About Beverly Moodie

I was born in Hawaii and have a large extended family here. However, I was raised in California, but returned to Hawaii when Bob and I retired.

Beverly Moodie purchased this house in 2009

Why Beverly Moodie chose Hilo

Lopaka's Family Lodge was originally built to accomodate family and friends. It was named in memory of my late husband, Bob (Lopaka is the Hawaiian name for Robert).

It is such a lovely setting though that it seemed sad to leave it unoccupied when friends and family weren't visiting. That's when I got the idea to offer it as a vacation rental so it can be enjoyed by others.

What makes this house unique

This has been a joyful experience for me. I've met so many wonderful people from all over the world and my life has been enriched by getting to know them. Some have returned several times and I count them amongst those I call "friends & family".

A lovely home away from home

  • 5 of 5

We were fortunate to stay at Lopaka's Family Lodge during our summer vacation on the Big Island, and what a charming place it is. Bev is an amazing hostess who greeted us with a smile and hug when we arrived, gave us a complete tour of our rental, and suggested many places for us to see and explore around the Hilo area. Everything you could need was available: shampoo, soap, paper towels, coolers and ice packs, sunscreen and even a toothbrush (and much more!). The view from the lanai was lovely (amazing to see the glow from Fissure 8 lighting up the sky). And Bev even allowed us to use her personal washing machine because the machine in the rental was broken.

As my review title states, it was truly our home away from home. It was comforting knowing we were returning from our daily adventures to a cozy spot where we would be able to rest and relax. We will definitely stay at Lopaka's on our next trip to the Big Island. Mahalo lui noa, Bev!

Owner's Response: Mahalo for your thoughtful review. You were such troopers to accept the inconvenience of the washer giving out. Please know that I appreciated having your family as guests and I will look forward to welcoming you back soon. Tell your friends to come also. With Aloha, Bev

Another wonderful stay at Bev's (4th and counting!)

  • 5 of 5

This was our fourth stay at Bev's. We couldn't ask for a place that feels more like our own home. The lodge is private and very well equipped. Having a washer/dryer in the unit is a godsend when spending more than a week at a location. Bev is very friendly and helpful, but not intrusive. She's there if you need her. The lodge is separate from Bev's with a private entrance and lanai. The view from the lanai is beautiful in the morning as you sip coffee and watch the ocean. The airport is also in view. Parking is easy on the street with a set-in that keeps the vehicle away from passing vehicles. The residential neighborhood is very quiet and people quite friendly. The lodge is fully equipped with thoughtful additions of beach towels, coolers, and an assortment of toiletries and washer/dryer necessities. The lodge is always immaculate. We highly recommend Bev's for a more intimate Hilo experience and for those balking at the high cost and highly impersonal nature of resorts and hotels. We will be back at Bev's for a fifth stay when next we visit Hilo.

Lovely vacation apartment!

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed staying at Lopaka's Family Lodge. The apartment was very clean, well stocked, had a nice view, and was very convenient to other locations in and around Hilo. It was great to have the washer & dryer as well. Also, the property owner, Bev, was very friendly and helpful with anything we needed. Although it rained a lot due to the volcanic activity in the area, we managed to get in some sightseeing or beach time nearly every day. We spent a lot of time on Coconut Island. We met many friendly locals who were happy to have tourists who were brave enough to visit Hawaii while the volcano was very active. This is a lovely place to stay if you plan to visit Hilo.

Owner's Response: Aloha Ted & Judy, It was a pleasure having you as guests. I was especially happy that you took a chance and came in spite of the Volcano news and that you enjoyed your time here. Im sure you learned that in Hilo and most parts of the island, without the news, we wouldn't know there was an eruption. You were awesome guests and I would love to have you back soon. Bev

Love Lopaka's Lodge

  • 5 of 5

Bev has provided a home-away-from-home experience. Her bungalow has everything needed to enjoy a happy stay, from view (Hilo Bay!) to comfort (sheets so soft!) and amenities (sharp kitchen knives!!) that are a big "cut-above" the usual place for rent. She has considered all possible circumstances and provided nicely; there truly was nothing left wanting! And, did we mention how very clean everything was, a definite plus! Loved our stay, thank you very much, we'll try and get back soon. J & T
