comfy! The homeowners are very friendly and whenever we had any questions they were only a phone call away and were very fast to respond. We spent time fishing, sight-seeing and shopping. We went on an air tour of the Misty Fjords and took about 1000 pictures...it is so amazingly beautiful. The weather cooperated with us and we only had a little bit of rain. Every day that we were there felt like such a blessing. We are already planning our next trip...and we will definitely want to stay in this home!
This is a lovely 3-bedroom home: clean, quiet, comfortable, beautifully furnished with just the essentials (not overstuffed/overdecorated), and a terrific deal. It is perhaps best suited for three couples since there are three equally nice bedrooms; a kid or two could bed down in the living room. The bedroom windows have peaceful views of the woods. The south-of-town location is fine if you have rented a car, and you will want to rent one (the taxi fares really add up so we switched to a rental car early on). The owners Kent and Nicole are friendly, helpful and tell great stories if you take the opportunity to visit with them. We would happily stay there again if we go back to Ketchikan, and knowing about this place makes it likely that we will.
