About John and Caroline

I live and work here with my partner sculptor Caroline who is originally from Austria and speaks English, German, French and Italian. We are both international recognized sculptors (please Google our names: John Van Alstine, Caroline Ramersdorfer). We would be delighted to share our garden, studios and large indoor gallery and all that the wonderful Adirondacks have to offer with our guests.

John and Caroline purchased this apartment in 1987

Why John and Caroline chose Wells

This historic property, with its 6 independent buildings, nestled on the banks of a mountain river is an artist's dream. To live, create and exhibit our work in such a beautiful part of the world is an extraordinary and wonderful privilege and something we would love to share it with our guests!

What makes this apartment unique

Beyond all the wonderful things the Adirondacks offer - our unique space affords our guests a chance to live within our 9 acre sculpture garden, and if they wish, stroll in our huge indoor galleries, visit our studios, see us at work and come away with memorable insights into how our enchanted location has a strong and positive effect on our creative process.

John and Caroline and Studio C are as good as it gets!

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our recent stay at Studio C, with John and Caroline. They are outstanding hosts -- there whenever we needed them, but also giving us our privacy. They are world class artists who explained what they do -- which is fantastic. Consistent with the owners, Studio C itself is fantastic. It is exquisitely appointed. I slept well there, as did my wife. Finally, the grounds are sublime. Imagine an art gallery on 6 acres. Last night, we had wine before dinner on the island and a fire after dinner. I would recommend John, Caroline, and Studio C to anyone looking to be refreshed and uplifted.

Owner's Response: Gary, it was a pleasure to have you, thank you for the spectacular review. Would love for you to consider coming back, the cross country ski area I mentioned his Lapland Lake in Benson New York. I will try to attach their web link, although home away often blocks this type of communication. You may just have to Google.

Peaceful and Amazing...

  • 4 of 5

A great place for R'n'R... a bit of a drive to northern sights, but we love to drive, so not a problem! Comfortable, spacious studio, well-maintained. Owners very friendly and accommodating... no complaints! Property views and sculpture park are amazing. We really enjoyed the local bike ride around the lake, and the fairly easy hikes to local falls... way cool!

John and Caroline have prepared a fantastic living space for HomeAway guests. Artistic flair, clean, beautiful, great location, private, riverside sculpture garden. What was not to like? John and Caroline even provide snowshoes for use in the plentiful snow! Very thoughtful hosts.

One Week Is Not Enough

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time! Studio C is amazing and we have already recommended it to friends. It was comfortable and cozy, yet extremely spacious, and decorated with John's and Caroline's exquisite artwork and unique touches. The sculptures and workshop/studios are very impressive and compliment an already beautiful property. I thoroughly enjoyed being on the river. It was peaceful and meditative and made for a refreshing swim each morning. Then having coffee outside on the patio, or at the riverside niche, was a perfect start to the day. We took a scenic bike ride around the lake one morning. The bikes were high quality and made it a pleasure negotiating the Adirondack hills. Because we had family members in Wells we spent much of our time participating in the many other adventurous ADK activities, therefore we did not get to know John and Caroline as well as we would have liked. But they were very gracious, accommodating hosts and we greatly appreciated that they share this wonderful place. What a fantastic week! Was it really a week? Looking forward to next year.
